Chapter 206.1
Editor: Princess
In the end, Yu Hanshuang still moved out. She didn’t go back home but returned to the apartment she had lived in before she got married.
Cheng Yu held onto her, wanting to leave with her. But Yu Hanshuang vaguely felt that she wasn’t in the right headspace right now, and staying with Cheng Yu might not be the best choice—for herself or for him—so she refused.
“Mommy’s just going back to rest for a while. Mommy is sick and can’t see anyone except the doctor, so I need to be alone for now. But once I’m better, I’ll come back to see you, okay?”
Cheng Yu wanted to cry, but he remembered she had told him that boys shouldn’t cry. So he could only ask in a choked-up voice, “When?”
“Very soon.” Yu Hanshuang patted his head, kissed him, and said, “Don’t be scared. Mommy will come back to see you in a couple of days, very soon.”
Lin An Lan grabbed Cheng Yu’s hand, staring at Yu Hanshuang with wide eyes, as he asked, “Mommy, will you still pick us up from school?”
Yu Hanshuang looked at the two kids, four hopeful eyes staring at her. And after a long pause, nodded. “I will.”
She hugged both kids, then left the house.
It was only after she left that Cheng Yu finally let his tears fall, silently crying as he stared in the direction she had gone.
Lin An Lan stood on tiptoe to wipe his tears, gently blowing on his eyes to comfort him. “Big brother, don’t cry. It’s okay.”
“Why does Mommy have to leave home?” Cheng Yu didn’t understand. “Why doesn’t she want me anymore?”
Lin An Lan had a vague idea that it had something to do with Cheng Feng, but he couldn’t tell Cheng Yu this. So he just wiped his tears and said gently, “It’s not that she doesn’t want you. Mommy didn’t leave you. She’s just sick and needs some time alone. Big brother, don’t be sad.”
But how could Cheng Yu not be sad? He had never experienced anything like this before. His whole mind felt foggy—he didn’t understand why this was happening, and he didn’t know what to do.
He reached out and hugged Lin An Lan, holding him tightly, his heart full of sorrow.
Lin An Lan could only hold him back, patting his shoulder to comfort him.
He was actually feeling bad too. Yu Hanshuang suddenly moving out made him upset as well. But Cheng Yu looked too heartbroken, so he didn’t even have the energy to dwell on his own feelings. He understood a little more than Cheng Yu did, which made him a little clearer-headed. He was afraid that if Cheng Yu learned the truth, he would be even more hurt.
Holding him, Lin An Lan couldn’t help but think, why did Dad have to do this?
He already had Mommy and Cheng Yu, so why did he have to go after other women?
Didn’t he care that Cheng Yu would be hurt?
He was a little angry at Cheng Feng. So that night, he didn’t go to sleep and stayed up, waiting for Cheng Feng to come home.
When he heard movement, he whispered to Cheng Yu, “I’m going to get something to eat.”
Then he ran out of Cheng Yu’s room.
Cheng Feng had drunk a little but wasn’t drunk. So when he saw Lin An Lan running over to him, tilting his little face up to look at him, he still had the patience to ask, “An An, what is it? Do you have something to say to Daddy?”
“Mommy left.” Lin An Lan said softly.
Cheng Feng felt annoyed as soon as he heard this. He hadn’t expected Yu Hanshuang to leave, what’s more he didn’t think things needed to escalate to this point. What was this, a separation?
Was divorce next?
Could the two of them even get a divorce?
Since they couldn’t get divorced anyway, what was the point of making a fuss?
“I know.” He said calmly.
“Dad, did you and Mom have a fight?” Lin An Lan asked. “Can you bring Mom back? Big brother doesn’t want her to leave. He cried today.”
Cheng Feng carried him to the sofa and sat down. “If your mom wants to leave, how could I stop her?”
“You can.” Lin An Lan said in a small voice. “You and Mom are husband and wife. The books say that husbands and wives are the closest people to each other. Dad, you definitely can.”
“I can’t.” Cheng Feng patted his head. “Alright, An An, this isn’t something you should worry about. Don’t think about it anymore. Go do your homework. I’ll give you two a bath later.”
Lin An Lan shook his head. “Dad, just go, okay? Even if it’s just for big brother’s sake. He doesn’t want Mom to leave. You promised me that big brother would always have both his parents.”
“Your mom is just staying somewhere else for a while. It’s not that she doesn’t want you and your big brother, so don’t worry.” Cheng Feng patted his back. “When the time comes, she’ll come back.”
Lin An Lan didn’t understand. “But big brother cried today. If Mom doesn’t come back tomorrow, he’ll still be sad tomorrow too.”
Cheng Feng was silent for a moment before speaking harshly. “The world won’t always go the way he wants. Growing up means facing pain and disappointment. Parents are their own people too. He can’t expect them to always put him first.”
Lin An Lan looked at him in shock. Cheng Feng’s expression was calm, completely unbothered. He said, “I’ll go talk to him later and explain about his mom. You don’t need to worry about it.”
He reached out and ruffled Lin An Lan’s hair, but this time, Lin An Lan didn’t smile at him like he used to.
He just looked at him, and in that moment, he finally realized. Out of everyone in this house, the person who hated seeing Cheng Yu sad the most, the one who wanted him to always be happy, wasn’t Cheng Feng or Yu Hanshuang. It was him.
Mom could have taken Cheng Yu with her, but she didn’t.
Dad could have convinced Mom to come back and make Cheng Yu happy, but he didn’t either.
Only him. He was the only one who wanted Cheng Yu to stay in the dark, to always be happy.
For the first time, he felt disappointed in Cheng Feng. He said, “But big brother’s whole world is just Mom and Dad. Dad, you can go out, you can have dinner and drinks with other people, but big brother has to come home. He has to worry about you and Mom fighting. You and Mom both have good friends, you can spend all day with them, but big brother can’t. He only has family. He just wants his mom and dad to be home. Is even that impossible?”
Cheng Feng was stunned for a moment. He hadn’t expected Lin An Lan to say that. He had always been obedient and well-behaved, never talked back, and never said things people didn’t like to hear.
He was quiet, sensible, the easiest child to take care of. But now, he was fighting, desperately trying to protect Cheng Yu’s happiness.
“You care about your big brother a lot, huh?” Cheng Feng asked.
Lin An Lan nodded. “Big brother treats me really well, and I like him too.”
“Then when you grow up, you have to stay close with him just like now, okay?”
Lin An Lan nodded again.
“I’ll go see your mom and tell her that you and your big brother really miss her. I’ll tell her you both want her to come back. Is that okay?”
“Dad, you have to convince Mom to come back.”
“Alright, Dad will do his best.”
“En.”
Only then did Lin An Lan feel relieved. He took an orange, had Cheng Feng cut it up, then carried it back to his room.
Cheng Feng watched his small figure disappear, thinking to himself that he was surprisingly thoughtful.
Their family was lucky, lucky to adopt a kid and get one this sensible.
