Chapter 83.2 Phantom Beasts
“Phantom beasts move incredibly fast and are good at hiding their tracks, so they can’t be found just by searching; one can only lure them out using mental energy.” Phantom beasts loved to consume mental energy, and the purer and stronger the mental energy was, the more they liked it. So, to make them come out voluntarily, mental energy had to be used as bait.
“Then let me do it. I’ll release my mental energy to lure it out.” Cheng Wenkang said.
With that, the two of them looked for a hidden spot then began setting up a trap. The trap was simple: they dug a hole then placed a small electric stun gun at the bottom so that once the phantom beast fell in, it would be knocked out by the electric stun gun.
Once the trap was set, they hid behind a large tree about three meters away then Cheng Wenkang started releasing his mental energy which hovered around the area of the trap.
Ten minutes passed like this, yet the woods still remained eerily quiet. Not to mention there being a sign of the phantom beast, there wasn’t even a single bird. Cheng Wenkang, on the hand, was so exhausted from his continuous release of highly intense mental energy that his face had turned pale.
“Is it that the phantom beast isn’t around here?” Cheng Wenkang said with a pale face.
“It’s also possible that your mental energy level isn’t high enough.” Sheng Heng said in answer, showing him the information he had just found online about phantom beasts.
Cheng Wenkang read it out loud, “Phantom beasts feed on mental energy and particularly prefer high level mental energy. However once they taste high level mental energy, they wouldn’t be interested in low level mental energy within a short period of time, so when feeding them, you have to…. Which means since it just devoured your S level mental energy, it doesn’t even care about my A- level mental energy. Why didn’t you tell me earlier? I’ve wasted my mental energy.”
Cheng Wenkang simply wanted to cry. He had been releasing his mental energy without reservation just now in an attempt to lure the phantom beast over that now, he felt as if his body had been drained.
“I’ll do it.” Sheng Heng said with a smile as he shook his head.
“Thank you boss.” Cheng Wenkang had been waiting for these words.
“Don’t get your hopes up too soon. I used up quite a bit of mental energy earlier while exploring the veins, so I’m not sure if I can lure the phantom beast out.” Sheng Heng warned in advance.
“It’s fine. If we can’t catch it today, we’ll try again tomorrow.” Cheng Wenkang said cheekily.
The corners of Sheng Heng’s lips twitched, but he didn’t refuse. Cheng Wenkang was his good friend, so he would definitely help him with this favor.
Closing his eyes, he released his mental energy once more and to make sure that the phantom beast discovered the mental energy more quickly, he separated and sent out more than a dozen tiny thin strands of mental energy to wander through the forest.
About a minute later, one strand of his mental energy vanished silently.
Opening his eyes, he winked meaningfully at Cheng Wenkang.
Understanding the signal, Cheng Wenkang’s whole body tensed up as he focused on the direction of the trap, ready to spring into action at any moment.
Retracting his excess mental energy, Sheng Heng sent it out strand by strand, making them appear in succession between the location he had pinned of the phantom beast just now and the trap, leading the phantom beast step by step in the direction of the trap. Finally, after the twelfth strand of mental energy had been consumed, a fluffy white beast the size of a cat appeared in their line of sight.
When Sheng Heng saw the phantom beast, he also breathed a sigh of relief. With his mental energy being devoured continuously by the phantom beast, if it hadn’t come out the moment it did, he might have not been able to hold on much longer.
It was just left with a final move.
Sheng Heng released the last strand of mental energy, making it move back and forth around the trap. The moment the mental energy appeared, the head of the phantom beast turned towards it and its entire body lunged forward, pouncing in the direction of the mental energy and the location of the trap.
However just then, another surge of mental energy suddenly appeared, rushing towards the phantom beast. Saying a ‘not good’ in his heart, Sheng Heng wanted to withdraw his mental energy, however it was too late. The two strands of mental energy collided and Sheng Heng suffered a backlash, which immediately made him feel as if his sea of consciousness was about to explode.
“Ugh!” Sheng Heng cried out in pain, his vision darkening as he collapsed to the ground.
“Boss?!” When Cheng Wenkang, who had already leapt to catch the phantom beast saw that something was wrong with Sheng Heng, he run back hurriedly, helping him up from the ground anxiously. “Boss, what’s wrong with you?”
At the same time, he quickly sent a distress signal using his light brain.
“Someone is…..” Sheng Heng said with difficulty.
And at that moment, hurried footsteps could be heard coming from the other side of the forest, after which a group of five people appeared in front of Cheng Wenkang, two of whom he recognized immediately.
“Sima Mingxuan, Yan Fei?!” Cheng Wenkang roared.
Sima Mingxuan looked at Cheng Wenkang and then at Sheng Heng whom Cheng Wenkang was holding up with surprise, as if he hadn’t expected to find someone else here. Meanwhile Yan Fei, who was standing beside him had already run to the edge of the trap to pull the phantom beast which had been rendered unconscious by the electric stun gun out.
“Senior Sima, it’s a phantom beast.” Yan Fei confirmed before placing the phantom beast into a cage they had prepared long ago.
Cheng Wenkang’s face darkened immediately. “Are you guys trying to steal from us?”
Instead of answering, Sima Mingxuan scanned their surroundings then asked, “Why are you two juniors here alone?”
Sima Mingxuan was aware that second year students had come to this area in search of ore veins, however there were very few of such veins in this location that even the local resource base personnel wouldn’t come to this area.
“That phantom beast is our catch.” Cheng Wenkang wasn’t easily diverted.
Frowning, Sima Mingxuan was just about to say something when three mechas suddenly whistled through the air, landing immediately after seeing them.
“Fatty, what’s going on? I received your distress signal and rushed here immediately.” Sun Zhu said as he got down from his mecha and run towards Cheng Wenkang. “What happened to Sheng Heng?”
“Boss suffered a mental backlash as he was trying to help me catch a phantom beast.” Cheng Wenkang explained.
“A phantom beast?!” Sun Zhu shouted in shock then looked instinctively in the direction of Sima Mingxuan and the others.
Realizing it was already too late to hide the phantom beast, Sima Mingxuan could only stand there with an ugly expression on his face.

Time to crush SMX and YF yet again. Do they think they can really stand against Sheng Heng’s family? This is now the second time he has stood against him. It had better be resolved properly this time around.
Thanks for the chapter!
What ugly expression, what hiding the phantom beast??? It wasn’t his to begin with!! I knew that for him to be with the idiotic brother he couldn’t be all that good either
Rereading and it really irritates me that Sima Mingxuan deliberately injured ml & tried to steal his prey at the same time. I wish there were greater consequences or more compensation offered.
