Chapter 170.1 Butterfly effect (2)
Editor: Jodi
Somewhere in the vastness of space, countless zergs lay quietly dormant, silent and seemingly in deep hibernation, and among them, one stood out. It was a golden zerg of immense size, comparable to a warship, the only object in motion in the void. It was eating, and in front of it lay the corpse of a cyan zerg which it was eating bite by bite.
The golden zerg ate with a certain ‘elegance’, because after a few bites it would pause, and then its eyes would narrow slightly as if it was savoring some worldly delicacy. This continued bite after bite until it consumed the entire cyan zerg over the course of a day. Then after it was done, its eyes brightened by a few points, then it cast its gaze towards the depths of the vast galaxy, as if trying to see something through the stars clearly, but then instantly retracted its gaze towards the numerous dormant zergs around it. Then its clear gaze suddenly became complex, as if it was thinking, filled with endless solitude, before it closed its eyes slowly to begin hibernating like the zergs around it.
This was a short hibernation, one that it had experienced seven times, and this time was the eighth time. However this time it wouldn’t be so long. It only needed a day.
The War God Legion, Maintenance Room Number One.
Yan Hao and Di Ya were standing in a corner watching the two Major Generals test drive their newly repaired mechs. This test drive that had turned into a spar, had originally only been to just try their mechs lightly, but the result was that the more they fought, the more fierce their movements became, forcing Yan Hao and Di Ya to retreat to the corner.
It wasn’t until a clear winner was determined that the two mechs stopped. Then their cockpits opened, and two middle-aged men in Major General uniforms, looking quite different from each other, jumped down. They had been Major Generals before they were discharged and so had returned to the army wearing the same rank’s uniform, albeit without the actual authority.
“A refreshing fight!”
”You this kid, do you have an M 1(I think the M stands for masochistic physique? You’ve already been beaten like this and you still think it’s refreshing?” The other laughed as he scolded.
“Scram. If you have the ability don’t use a level 9 mech.”
“If you have the ability get yourself a level 9 mech.”
The two insulted each other, quarreling as if they were children in the third grade.
“Qi, what’s so great about having a level 9 mech? I’m going to pilot a mimetic mech in the future.” Then saying this, the man turned his head to look at Yan Hao fiercely, “Master Yan Hao, you repaired this mech of mine, so strictly speaking, you can also be considered to be my mech builder. When will you make me a mimetic mech? I’m not picky, just something like Sheng Heng’s will do.”
“Ah?” Yan Hao was stunned, not knowing how to reply for a moment.
“This also works?” The owner of the level 9 mech was shocked. The person who repaired his mech could also be considered his mech builder? He immediately looked at Di Ya with resentment, saying in disgust, “Who asked you to repair it for me?”
“Xin Changwei, believe it or not, I will revert your mech back to its original state right now.” Di Ya was enraged. He was a level 9 mech builder, one who was sought after by many to repair their mechs for them. When had he faced such disdain?
“Cough.” The man called Xin Changwei shifted his gaze awkwardly, pretending he hadn’t said anything just now.
“Master Yan Hao, you’re so young, I’ll call you Little Master.” The other man said, then not waiting for Yan Hao’s approval to start using the nickname, continued, “Little Master Yan Hao, Sheng Heng used to call me uncle when he was small, so by that logic, we’re practically family. About that mimetic mech…”
“Then if we’re saying this, then Sheng Heng used to call me uncle as well, so I also want a mimetic mech.” Xin Changwei added.
“These two uncles, if we were to really calculate, then there are about eight hundred, if not a thousand people in the War God Legion that I used to call uncle when I was a child. Are you guys trying to work my boyfriend to death?” The main door had been pushed opened at an unknown time and Sheng Heng, standing in the doorway, looked at the two men who were arguing inside with a smile on his face.
And seeing him, Yan Hao’s heart eased, then he walked over in a few steps to stand beside him, and it was only then he finally felt a bit more secure. He had really been scared just now. He really didn’t know how to deal with these two uncles who had suddenly become familiar all on their own.
And taking his hand, Sheng Heng gave it a reassuring squeeze, then gave him a comforting look.
