Chapter 98.2

Editor: Jodi

Yang Wen Shuo’s expression turned grim. He had fought a level three zombie before and so knew just how terrifying their speed was. Ordinary supernatural ability users didn’t stand a chance. At the very least, they had to be at level three themselves just to put up a fight.

Originally, he had been the only level three supernatural ability user in the group. But now—

His gaze shifted toward Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao. A deep sense of relief filled him. He was beyond grateful that the base had sent these two along for the mission, because without them, this trip would have been another complete failure.

But even so, he had used up a lot of energy in the earlier fight. He hadn’t recovered yet—he wasn’t in a state to take on a level three zombie.

Bai Jing met his eyes and gave him a small nod before making a quick hand gesture: Stay here and wait.

Then, he and Gu Yuanzhao deliberately acted as if they hadn’t noticed anything. Casually, they walked along the first row of shelves, scanning their surroundings, before circling toward the second row.

The moment they stepped into position—

Two level two zombies lunged!

Bai Jing reacted instantly, rolling to the side, raising his energy gun, and firing twice in rapid succession. Bang! Bang! Two perfect headshots, one after the other. The first zombie’s skull shattered, blackened blood spraying everywhere.

Gu Yuanzhao moved like lightning. He dodged behind the second zombie, his energy sword shrinking into a short 30-centimeter blade. Then with a single slash, he severed the zombie’s head clean off. It rolled across the floor a few times before stopping.

Seeing its plan fall apart, the level three zombie tried to retreat. Mid-leap, it twisted in the air, its grotesque face contorted in shock, clearly attempting to flee.

Bai Jing immediately fired at it, but the zombie moved so fast that it dodged both shots with ease.

The two bullets whizzed past, missing their mark, causing the level three zombie to let out a mocking, guttural screech, as if laughing at Bai Jing’s failed attempt.

Turns out, this human was nothing special after all—

Then, suddenly—

Bang! Bang!

Two more shots rang out. This time, both bullets struck the back of the zombie’s head, knocking it off the shelf it had been perched on. And as it hit the ground, Gu Yuanzhao’s sword was already swinging down, slicing straight through its neck.

Its head fell, its decaying mouth frozen in a twisted sneer.

Turns out, Bai Jing’s earlier shots had been a setup. He had already predicted the zombie’s escape route, leading it straight into his trap. But the zombie, with its limited intelligence, had failed to understand this simple ‘bait and switch’ trick.

Bai Jing put on a pair of medical gloves and picked up the fallen crystal cores—two thumbnail-sized ones from the level two zombies and a slightly larger one, about the size of a coin, from the level three zombie. He rinsed them off with clean water.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group had been waiting anxiously.

When Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao returned, Bai Jing casually made an ‘OK’ gesture.

Everyone let out a collective breath of relief.

A level three zombie—

And they had taken it down so quickly.

Their strength was simply terrifying.

Yang Wen Shuo exhaled slowly, keeping his voice low: “We need to move fast and grab what we can. Prioritize food that’s compact and has a long shelf life. Move quickly!”

“Yu Kai, Qiao Lan, protect Guan Yue. A team will stay behind to stand guard. In two minutes, Bai Jing, Gu Yuanzhao, and I will go ahead to scout for more threats.”

The others nodded and immediately rushed toward the shelves.

And seeing the untouched, perfectly preserved food, their eyes shone with excitement. They wasted no time stuffing their backpacks full.

For missions like this, the base allowed them to keep a small portion of what they gathered. After all, every trip was a gamble with death, so the higher-ups turned a blind eye to a little personal gain.

Guan Yue was especially focused, rapidly sweeping items into her spatial storage. This underground supermarket was completely untouched. Shelves were packed with food—cookies, instant noodles, all kinds of snacks. No one had gotten to them yet.

Then—

A loud crash!

A pile of food fell from a shelf, hitting the ground with a loud noise. Bai Jing frowned slightly at the sound.

But right now, no one cared about making noise. Everyone was too busy looting the place like mad.

Guan Yue pressed her hand against each item, instantly storing it in her space. Within seconds, she had cleared several entire shelves.

