Chapter 204.2
Editor: Jodi
Lin An Lan didn’t hear any of this commotion. At the moment, he was in Cheng Yu’s room, watching him do his homework.
He had been gone for a while, and as soon as he returned, Cheng Yu asked, “So, did you find out?”
Lin An Lan didn’t want to tell him the truth, so he was still thinking about how to make something up. For now, he decided to stall.
“Have you finished your homework?”
“Almost.” Cheng Yu replied.
“Then finish it first. We’ll talk after you’re done.”
Cheng Yu had always been easygoing with him, what’s more since he was almost done, he lowered his head and went back to writing.
Lin An Lan sat there watching him while thinking hard about how to spin this story.
Before long, Cheng Yu finished his homework and said excitedly, “Now you can tell me, right?”
Blinking, Lin An Lan repeated what Yu Hanshuang had told him. “Mom said she’s been feeling low on energy lately. She also said she’d bring us some snacks later.”
“Why’s she feeling low on energy?”
“Mom didn’t say.”
“Then we’ll ask her when she comes with the snacks.”
“Okay.” Lin An Lan nodded.
“Why were you gone so long?” Cheng Yu asked, puzzled. “It’s been a while. If you hadn’t come back soon, I was going to look for you.”
“I ran into Dad.” Lin An Lan said. “I wanted some fruit, so Dad helped me slice it and asked me to bring it to Mom. Then I came back.”
“So where’s your fruit?” Cheng Yu asked him.
“I gave it to Mom.”
Cheng Yu pinched his cheek helplessly. “Silly, weren’t you the one who wanted to eat fruit? Where’s yours?”
Lin An Lan blinked, and only then did it dawn on him. “I forgot. But I did eat a piece of apple at Mom’s.”
“See, that’s why you’re a little dummy.” Cheng Yu sighed. “Look at you, forgetting something so simple. I have to remind you. You’re really such a silly little brother.”
Lin An Lan huffed, “I am not!”
Standing up, Cheng Yu leaned close to his ear. “You totally are.”
After saying this, he headed for the door. Lin An Lan stood up quickly and asked, “Where are you going?”
“To get you some fruit.” Cheng Yu said, glancing back at him and letting out an exaggerated sigh. “What would you even do without me? So clueless, such a little dummy.”
Lin An Lan’s cheeks puffed up. “I’m not clueless!”
He walked over. “I’ll go with you.”
“Alright.” Cheng Yu said, grabbing his hand and giving it a little squeeze.
Lin An Lan squeezed his hand back, not forgetting to emphasize, “I’m not clueless!”
“Okay, okay, you’re not clueless. You’re just silly.”
Lin An Lan: ???
Fuming, he didn’t say a word. He pinched Cheng Yu’s fingers one by one, from his thumb to his pinky. He was furious—he wasn’t silly! What kind of stupid big brother was this? Big dummy!
Cheng Yu enjoyed teasing him in the moment, but when it came time to smooth things over, it wasn’t nearly as fun.
Lin An Lan washed the apple silently, refusing to talk or even look at him.
Cheng Yu handed him the apple. “Still mad?”
Lin An Lan: “Hmph.”
“Don’t be mad. I was just teasing you. You’re not clueless.”
“Then who’s clueless?” Lin An Lan asked.
“I’m clueless, I’m clueless. Big brother is the most clueless.”
Cheng Yu turned off the faucet for him, took the apple from his hands, and handed him the one he had washed and wiped dry. “Eat this one. I cleaned it for you.”
“Don’t say that about me again.” Lin An Lan told him.
“Okay.”
Cheng Yu agreed, and only then did Lin An Lan finally lower his head to eat the apple.
Cheng Yu didn’t want to eat a whole one, so after Lin An Lan took a bite, he bit into the same spot.
They were used to sharing food, so Lin An Lan didn’t mind when Cheng Yu ate his. After finishing his part, Lin An Lan obediently started feeding Cheng Yu, and Cheng Yu just stood there, letting him.
Once they finished, the two washed their hands and headed back upstairs.
Cheng Yu wanted to check on Yu Hanshuang, so Lin An Lan followed along.
**
Yu Hanshuang was about to take her medicine when she heard a knock at the door. She put the medicine back into the cabinet hurriedly.
Not long after, she saw Cheng Yu poke his head through the door.
Yu Hanshuang forced herself to perk up and let her son come in.
Looking at her pale face, Cheng Yu asked, “Mom, are you sick?”
“No.” Yu Hanshuang replied. “I’m just feeling a little low on energy.”
“Why?” Cheng Yu didn’t understand. “Are you too tired?”
Yu Hanshuang nodded, looking at his face that resembled both Cheng Feng and herself. Her tone was full of exhaustion. “Yes, Mom is very tired.”
“Why are you so tired?” Cheng Yu couldn’t figure it out. “Is work too tiring? Then, Mom, you shouldn’t go to work anymore.”
Smiling, Yu Hanshuang patted his head. “It’s not about work.”
“Then what is it?”
“Just some little things.” Yu Hanshuang said softly. “Are you hungry? Mom had someone prepare snacks for you and An An. Do you want some?”
Cheng Yu nodded.
Yu Hanshuang had the maid bring the snacks up, watched them finish eating, and only then sent them off to brush their teeth and go to bed.
After watching Cheng Yu and Lin An Lan fall asleep, she returned to her own room and took her medicine with the now-cold water.
**
From then on, Yu Hanshuang and Cheng Feng entered a cold war—or rather, she unilaterally stopped speaking to him.
She tried her best to keep Cheng Yu from noticing, and Cheng Yu really didn’t pick up on the tension between his parents. He just thought his mom had been very busy lately, and his dad too. At mealtimes, his mom would only take a few bites before heading back to work, or sometimes she’d eat at the office and come home afterward.
Cheng Yu felt distressed for his mom and gave her shoulders a little massage, asking, “How much longer do you have to be this busy? Mom, you’ve been coming home really late lately.”
Yu Hanshuang didn’t reply right away, feeling a bit guilty. She wasn’t actually busy, she just didn’t want to come home and face Cheng Feng, so she kept finding reasons to stay out. “Soon.” She reassured Cheng Yu.
That evening, Cheng Xiao called her and Cheng Feng together for a talk.
“Xiao Yu is still at home. No matter what conflicts you two have as parents, you can’t let the child worry about you. Cheng Feng, you know what you’ve done. This is your fault, so apologize to Xiao Shuang.”
