Chapter 204.1
Editor: Jodi
Cheng Feng finished slicing the apples, washed a pear, placed them onto a fruit platter, then handed it to Lin An Lan to take upstairs.
“Can you carry it?” Cheng Feng looked at his small figure. “How about Dad carries you up instead?”
Lin An Lan thought about it, then nodded quickly. “Dad, you carry me, and I’ll give the fruit to Mom and tell her you sliced it.”
Hearing this, Cheng Feng picked him up. “I can carry you, but you don’t need to tell your mom about the fruit.”
“Why not?”
“Because she’s still mad at me. If you bring her the fruit, she’ll be happy. If I do, she’ll probably just get annoyed.”
Cheng Feng sighed, carrying Lin An Lan upstairs.
He set Lin An Lan down at the door, then patted his shoulder. “Go on.”
Lin An Lan glanced back at him, holding the fruit platter, and knocked on the door. A voice came from inside. It was Yu Hanshuang’s. “Who is it?”
“It’s me.” Lin An Lan said in a crisp, clear voice.
“Come in.” Yu Hanshuang said gently.
Lin An Lan carried the fruit platter inside.
Yu Hanshuang was leaning against the bed, dressed in silk pajamas, her pale neck exposed, and her face even paler than her neck.
Her complexion didn’t look good. There was no color in her cheeks, her lips were pale, and she looked sickly and frail.
Lin An Lan walked to her bedside, looking at her worriedly. “Mom, are you sick?”
Smiling, Yu Hanshuang shook her head. “No, I’ve just been feeling a little low on energy lately. Why are you here?”
Lin An Lan lifted the fruit platter and held it out to her. “Have some fruit.”
Yu Hanshuang looked at the neatly sliced apples with the skin peeled off and asked, “Who helped you cut this?”
“I cut it myself.” Lin An Lan said hurriedly, remembering how Cheng Feng had told him not to mention him.
Laughing, Yu Hanshuang took the tray from his hands and said, “What did I tell you before? Kids shouldn’t use knives. You went behind my back and secretly cut fruit? An An, you’re being naughty.”
Lin An Lan froze, feeling like she’d caught him right at his weak spot.
What he was afraid of the most was being told he wasn’t behaving. He always felt that if he wasn’t good, he’d be sent back to the orphanage. So when he heard those words, his whole little body tensed up, and he clutched the hem of his shirt, looking pitiful.
“I didn’t.” He whispered. “I didn’t touch it. I wasn’t naughty.”
Yu Hanshuang didn’t expect that her casual remark would scare the child so much. She thought to herself, It’s been three years, how come he still feels this insecure?
Reaching out, she picked him up and placed him on the bed. Then holding him close, she fed him a small piece of apple. “It’s okay. Mom doesn’t mean you are naughty. Mom knows you didn’t touch it. You’re the best behaved, aren’t you?”
Lin An Lan nodded firmly. “I’m the best behaved.”
Smiling, Yu Hanshuang stroked his face gently. “So don’t be scared. Mom knows. Mom’s not blaming you.”
“Really?”
Yu Hanshuang nodded. “Now tell Mom, who cut the fruit?”
Lin An Lan: …
He turned his head to look at the door silently.
How could Yu Hanshuang not guess? She let out a cold laugh but then lowered her gaze gently and said to Lin An Lan, “You can go back now. Later, Mom will bring you and your big brother some snacks. Mom’s tired and wants to rest for a bit.”
Lin An Lan nodded. “Then Mom, you rest well.”
“Alright.” She leaned back on the bed.
Lin An Lan walked out and saw Cheng Feng standing not far from the door. He walked over and whispered, “Mom asked who cut the fruit, but I didn’t tell her.”
Cheng Feng nodded slightly and patted his head. “Good boy. Go and play.”
Only then did Lin An Lan go back slowly.
Yu Hanshuang waited until some time had passed before getting out of bed. She picked up the fruit platter from the bedside table and walked out.
Cheng Feng was standing outside the door, hesitating about whether to go in when he heard footsteps. He looked up and saw his wife coming out.
Just as he was about to speak, Yu Hanshuang raised her hand and threw the fruit platter at him. She glared at him, said nothing, turned around, and went back inside, slamming the door shut.
Cheng Feng felt a bit of a headache. However he wasn’t angry. After all, he’d done something to let Yu Hanshuang down. If she was mad enough to hit or scold him, it was only fair.
He just hoped that after her anger subsided, she’d forgive him and they could go back to living a good life together.
He was very clear about one thing, and that was that he did like Yu Hanshuang. She was his wife, and anyone else in his life was just a fleeting indulgence, a novelty to amuse himself with, nothing more.
He was used to being a flirt, so expecting him to change his nature wasn’t realistic. But even so, he was willing to go beyond his nature to give his wife the utmost gentleness and care.
In his mind, no matter how alluring or charming other women were, they could never compare to Yu Hanshuang, let alone be worthy of bearing his children.
He thought that this was what love meant, but it was obvious this wasn’t the kind of love Yu Hanshuang wanted.
He called a maid upstairs to clean up the fruit on the floor, then went to his study to change into a fresh set of clothes.
