Chapter 98.1
Editor: Jodi
Hearing Bai Jing’s cold voice, Huang Tianhao, who had been standing there stiffly like a statue, finally snapped back to reality.
His heart pounded like a drum, his breath coming in short, rapid gasps, like bellows that had been pulled to the limit. The life-and-death crisis had drenched him in cold sweat, soaking his clothes completely.
He looked at Bai Jing, his pupils contracting into tiny pinpoints—an obvious sign of fear.
He wiped the cold sweat dripping down his forehead, swallowed a few times unconsciously, then forced out a dry, shaky, “S-satisfied? Of course, I’m s-satisfied.”
Just now, in that split second when Bai Jing fired the gun, he could almost feel the heat and speed of the bullet rushing toward him!
There was absolutely no way to dodge it.
For the first time in his life, he really understood a fact.
And that was that even with his lightning-based supernatural ability, there was no way to avoid it—the speed was just too fast!
From the moment Bai Jing raised his gun, aimed, and pulled the trigger, the entire process couldn’t have taken more than 0.1 seconds.
And a normal person’s reaction time was around 0.2 to 0.3 seconds. Even supernatural ability users, who were slightly faster, couldn’t match Bai Jing’s shooting speed, let alone dodge in such an extreme situation!
In that instant, he had felt an overwhelming sense of death crashing over him like a monstrous tidal wave. He was knocked down, drowned in an endless sea of darkness, utterly powerless to resist.
If Bai Jing’s aim had been just a fraction higher, the one whose head got blown off wouldn’t have been a zombie, it would have been him!
It turns out, he wasn’t even close to being a match for this teenager. If Bai Jing wanted to, he could kill him easily, without even breaking a sweat.
Now he finally understood why the captain and Yu Kai had told him to shut up immediately. Damn it, he really had been a complete idiot, hadn’t he?
He had basically humiliated himself.
Feeling the eyes of the people around him, he wanted to dig a hole and crawl inside. His face burned red-hot, like he had just been slapped repeatedly—loud and clear.
But since time was pressing, no one dwelled on the matter. Bai Jing had already given him a lesson, and that was more than enough.
In this apocalypse, strength ruled above all. After today, no one would be dumb enough to challenge him again.
Trying to make up for his mistake, Huang Tianhao volunteered to plant the explosives at the entrance, taking two soldiers with him.
The lighter ignited the fuse, and the three of them retreated at full speed immediately.
A few seconds later, with a loud ‘BOOM’, rocks and debris exploded in all directions, sending clouds of dust flying everywhere. The blocked passage was blown open, revealing the entrance to the underground supermarket.
At the same time, hundreds of zombies with pale, decayed faces turned toward the noise, letting out sharp, unrelenting screeches. Then they started swarming toward them, an endless tide of rotting flesh.
“Attack!”
With Hu Kun’s command, a storm of gunfire erupted.
“Shit, there’s so many of them—!”
Yu Kai cursed. He had never seen this many zombies in one place before. And they must not have smelled humans for a long time, because yellowish drool dripped from their rotten mouths as they rushed forward like maniacs, making his scalp tingle.
Flames ignited in his hands, and he hurled fireballs at the zombies’ heads without stopping.
Qiao Lan’s wind-based ability fanned the flames, creating a raging inferno. The zombies struggled in the fire for a few moments before turning to ashes, leaving only their hardened crystal cores clinking as they hit the ground.
Yu Kai controlled the fire carefully, making sure it didn’t spread to the buildings or the people. In no time, sweat poured down his face like rain.
Meanwhile Yang Wen Shuo’s hands moved swiftly, forming razor-sharp ice blades that whizzed through the air, piercing through zombie skulls with deadly precision.
However using his supernatural ability so intensely drained his energy fast, that soon, his breathing turned heavy.
Bai Jing pulled out his energy gun, taking precise headshots while dodging the zombies attacking from behind. His movements were incredibly fast—one shot, one kill. Every bullet hit its mark, his kill speed just as high as the supernatural ability users’.
While Gu Yuanzhao’s energy sword slashed through the air, sending waves of raw power through the battlefield. He and Bai Jing worked seamlessly together, clearing out zombies not just in their immediate area but also taking down the ones attacking the soldiers.