She ignored the bulky, air-filled snack bags in favor of more compact, high-calorie foods. What she really wanted were chocolates, energy bars, and—if she was lucky—some kind of preserved meat. Anything rich in protein would be a rare find. She could always hide some before handing in the official supplies.

Bai Jing grabbed a few token packs of instant noodles and moved forward with Gu Yuanzhao.

But something felt off.

According to the mission reports, the base had sent two previous teams here, and out of all those supernatural ability users, only two had survived.

Did that mean none of them had reached this place?

The zombies on the way here had been numerous, but most were just level one. A team with a modified off-road vehicle and supernatural abilities should have been able to handle them.

So where had those people gone?

A sharp sense of unease crept into his mind. His pace quickened.

Then, his sharp eyes caught something—

Atop the sixth row of shelves, several sets of bloodstained camouflage uniforms.

His heart clenched.

Gu Yuanzhao, being taller, reached up and pulled them down. Sure enough, each uniform bore a nameplate.

Li Dong, level three supernatural ability user.

Chen Gang, level two supernatural ability user.

Xi Bin, level two supernatural ability user.

Zhu Ying, level one supernatural ability user.

If a level three supernatural ability user had been killed, then whatever did this had to be at least level three, or probably higher.

Zombies absorbed energy from supernatural ability users when they fed on them. And the stronger the victim, the faster they evolved.

Bai Jing’s fingers clenched around the nameplates.

Further down, they found even more sets of different uniforms, clearly from supernatural ability users belonging to other bases.

A chill ran down Bai Jing’s spine.

If this thing had devoured so many supernatural ability users, then its level…

Even if it had started as a level three zombie, by now, it had to be at least level five. And that was being optimistic.

Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao exchanged a look before retreating quietly.

If it had just been the two of them, they might have been able to fight it.

But with so many people here? They needed to leave, immediately.

Bai Jing turned to Yang Wen Shuo and signaled for everyone to gather. In a low voice, he said, “There’s a high chance a level five or higher zombie is here. We need to get to the entrance quietly and leave before it notices us. Then we blow the passage shut behind us—”

However some people hesitated.

A level five zombie?

The apocalypse had only been around for a year, and the strongest supernatural ability users were just barely at level three. Even level three zombies were rare—so how could there be a level five one already?

And then there was another issue—

No one wanted to leave behind all these supplies.

The third row of shelves had chocolate and candy, and further down, there might be canned meat. For people who hadn’t eaten real food in ages, this was too tempting to give up.

“Just one more minute, let me fill my bag, and then we go.”

“Give me thirty seconds. I just need to grab a few more packs of instant noodles, then I’m out!”

Even as Bai Jing spoke, people were still shoving food into their bags, stuffing what they couldn’t fit into their clothes, even using their jackets as makeshift sacks.

Guan Yue, especially, hadn’t even registered his warning. She was too busy looting.

Heavens, half a shelf full of Ferrero Rocher—something she couldn’t even afford before the apocalypse—and now, it was all sitting in her space.

Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but smile.

She walked a bit further and found that the sixth row of shelves was stacked with sausages, grilled meats, and beef jerky. Excited, she immediately called out to the others.

Just then, Bai Jing felt an incredibly terrifying, bone-chilling presence.

He instantly activated his sense perception ability, but he couldn’t detect the figure at all. It was just too fast, faster than any zombie he had ever encountered!

“It’s coming, fall back!!”

Bai Jing’s expression turned ice-cold. He gripped his silver energy gun tightly and fired several shots into the air, but none of them hit the target.

The others only saw a dark blur darting back and forth in the air, moving so fast that it was practically invisible. Fear gripped their hearts, and they started sprinting towards the exit frantically.

Guan Yue sneered. She didn’t believe there was any so-called level five zombie.

But just as she reached out to grab more supplies, a shadow suddenly loomed overhead.

Terrified, she looked up, only to see a zombie clinging to the ceiling, grinning at her in an eerie, twisted way.

She screamed on the spot, “Ah—!!”
