Chapter 56.1 Base

The spaceship had been sailing in space for three days and Yan Hao had spent the majority of that time in the maintenance room getting familiar with Sheng Heng’s and Cheng Wenkang’s mechs. Actually, he was mainly familiarizing himself with Cheng Wenkang’s mech Savage Bull. After all, he had modified Sheng Heng’s mech Black Soul himself, so he was already very familiar with it.

Before he left, Old Pang had given Yan Hao a lot of remedial knowledge and given him some information on mech maintenance, but the time was too short that even a genius wouldn’t be able to master the techniques of mech maintenance in three days, hence Yan Hao took his time on the spaceship to catch up.

Sheng Heng spent most of his time in the maintenance room, practicing with Black Soul while Yan Hao overhauled Savage Bull. Because mechs below level five had low sensitivity and weren’t suitable for close combat when fighting zergs, all mechs below level five were basically equipped with long-range weapons. Level five mechs, on the other hand, were equipped with some simple and easy-to-operate melee weapons for transitional purposes. Only mechs from level six onwards were equipped with melee weapons that were powerful enough to kill.

And Black Soul was equipped with such a lance. Previously, Sheng Heng’s hands were injured and so were unable to bear the high intensity operating commands of the weapon, so this lance had been hidden in Black Soul’s body and had never been used. It wasn’t until Yan Hao had modified Black Soul that Sheng Heng began to experiment with this weapon.

In between his studies, Yan Hao would occasionally look up and see the dominant figure of Black Soul wielding the lance and every time he saw this scene, a look of envy would appear in his eyes. That heroic fighting stance was what every young boy had longed for since he was a child and even though he knew he wasn’t good at it, his blood would still heat up at the sight.

Just then, Sheng Heng also completed the connection of a set of movements, opened the cockpit and leapt down from Black Soul’s chest, his body nudging twice on Black Soul’s thigh before he landed lightly.

“Clap clap clap~~”

Although this wasn’t the first time he was seeing Sheng Heng descend from the mech like this, Yan Hao couldn’t help but applaud and praise how handsome this move was every time he saw it.

Sheng Heng smiled lightly as he walked over. His training suit was already soaked with sweat, but his face was rosy and his gaze was crystal clear, a far cry from the ashen look he would have every time after his previous overtrainings.

“Senior, have some water.” Yan Hao handed over a bottle of water.

“Thank you.” Lifting his hand, Sheng Heng took it then sat in a natural manner next to Yan Hao, “How are your studies going?”

Yan Hao shook his head, crestfallen, “I might not be able to help much with this assessment, so you guys should try to not let the mechs get hurt.”

Smiling, Sheng Heng rubbed his head, “Mech maintenance relies on practice, not maths problems, so even if you’re a genius, you can’t rely on self-learning instead of practice.”

“I know. When I go back, I will go to my teacher’s place every weekend to study.” Old Pang had also said something similar. Yan Hao was very quick at grasping theoretical knowledge, but with mech building, practice sometimes took precedence over theory.

“You don’t have to worry about this assessment. Most of the students in the class have level four mechs, so this assessment is probably prepared according to the standard of level four mechs. Black Soul and Savage Bull are both level five mechs, so there shouldn’t be too much damage.” Sheng Heng continued, “Besides, fatty and I don’t care much about the results. We’re here this time mainly to test the results of Black Soul’s modifications.”

“Then I’ll just fill in the headcount quietly.” Yan Hao said.

“Okay.” Sheng Heng put the half-drunk bottle of water down and when he turned around again, he saw Yan Hao, who had just been laughing and joking with him, staring at Black Soul with a burning gaze.

“What’s wrong? Is there something wrong with Black Soul?” Sheng Heng asked subconsciously.

“No.” Yan Hao shook his head, “I was just thinking, if I’m able to finish developing the mimetic system, whether when the time comes I can also operate a mech so handsomely like you do. With a swipe, two sections of lances slide out from between your arms, then clang together and turn into Obscure Darkness.”

Obscure Darkness Lance, a melee weapon configured on Black Soul’s body, was hidden under Black Soul’s arms when not in use and would slide out from under his hands in battle, with the two sections facing each other to form a full lance. The movement of Black Soul assembling Obscure Darkness Lance was very cool and full of an indescribable dominance which made Yan Hao’s eyes shine.

“I’ll teach you when the time comes.” This wasn’t the first time that Yan Hao had shown his desire to pilot a mech and Sheng Heng felt that he could help Yan Hao in this regard.

“I’ll remember what you’ve said.”

“En.”

“I have a good memory, you can’t go back on your promise.”

Sheng Heng was amused. Was there any logical relationship between good memory and one going back on one’s promise?

“I also have a good memory.” Sheng Heng said in response.

Sheng Heng’s answer had nothing to do with the fact that he wouldn’t go back on his words, but Yan Hao was satisfied. It seemed that in his perception, as long as Sheng Heng was saying that he would remember, then it meant he wouldn’t go back on his words.

In the blink of an eye, three days passed and the spaceship arrived at No. 3 Desolate Planet, the planet that the assessment was going to take place on without any problems.

The moment they landed on the planet’s base, they were received by a special person who Xiao Tianhan went up to meet after docking. After the two of them chatted for a while, Xiao Tianhan walked back with a serious expression on his face.

“The assessment starts now.” Xiao Tianhan said to the crowd, “From now on, all the students of the Mech Piloting Department will enter into combat state.”

“What?!” Exclamations of shock rose up.

“Teacher, we’ve only just gotten off the spaceship and haven’t rested yet.”

“Yes teach, at least let us eat something and sleep for the night.”

“You want to rest, right? Then abandon the assessment. As long as you abandon the assessment, from now on, you can rest until you go back.” Xiao Tianhan’s eyes swept over the crowd coldly and with just that one glance, the students who had been clamoring for a break just now quieted down immediately.

When Xiao Tianhan saw that the noise had died down, he continued, “No. 3 Desolate Planet is a planet that was just rescued from the zerg race three hundred years ago and after the expulsion of the zerg race back then, many zerg eggs were left on the planet. In order to train warriors to fight the zerg race, the Federation left these eggs behind and allowed them to multiply and grow. However in order not to cause harm, the zergs here will be controlled at level 4 strength and once there are zergs above level 4, they would be destroyed by the Federation. With your strength, acting as a team is more than enough to cope on this desolate planet.”
