Extra Story: If We Had Known Each Other in High School (Part One)

When Lin An Lan was woken up by his father, it was already 6:40. He glanced at the alarm clock, quickly changed his clothes, washed up, grabbed the steamed buns and milk that Father Lin had heated for him, and rushed out the door.

Seeing him in such a hurry, Father Lin advised, “Slow down, slow down. Being late once in a while isn’t a big deal.”

Lin An Lan looked back at him in surprise, thinking to himself that teachers really were different. Other parents would say “hurry up, hurry up, don’t be late”, but his dad could actually say that being late once in a while wasn’t a big deal. He really lived up to his reputation as a former excellent teacher.

But he didn’t dare listen to his father’s advice. He slung his backpack over his shoulder, left the house, and jogged all the way to the bus station before getting on the bus.

At this hour, the bus was full of students and white-collar workers heading to work.

Being tall, Lin An Lan made his way to the back of the bus compartment and found a handrail to hold onto. Once he had steadied himself, he finally had the mental space to recall the dream he had experienced the night before.

He couldn’t quite understand why he would have such a dream.

Starting from this week, he had been having strange, vague dreams intermittently.

The dreams felt both real and illusory – real enough that he could still remember their content after waking up, yet illusory enough that at first, he could only vaguely sense that one person in the dreams was himself while being unable to see who the other person was clearly.

Until last night, when he finally saw clearly and was thoroughly startled. It was Cheng Yu, his classmate Cheng Yu.

However, they were merely classmates. They hadn’t even spoken to each other very many times, so there was no reason he should be dreaming about him.

Lin An Lan silently frowned, unable to figure it out.

He had never been particularly warm toward people other than his adoptive parents. Aside from Jiang Xu, his close friend since childhood, he didn’t maintain close relationships with others in his class either.

If he had dreamed about his adoptive parents or Jiang Xu, that would have been normal. But it was actually Cheng Yu.

Lin An Lan found it incredibly strange. What was even more incredible was that he and Cheng Yu had an extremely intimate relationship in the dream, hugging and kissing from time to time. If Father Lin hadn’t woken him up this morning, he felt that his dream might have turned into something more explicit.

So did he actually harbor such unspeakable, hidden feelings for Cheng Yu?

Lin An Lan thought this was impossible. After all, he normally didn’t even talk to Cheng Yu at school, so how could they be so affectionate in his dreams?

He sighed, feeling even more confused.

However, Cheng Yu in the dream seemed to look somewhat more mature than he did now. So could this be something that would happen in the future?

Lin An Lan couldn’t tell for sure. He just felt it was strange.

The bus reached his stop. Lin An Lan checked the time and ran toward the school along with the other students who had just gotten off.

When he reached the school entrance, Lin An Lan wasn’t paying attention and happened to collide directly with Cheng Yu, who was also rushing to get to class just in time. Cheng Yu was holding a Chinese crepe that he had just bought, which now fell to the ground.

Lin An Lan froze for a moment, then apologized to him. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. Let me buy you another one.”

“It’s fine.” Cheng Yu didn’t mind either and picked up the fallen Chinese crepe from the ground.

The Chinese crepe was wrapped quite securely – there was a paper bag inside and a plastic bag outside, specially tied with a knot. So only the plastic bag had gotten dirty while the Chinese crepe inside was completely unaffected.

Cheng Yu held it with one finger hooked through the bag and smiled. “It’s not dirty at all. I’ll just throw away the plastic bag. Don’t worry about it.”

Only then did Lin An Lan nod, although he still felt somewhat apologetic.

The morning reading bell rang at just the right moment. Lin An Lan couldn’t afford to exchange more pleasantries with him, so he said hurriedly, “I’ll head to my seat first then.”

“Mm.” Cheng Yu smiled and walked in together with him.

Just as the two of them sat down, the Chinese teacher entered the classroom and had everyone begin reading aloud the texts they needed to memorize this semester.

Lin An Lan read along with everyone else, occasionally glancing at the empty seat beside him. Jiang Xu hadn’t come to class again today.

Ever since Jiang Liying had left with her new boyfriend, Jiang Xu had begun to spiral downward, seemingly wanting to use this method to make Jiang Liying return to his side.

Lin An Lan thought it was pointless. Not all mothers in the world loved their children. Once she decided to abandon you, no matter how much pain you felt, she would never come back.

He understood this kind of situation all too well. He had tried to advise Jiang Xu before, but Jiang Xu remained the same way.

Sometimes, even when he was persuaded at the moment and agreed with him, he would later become unwilling to give up and indulge himself again.

It seemed as if just by trying a little more and waiting a little longer, he could succeed.

But how could that be possible?

Lin An Lan thought Jiang Xu was being naive at times like this. With that thought, he stopped thinking about him and continued reading the text aloud.

Cheng Yu ate his Chinese crepe while watching him.

His boldness was really remarkable.

While everyone else was studying properly, he alone was enjoying his food. The Chinese teacher glared at him disapprovingly, but Cheng Yu acted as if he hadn’t noticed.

Chinese crepe was something that had to be eaten while hot, because once it cooled down, it wouldn’t taste good anymore.

After finishing his food, he rested his head on his desk contentedly and continued watching Lin An Lan, thinking about how Lin An Lan had bumped into his arms just before morning reading.

He suddenly shouted “Ah!” in realization. He had been careless!

He should have let Lin An Lan compensate him for another one just then, asking for money or a red envelope transfer. That way, he would have gotten Lin An Lan’s WeChat contact.

What a mistake, really a mistake.

Cheng Yu sighed regretfully. He had missed this opportunity to add Lin An Lan on WeChat. He felt absolutely dejected. He wondered if he bumped into Lin An Lan again later, whether he could make up for it.

He scratched his head and decided that once morning reading was over, he should find an opportunity to ask him about homework problems.

After all, compared to bumping into him, asking about assignments was more appropriate.
