Lin An Lan heard the sound of the door opening and stepped out of his room, just in time to see Cheng Feng’s departing figure.
Cheng Yu stood beside him, fuming. “Why is he leaving again?”
Lin An Lan didn’t know either. He had thought that once he knew about Mommy’s condition, they would finally make up.
But why was he leaving again?
He turned to look at Cheng Yu. Sigh, big brother was still the best. Mommy and Daddy’s thoughts were impossible to figure out.
“Let’s go back. We need to shower and sleep.”
“Okay.” Cheng Yu grabbed his hand, and the two of them went back inside.
**
Time flew by, and soon it was time for their elementary school graduation.
On the day of the official ceremony, Yu Hanshuang and Cheng Feng both went to their school to take photos with them.
The two of them, dressed in their school uniforms, posed for pictures with their classmates, on the playground, and in front of the school building.
Yu Hanshuang took a few pictures with them too. Cheng Feng wanted to join, and although Cheng Yu was a little reluctant, he still took a picture with him.
“Xiao Shuang, come here too. Let’s take a family picture, the four of us together.” Cheng Feng suggested.
Yu Hanshuang handed the camera to a passing teacher and asked her to take the picture.
Cheng Feng reached out and put his arm around her, and while Yu Hanshuang didn’t resist, the moment the picture was taken, she quickly shifted away from his touch.
Cheng Feng felt helpless, watching as she bent down to ask Cheng Yu and Lin An Lan what they wanted to eat. He had no choice but to crouch down as well and listen to their conversation.
Since it was a rare occasion, both Lin An Lan and Cheng Yu were in high spirits. Yu Hanshuang wanted to reward them and take them on a trip, so the three of them excitedly discussed where to go over dinner.
“I want to go mountain climbing!” Cheng Yu said firmly. “I want to climb the highest peak and watch the sunrise from the top.”
“I want to watch the sunrise over the ocean.” Lin An Lan said. “It looks beautiful over the water.”
“We can do both!” Cheng Yu said in response. “After all, it’s summer vacation, right, Mom? We have plenty of time.”
Yu Hanshuang nodded. “That’s right.”
“Then I’ll go with you guys too.” Cheng Feng said.
“There’s no need.” Yu Hanshuang picked apart a crab carefully and placed the meat on Cheng Yu’s plate. “I’ll take the kids myself. You can focus on your own things.”
“I don’t have much to do lately, so I might as well join you.”
“My big brother is coming with us, and Xiao Heng will be there too. They’ll take care of An An and Xiao Yu, so you don’t have to worry.”
“Wouldn’t I feel even more at ease if I went myself?”
“Then go ahead.” Yu Hanshuang peeled another crab patiently. “It just so happens that my sister has something to deal with, so I won’t be going. You can take them instead.”
Cheng Feng: …
Cheng Yu pushed the crab meat on his plate toward Lin An Lan silently. He glanced up at the two adults from time to time but kept his mouth shut.
This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened. Ever since third grade, after his parents had that big fight and started sleeping in separate rooms, he had noticed a pattern.
At first, it wasn’t frequent, but over the past couple of years, it had been happening more and more.
Basically, his dad would go out of his way to be nice, while his mom would just ignore him.
He had even complained to Lin An Lan privately before, “Daddy must’ve done something really awful to Mommy. That’s why she’s like this.”
However Lin An Lan, who had long since figured out what Cheng Feng had done, didn’t dare to say much. He could only nod along.
At times like this, he felt really bad for Yu Hanshuang. Her husband had cheated on her, but for the sake of giving Cheng Yu a peaceful home, she had stayed in the Cheng family.
At the same time, he felt bad for Cheng Yu too, because he had no idea.
Not knowing was the happiest thing. But at the same time, the moment you did find out, it would be the most painful thing in the world.
Ever since Lin An Lan had joined the Cheng family, he had been closest to Cheng Yu, followed by Yu Hanshuang. He knew Cheng Feng wasn’t his real dad, and since he had been too young when he found out about the cheating, it didn’t hurt as much.
But he worried about Cheng Yu. After all, Cheng Feng was his real father. And no one could remain indifferent after finding out that their own dad had cheated.
Thinking about this, he couldn’t help but dislike Cheng Feng even more. He became even more determined to keep this secret from Cheng Yu.
But while Lin An Lan disliked Cheng Feng, Cheng Feng actually really liked him. Not only did he not dislike him, he actually preferred him.
Cheng Feng had no idea Lin An Lan resented him for cheating. In his mind, Lin An Lan had always been the most well-behaved, obedient, and thoughtful child, even more likable than his own biological son.
Even when he was little, he had been perceptive and considerate, constantly reminding him to be good to Cheng Yu and to Yu Hanshuang. And when Yu Hanshuang had walked away, he had been the one to persuade her to come back.
Honestly, this kid had always been a worrywart and a kind-hearted little peacemaker.
Which was exactly why he now sought him out for help.
“An An, don’t you want Mommy and Daddy to go on the trip together?” That night, after dinner, Cheng Feng called Lin An Lan into his study and asked him gently.
Lin An Lan: …
If I say no, will you believe me?