“You this bad kid, forgetting your uncle after getting a wife. I am the one who sneaked you onto the battlefield when you were small, and for that, I was confined by your dad for seven days.”
It seems Senior didn’t visit the base after he was five. Taking a five-year-old to the battlefield, this uncle deserved to be confined.
“Of course I remember Uncle Yang’s care for me, but in front of my wife, even my dad has to take a step back, let alone two uncles.” Sheng Heng told them.
“You this rascal, at least you know how to speak.” The man Sheng Heng called Uncle Yang scolded as he laughed.
Xin Changwei also burst into laughter. The proposal they had made to Yan Hao about him building them a mimetic mech just now was partly serious but mostly in jest. The serious part was their genuine desire for a mimetic mech, however they also knew very well in their hearts that even if Yan Hao made another mimetic mech, it wouldn’t be their turn to pilot it.
“Alright, you two have had your fun. Have you finished testing the mechs? If there’s nothing else to adjust, then take your mechs and hurry up and get out.” Di Ya wasn’t in a very wonderful mood after Xin Changwei’s disdain from just now.
However at the mention of their mechs, the two became serious immediately.
“There’s about a 0.1 second delay when the mech’s right arm is raised.” Xin Changwei told him.
“I’ll take a look.” Di Ya walked towards the level 9 mech with his toolbox.
“The energy supply of my mech seems a bit slow.” Uncle Yang told Yan Hao, sharing the problem he had just detected during his test drive.
“The slow energy supply might be because there’s insufficient energy within the energy blocks. I’ll go get a few level 8 energy blocks to replace it so you can try again.” Yan Hao said, letting go of Sheng Heng’s hand to go get the energy blocks.
“You this kid, you’ve been quite rampant lately. I heard you’re able to take on a mutated zerg by yourself.” Uncle Yang lifted his hand to punch Sheng Heng, however his expression was full of pride.
“It’s just because I took advantage of the convenience of the mech. If we really want to talk about combat experience, then I’m far behind others.” Sheng Heng said modestly.
“You this brat, stop being modest. As if we don’t know that a mimetic mech requires a certain level of mental energy.” Xin Changwei said.
Sheng Heng grinned, “It’s all thanks to Xiao Hao.”
“You this kid, isn’t it just that you have a partner? Bringing him up again and again. Who in the federation doesn’t know that you’re a soft rice eater?” Xin Changwei said irritably.
Sheng Heng just laughed.
“But why aren’t you on the front lines preparing for battle? How do you have the time to come over to accompany Yan Hao?” The Federation today might look stable, with most of the soldiers stationed by the military being in recovery, however as a veteran, it wasn’t hard to see through the signs to know that all of this was just surface level. The current state of the military looked more like they were preparing for impending war than anything else. And Sheng Heng, being one of the federation’s top forces, shouldn’t have the leisure to be with his wife at such a time.
“Right, tell us, what’s the deal with this zerg tide?” Uncle Yang also asked.
“The exact reason is still unclear, but there’s a hypothesis going on at this moment that this zerg tide might be related to the Federation’s recent counterattack against the zergs.” Sheng Heng told them.
“The zergs are retaliating?” Xin Changwei frowned.
“Not retaliating, advancing.”
“Advancing?”
“A very long time ago, biologists speculated that the zergs’ consumption wasn’t merely for reproduction but for evolution, however because of the zergs’ low intelligence, very few people in the Federation believed it, and even those who did didn’t think that the evolution would happen quickly, as the evolution of a higher intelligence requires a long time. However the appearance of the mutated zergs has shattered our understanding of evolution.” Sheng Heng continued, “The biologists suspect that the zergs out there posing with great momentum aren’t the mainstay of zerg evolution, and that their role is likely only to provide nutrition for the evolving zergs.”
“Ai-ya, can’t you make it a little simple? I don’t understand.” Uncle Yang scratched his head in annoyance, indicating that he was getting more and more confused.
Sheng Heng smiled, “To put it simply, the zergs had already planned to initiate a zerg tide, it was just not now. It might have been years or even decades later. It was our surprise attack on the zergs that caused the zerg tide to happen earlier.”
“Bang!”
