Chapter 203.2

Editor: Jodi

Lin An Lan sat quietly on the stairs until Cheng Feng came out and saw him. And surprised, Cheng Feng said, “An An, what are you doing sitting here?”

Lin An Lan turned his head to look at him, thinking to himself, why had he come out instead of staying with Mom?

But he couldn’t say this.

“I wanted to get some fruit.” He told him, “but I feel a little lazy, and the stairs are so long, so I was thinking about whether I should go or not.”

Cheng Feng chuckled, thinking how much of a kid he still was.

“What do you want to eat? Dad will get it for you.”

“An apple, and a pear.” Lin An Lan said softly.

“Alright, go back and wait. Dad will wash and slice them for you and bring them up in a bit.”

Lin An Lan was about to nod but suddenly thought of something and said quickly, “I’ll go with Dad.”

Then reaching out, he grabbed Cheng Feng’s hand. Cheng Feng held onto him but then, finding it troublesome, simply picked him up and carried him downstairs.

Lin An Lan wrapped his arms around Cheng Feng’s shoulders and asked innocently, “Dad, has Mom been unhappy these past few days?”

“Why are you asking that?” Cheng Feng looked at him.

Lin An Lan’s expression was innocent. “Mom hasn’t been taking me and big brother to school lately, and when we come home, she doesn’t help us with our homework either. She said she’s not feeling well, so I thought maybe Mom is unhappy.”

“Your mom’s health hasn’t been great. She’s been feeling unwell lately, so you and your big brother need to be good and not upset her.”

“Mm-hmm.” Lin An Lan nodded and added, “Then Dad also has to be good and not make her angry.”

Cheng Feng sighed helplessly. “I don’t want to either.”

He had guessed that Yu Hanshuang would be furious if she found out, so he had been hiding it carefully. But no wall was completely airtight in this world, so it was bound to be exposed eventually.

And the moment it was uncovered, it was like pulling up a radish—it brought up everything, roots and all. He didn’t want to argue; he did enjoy the company of different beauties and indulged in pleasure. Which was why, when someone showed interest in him, he often went along with it. In families like theirs, who didn’t have a few lovers on the side?

As long as it didn’t cause trouble at home, it was fine.

He knew very well that what he was doing was wrong, unfair, and he knew that his wife would never accept it, but he was used to living this way, so even knowing it was wrong, he didn’t want to suppress his desires.

He was also very clear that it was just a game to him. He didn’t love those women, wouldn’t let them into the Cheng family, and certainly wouldn’t let them bear his children. They were just pretty decorations, nothing significant, so he didn’t see it as a big problem.

But Yu Hanshuang obviously thought this was a huge problem.

He sighed again, feeling that his wife probably wouldn’t forgive him anytime soon.

Hearing him sigh, Lin An Lan asked, “So, Dad, did you make Mom angry? You said you don’t want to.”

Cheng Feng looked up at him, and seeing his puzzled expression, flicked his forehead lightly. “Kids shouldn’t meddle so much.”

Covering his forehead, Lin An Lan said softly, “I just don’t want Mom to be unhappy.”

“Why don’t you take some fruit to your mom? She should eat some.”

“Dad, aren’t you going to bring it to her?”

“If I bring it, your mom might not eat it.”

He carried Lin An Lan into the kitchen, grabbed an apple and a pear, washed them, and started cutting them into pieces.

However just when he was about to cut the pear, Lin An Lan said hurriedly, “You can’t cut it! The TV said pears shouldn’t be split, or it’ll mean separation.”

“Nonsense.” Cheng Feng said as he moved to cut it anyway.

Lin An Lan hugged his leg hurriedly. “No, Dad, don’t cut it! Kids who get separated from their parents are so pitiful. Big brother can’t be like this. Big brother can’t be separated from Mom and Dad.”

Cheng Feng’s hand which was holding the knife paused. He lowered his head to look at Lin An Lan’s pleading face. Then after a long moment, he put the knife down slowly.

“Big brother won’t be separated from Mom and Dad.” He said gently. “I won’t cut it, okay?”

Lin An Lan nodded but didn’t forget to emphasize again, “Kids without moms and dads are really pitiful. I didn’t have a dad before, so other kids made fun of me, saying, ‘Your dad doesn’t want you now, and later your mom won’t want you either.’ I didn’t believe them. I said, ‘Mom won’t leave me,’ but later, Mom still left me.”

As Lin An Lan said this, his eyes turned red slowly. “All the kids in the orphanage don’t have moms or dads. There are so, so many, and they can only wait for new moms and dads to come for them. But not every kid gets chosen. The ones who aren’t picked have to sleep alone, eat alone, and go to school alone. If they fall, there’s no mom to pick them up, and when they cry, only the teachers would come. Big brother can’t be like this. Big brother’s too old now, so it will be hard to find new parents at his age. So, he can’t be separated from Mom and Dad.”

As he spoke, tears slid down his cheeks.

At first, Cheng Feng felt a little heartbroken listening to him, but by the time he got to the last part, he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Crouching, he wiped the kid’s tears. “Silly kid, why are you crying? Your big brother is still so young. What’s this about being too old?”

“Don’t worry.” He comforted him. “Mom and Dad won’t be separated from your big brother, and we won’t abandon him. He’s our only child. We love him too much to let him go.”

After saying this, he realized that calling him their ‘only’ child might not sound so nice to the sniffing Lin An Lan. So, he added quickly, “Of course, we won’t abandon you either. You’re also Mom and Dad’s child. You and your big brother are both our children, so neither of you will be separated from us. Got it?”

Lin An Lan nodded, hoping he really understood.

On TV, all those dads with women on the side ended up leaving their wives and kids. So, he couldn’t let that happen.

“Dad, don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not lying to you.” Cheng Feng wiped his tears and pulled him into a hug.

It had, after all been three years. Although he hadn’t felt much for Lin An Lan when they first adopted him, Lin An Lan had, over time, spent every day with Cheng Yu and ate at the same table with him every day.

He was obedient and sensible, sweet and good-looking, and hearing him call him ‘Dad’ so sweetly every day, he gradually developed feelings for him.

Of course, it didn’t compare to how he felt about Cheng Yu, but he had come to see Lin An Lan as his own child.

Sighing, Cheng Feng patted his back, feeling a little sorry for his past.

But luckily, he was now part of their family, and so wouldn’t suffer anymore.

Thinking about how Lin An Lan had just spoken up for Cheng Yu, he felt a bit warm inside. He hadn’t opposed Cheng Yu wanting a little brother or adopting an orphan to be that brother. But if the child didn’t know his place, then he would make sure he understood his status.

But as things were now, it was much better than he had expected.

Brotherly love and mutual care—it was nice. At least it was better than the relationship he had with his own two brothers.
