Chapter 199.1

Editor: Jodi

Xiao Qiao glanced at Cheng Yu, sensing that he was somehow different from the rest of them.

As she stared at Cheng Yu, the director walked over and asked, “What’s going on?”

“An An said this child wants to join their class. Is that okay?”

The director turned to look at Yu Hanshuang.

Yu Hanshuang nodded slightly.

“Then let them attend the class together.” The director answered.

Hearing this, Cheng Yu’s face lit up with joy. Then he grabbed Lin An Lan’s hand happily and followed him into the classroom.

The orphanage had limited resources, hence the classroom was furnished with long tables and benches.

Lin An Lan led Cheng Yu to the back row. He had only been at the orphanage for a week, and no new children had arrived after him, and so he had been sitting alone all this time as most of the children already had desk mates.

Lin An Lan, who liked to keep things clean, took out his small handkerchief and wiped the desk carefully until it was spotless.

Then after cleaning his side, he helped Cheng Yu wipe down his side as well.

“You can sit here.” He told him, pointing to the spot he had just cleaned. “Sit with me.”

Cheng Yu had been hoping to sit with him anyway, so he immediately sat down without hesitation.

Lin An Lan grinned widely, thinking to himself, so nice, he now had a little desk mate too.

Sitting next to Cheng Yu, he asked, “Have you ever listened to a class before?”

Cheng Yu nodded his head.

“I have too.” Lin An Lan told him. “I’ve attended lots of classes before.”

“I’ve attended lots too.”

“I even got little red flowers as rewards!”

“I did too.”

“I scored a perfect 100 before.”

“So have I.”

Lin An Lan pouted, then thought about it, “I also had a little desk mate!”

“Me too.”

Lin An Lan: ……

He wasn’t happy. He didn’t have one now.

No little desk mate, no little red flowers, no perfect scores, and no mother.

“I don’t have one now.” He said pitifully.

Cheng Yu didn’t understand why he suddenly became unhappy, and so asked him, “What don’t you have?”

Lin An Lan slumped over the desk, his voice muffled. “Everything is gone.”

Cheng Yu didn’t quite get it, but he leaned over the desk too, keeping him company. “What’s wrong? Are you upset?”

Lin An Lan looked at him, then thinking about how Cheng Yu was his first desk mate since he came here, he whispered, “Can you come to our class? That way, I’ll have a little desk mate.”

Having a little desk mate meant having a good friend. Back in kindergarten, his best friend had been his desk mate.

Cheng Yu understood now. “You don’t have a little desk mate now?”

Lin An Lan nodded, saying aggrievedly, “I’m the only one sitting alone in class.”

Cheng Yu glanced around the classroom and saw that it was true. The class wasn’t very big, yet everyone else was paired up. Lin An Lan was the only one without a little desk mate.

“Then come back with me.” He told him. “Be my little brother. I’ll take you to my class and sit at the same table with you.”

Lin An Lan thought Cheng Yu was asking him to join the class he was assigned to in the orphanage, so resting his chin on his hand, his small brows furrowed as he thought about it seriously.

“You can’t?” Cheng Yu asked him.

“But Sister Xiao Qiao is here.” Lin An Lan said in response.

He glanced over at Xiao Qiao. He was a little reluctant to leave her behind.

Sister Xiao Qiao knew everything and stayed with him, just like a big sister. If he left for another class, he wouldn’t be able to be with her anymore.

Cheng Yu followed his gaze and saw the short-haired girl.

“You can’t bear to part with her?”

“Sister Xiao Qiao is very nice.” Lin An Lan whispered.

“I’m very nice too.” Cheng Yu replied without a hint of shame..

Lin An Lan looked at him, then at Xiao Qiao again, and felt that it was such a hard choice.

One was a new friend, and the other was Sister Xiao Qiao—it was so difficult!

“Can’t you come to our class?” He still felt that it would be better if Cheng Yu came over. “That way, we can sit at the same table.”

“I have my own classes to attend.” Cheng Yu said with a troubled look. “I have so many classes, so I probably won’t be able to come here and take classes with you in the future.”

Lin An Lan wilted subconsciously when he heard this.

And Cheng Yu, seeing him droop like a sad little kitten, his head hanging low, thought he looked incredibly cute. Reaching out, he stroked Lin An Lan’s hair, coaxing him gently, “How about you be my little brother?”

“Then whenever I have time, I’ll accompany you to classes and sit at the same table with you.”

Lin An Lan turned to look at him. Cheng Yu was smiling brightly, his fair face looking both adorable and handsome as he stroked his hair while looking at him.

Lin An Lan blinked, then blinked again. “Then will you come play with me often?”

“I’ll play with you every day.” Cheng Yu promised.

And hearing this, Lin An Lan stopped hesitating. “Are you older than me?”

“I’m definitely older than you.” Cheng Yu said confidently.

“How old are you?”

“I’m six.” He had just celebrated his birthday two months ago.

When Lin An Lan heard this, he thought, six was indeed older than him. “Okay then.”

“Then you’ll be my little brother from now on.” Cheng Yu told him.

Lin An Lan nodded.

“Then call me ‘big brother.’”

Lin An Lan was a little shy.

Cheng Yu’s eyes sparkled as he looked at him. “Say it so I’ll hear.”

Lin An Lan buried his face in his arms.

And laughing, Cheng Yu poked his neck, whispering, “You’re shy.”

“I’m not!” Lin An Lan turned to look at him, his face red.

His cheeks puffed up, and Cheng Yu poked them with a smile.

After thinking about it for a moment, Lin An Lan whispered slowly, “Big brother.”

Cheng Yu was so delighted that he almost jumped off the bench. Reaching out, he stroked Lin An Lan’s head again. “Don’t worry, big brother will protect you from now on.”

Lin An Lan had never heard anyone say such words to him before.

From the moment he could remember, there was no father in his life. His mother raised him alone and always told him, “You have to be good, be extra well-behaved.”

So he had always listened, thinking he was indeed very good. But his mother lied to him. She left him here.

She didn’t want him anymore.

She never told him she would protect him.

Maybe she had never even thought about protecting him.