Huang Tianhao stayed behind to protect Guan Yue. His supernatural ability hadn’t recovered yet, but he still had a metal rod in hand, which was enough to handle one or two stray zombies.
Guan Yue’s face was as pale as a sheet as she hid behind him for dear life, trying to hold back a scream.
Finally, after a brutal fight, the massive zombie horde was wiped out. Piles of corpses lay stacked on the ground.
Except for Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao, all the supernatural ability users looked drained, their faces slightly pale.
The sheer number of zombies had forced them to unleash their abilities non-stop. And now, they were at their limit, leaning on each other, gasping for breath, not even caring about the putrid stench of the dead anymore.
Even Guan Yue, who had been shielded behind Huang Tianhao, had nearly collapsed several times from sheer terror. There were moments when those rotting, clawed hands had almost grabbed her!
But when they glanced at Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao, the two of them looked completely unfazed, that was, aside from slightly heavier breathing, they didn’t show a single sign of exhaustion.
Everyone stared at them with envy. What the hell, were these two even human? They were downright terrifying.
The military squad leader stepped forward with his soldiers and gave the two of them a solemn salute.
If Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao hadn’t stepped in, there was no way they would have come out of this without casualties.
Their squad was originally sent to clear the way for the supernatural ability users, and for the sake of supplies, they were prepared to sacrifice themselves if necessary.
Yang Wen Shuo took a long moment to steady his breathing before saying, “…We can’t stay here. If we linger too long, the zombies from the streets will catch our scent and swarm in. We need to keep moving.”
“Understood!”
Even though everyone was exhausted, they knew staying put was even more dangerous. There was no choice but to push forward.
Yang Wen Shuo shone a flashlight down the underground passage. Bai Jing spoke at the right moment: “There are no zombies within twenty meters for now.”
Hearing this, the group felt a wave of relief. After that intense battle, they had no energy left for another fight.
Only now did they realize just how useful Bai Jing’s sense perception ability was in a place like this.
“Alright, let’s go.”
Yang Wen Shuo took the lead with Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao at the front, the others following closely behind, while Yu Kai and two snipers guarded the rear.
The underground passage wasn’t long. Before they knew it, lights appeared ahead, probably emergency power kicking in due to a system failure. The area was still well-lit.
The intel from the base was accurate. The large underground supermarket was completely intact. Rows of shelves stood at the entrance, packed with all kinds of snacks—biscuits, instant noodles—tempting them to grab everything in sight.
Everyone’s eyes widened at the sight, and they couldn’t help swallowing, itching to rush forward.
“Wait.”
Bai Jing released his sense perception ability, his voice turning serious. “There are two level two zombies… and one level three zombie behind the second row of shelves.”
A chilling silence fell over the group.
There were zombies here.
And not just any zombies, there was a rare level three one.
Just moments ago, the explosion had been loud enough to shake their eardrums. Zombies were highly sensitive to sound and the scent of humans, so they had assumed every last one would have rushed at them and been taken out.
Plus, they had just cleared the passage, and there hadn’t been a single zombie in sight. So naturally, they had let their guard down.
No one had expected there to be two level two zombies—and worse, a level three zombie—hiding behind the shelves!
In this apocalypse, zombies evolved just like supernatural ability users did. Level three zombies were rare in the early days of the outbreak, and aside from Yang Wen Shuo, no one here had actually seen one in person. They had only heard stories about them from other people at the base.
It was said that level one zombies were slow and relied purely on instinct. Level two zombies, in addition to their base instincts, developed raw physical strength. But level three zombies? They evolved speed, and some even started to show early signs of intelligence.
This level three zombie was clearly smart.
It had intentionally hidden behind the second row of shelves, the perfect blind spot where no one could see it. Not only that, it had also kept two level two zombies close by, using them as bait.
If they had rushed forward recklessly, they might have managed to dodge the first zombie, maybe even the second, but the level three zombie? It was faster and stronger. It would have caught them off guard and gone straight for the kill.
If Bai Jing hadn’t been here, if they had walked in blind, they probably would have been dead the moment they stepped past the first row of shelves.
