Chapter 94.1 Extra 3
Editor: Jodi
Gu Yuanzhao got the highest-level blue card in the base.
With this card, he could exchange it daily at the cafeteria for ten wheat buns, a pound of rice or flour, plus 500 grams of vegetables and 250 grams of meat.
In a world where food was so scarce, this was top-tier treatment, and only a large base like the Third Base could afford to supply fresh vegetables and meat.
Many people in the apocalypse, including Bai Jing, had gone months, even half a year, without a single bite of meat.
The staff arranged for two armed soldiers to escort Gu Yuanzhao, but he turned them down without hesitation.
The inspector forced a smile, “Mr. Gu, your status isn’t what it used to be. These two soldiers are specially trained to ensure your safety…”
However before he could finish speaking, the tall man kicked straight through the steel plate meant for strength testing. It was only three centimeters thick, but even so, the sight of it sent a chill through everyone present.
Damn. With this kind of strength, a low-level zombie’s skull would probably get crushed in one kick.
And on top of that—he was a rare dual-ability user!
The registration officer made a special note of the name ‘Gu Yuanzhao’ and reported it to the base’s higher-ups.
Gu Yuanzhao left the two soldiers behind and walked up to the teenager who was standing off to the side. “Ah Jing, let’s go.”
“Mm.” Bai Jing glanced at the map in his hand.
The Third Base had been converted from a top-ranked high school in B City, and a whole area of surrounding school district housing, open land, and the back mountain had been incorporated into it. There were cafeterias, dorms, training grounds, and even farmland. Enough to be self-sufficient under the right conditions.
Along the way, makeshift tents were everywhere, housing mostly ordinary people with no special skills.
Without supernatural abilities or trade skills, all they could do was farm, water crops, or raise poultry. Things which were just enough to earn three wheat buns a day to barely survive.
But getting more than that? Impossible.
Just when they passed a tightly shut tent, they both heard something inside that didn’t sound quite right.
Bai Jing paused for a moment, then kept walking forward, his face emotionless.
This kind of thing was common in the apocalypse. Many women didn’t have the physical strength men had, so if they wanted to survive, they had to rely on… other means.
And as long as it was ‘mutual consent’, the base didn’t interfere.
However Gu Yuanzhao was finally seeing firsthand just how brutal this era really was.
He stepped forward slightly and took the teenager’s hand gently, vowing silently that he would never let anything harm him.
Bai Jing struggled a little but couldn’t break free. Just as he frowned slightly, about to say something, the other person had already let go, as if he knew better.
His slender fingers clutched the straps of his backpack tightly, and for once, Bai Jing’s heart felt unsettled.
In the apocalypse, the last thing you could trust was human nature. He knew that perfectly well. So why hadn’t he learned his lesson?
And yet, when the man let go, he still found himself craving that brief warmth.
He thought back to when he had just escaped from A City. His childhood friend, the one he had grown up with, had shoved him straight into the zombies behind them without a second thought, just to save himself. And his face had twisted with a kind of viciousness that he had never seen before.
However just at that critical moment, he suddenly awakened his sense perception ability.
In that instant, everything around him became crystal clear, and, using his ability, he managed to dodge both his friend’s push and the surrounding zombies’ attacks. However his friend—too slow—ended up with a zombie sinking its teeth into his neck.
His friend’s agonized screams still echoed in his ears. Bai Jing could still remember the mix of fear and cold indifference he had felt at that moment.
If he hadn’t awakened his ability back then, he would’ve been the one to die.
He had lost count of how many times he had narrowly escaped death after that. But with each zombie he killed, his reflexes and speed sharpened, and fighting zombies became more and more natural.
Maybe this sense perception ability wasn’t the most powerful, but he was still grateful for it.
And with his heightened perception, he had dodged countless zombie attacks by a hair’s breadth. And that was how he had managed to survive long enough to reach the base.
But halfway through his journey, he had been lucky enough to run into a team of ability users. They saw him kill zombies, didn’t look down on his ability, and even invited him to travel with them.
However one of them, a man in his forties, treated him particularly well—offering him food, water, and even clean clothes. But Bai Jing’s instincts told him something was off. The way the man looked at him made him uncomfortable, so he stayed on guard and never touched any of it.
Until that one night, just as he was about to fall asleep, when he heard movement, followed by the sound of a tent being slit open.
That middle-aged man had thought he had drunk the drugged water and had lunged at him, expecting an easy target. Instead, Bai Jing kicked him away.
Just thinking of the man who was even older than his father, as well as the look on his face, made Bai Jing sick to his stomach.
After that, he never teamed up with anyone again.
Thinking of this, the teenager lowered his eyes slightly, his long eyelashes trembling faintly.
Gu Yuanzhao had treated him so well from the very first moment they met—there had to be a reason. Otherwise, why would he be so nice? It didn’t make sense, especially in the apocalypse.
He should draw a clear line between them and pay back the favor as soon as possible.
