Chapter 97.1

Editor: Jodi

Two mornings later, Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao arrived at the base entrance.

A team of five supernatural ability users were already waiting there—three men and two women, all dressed in military green camouflage. Besides them, ten soldiers with rifles stood by, ready for action.

When the two approached, everyone was a little surprised by how striking they looked.

“I’m the team leader for this mission, Yang Wen Shuo, a level-three ice-type ability user. Introduce yourselves one by one.”

He looked about twenty-five or twenty-six, casually leaning against a wall with a cigarette between his fingers. His tone was firm, carrying a certain arrogance that left no room for argument.

But he had every right to be this confident, because being a level-three supernatural ability user, especially an ice-type, made him one of the strongest in the base.

“Yes! My name is Huang Tianhao, level-two lightning-type ability user.”

“Yu Kai, level-two fire-type ability user.”

“Guan Yue, spatial ability user.”

“Qiao Lan, level-two wind-type ability user.”

A full team of level-two or higher supernatural ability users, four of them having large-scale attack abilities, were definitely the elites of the third base. Clearly, the base was taking this mission very seriously.

The leader of the soldier squad also introduced himself. Their job was to assist the supernatural ability users in clearing out zombies.

Yang Wen Shuo turned to Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao, scanning them up and down.

These two were definitely good-looking, but looks didn’t kill zombies.

Originally, the mission was set for their five-member team, but yesterday, the base suddenly added two more people at the last minute.

Yang Wen Shuo was not happy about this. Their squad had been working together for six months, and had formed a strong bond with excellent teamwork.

What’s more H City was extremely dangerous, a place regular ability users would just be walking into death, and worse, they’d become burdens.

But since the higher-ups insisted, he had no choice but to obey.

He’d reviewed their files yesterday. When he saw Gu Yuanzhao’s spatial and strength-based abilities, his attitude softened a bit. A spatial ability with fifty cubic meters of storage was rare enough, let alone someone with dual abilities. No wonder the base changed its plans.

But this Bai Jing…

When he looked at Bai Jing’s listed ability, he had frowned.

After the others finished introducing themselves, it was Gu Yuanzhao and Bai Jing’s turn.

“Gu Yuanzhao, spatial and strength-based abilities.”

“Bai Jing, basic ability, sense perception.”

“Sense perception? What the hell is that? Never heard of it.”

Huang Tianhao shot Bai Jing a dismissive glance, his face full of disdain.

This kid looked way too pretty— he was probably just some eye candy. When the zombies came, he’d probably scream in terror and drag everyone else down with him.

Bai Jing didn’t bother responding to Huang Tianhao’s attitude. Instead, he explained calmly, “It’s an enhanced sense perception. I can detect the number and level of zombies within a twenty-meter range.”

Others might think this ability was useless, but Bai Jing never saw it that way, nor did he feel ashamed of it.

“Just twenty meters? That’s—”

Huang Tianhao was about to say more when Yang Wen Shuo shot him a look, cutting him off.

“Enough. I don’t need to remind you all how dangerous this mission is. Stay sharp, check your weapons, food, and water, and get ready to move out.”

His gaze landed on Bai Jing for a moment before he added, “Watch yourselves. Don’t drag the team down. Now get in the car.”

The others exchanged brief nods with Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao before climbing into the vehicle.

As Huang Tianhao passed Bai Jing, he let out a quiet sneer, making his dissatisfaction clear.

Gu Yuanzhao shot him a cold glance, but now wasn’t the time to pick a fight. They all got in the car.

It was a modified Humvee that could fit 8-10 people. The exterior was reinforced with thick iron plating to prevent zombie attacks.

The ten soldiers boarded an armored vehicle as well. The armored car had a turret mounted on top, with two snipers stationed on either side, fully equipped and on guard.

Once inside, each person received a walkie-talkie to stay in constant communication.

Gu Yuanzhao and Bai Jing sat in the back row, with Guan Yue beside them.

She stole a glance at the mature, handsome man beside her, her cheeks tinged red.

This man wasn’t just good-looking, he had an air of power around him, and he had dual abilities. He was perfect.

Most of the men in the base were either strong but ugly or attractive but weak. As one of the rare spatial ability users, Guan Yue never found anyone worth her time. But this man…

A sweet smile on her face, she turned to him. “You’re a spatial ability user too?”

Gu Yuanzhao responded with a cold “Mm”, then casually took out a bottle of water from his bag, his voice soft as he asked, “Ah Jing, are you thirsty?”

Bai Jing shook his head. “I’m fine.”

Gu Yuanzhao pulled him close, resting an arm around his shoulders. “If you get bored, just lean on me and sleep for a while. It’s still a long way to H City.”

Bai Jing: “Mm.”

Guan Yue’s face stiffened, then she turned away angrily.

Since he was clearly not interested, she wasn’t going to embarrass herself further.

Bai Jing, right?

Hah. Good looks wouldn’t save him. Once they started fighting zombies, he’d probably die before anyone had the chance to care.

Feeling slightly better at that thought, she settled into her seat.

The area around the third base had already been cleared, so there were no zombies for now.

And the moment they got onto the highway, the road was completely deserted, so the Humvee sped forward without any obstacles.

Yang Wen Shuo was the one driving, and whenever a stray zombie appeared on the roadside, he would simply floor the gas pedal and ran it over, while the snipers helped clear out any stragglers, making the journey relatively smooth.

After four or five hours on the highway, they exited the overpass and entered H City’s outskirts.

The vehicle pulled over to the side of the road, and everyone took the chance to eat some compressed biscuits and instant noodles, washing them down with bottled water.

Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao each drank two bottles of nutrient solution to replenish their energy, as they were outside and so had to keep things simple.

After a twenty-minute break, they hit the road again, with Yu Kai now in the driver’s seat.

However the moment they entered H City, the zombies started appearing in larger numbers, dozens at a time, drawn in by the scent of living people.

The two snipers picked off zombies with headshots, their aim deadly accurate. But as more zombies swarmed in, even they struggled to keep up. Using the turret was an option, but the noise would only attract even more zombies, hence it was a last resort.

“I’ll go first.” Huang Tianhao said.

Then he pushed himself up through the sunroof and climbed onto the roof of the Humvee.

The roof had been modified with iron railings, and a rope was secured around his waist, hence keeping him tethered to the vehicle.

Zombies had already surrounded them, their claws scraping against the metal exterior, producing sharp, grating noises.

Huang Tianhao raised his arms, spread his fingers wide, then focused his energy. Soon, lightning crackled at his fingertips before surging outward in a golden wave.

The electric current spread in all directions, stunning and paralyzing the surrounding zombies, sending them toppling to the ground.

“Step on it!”

At Yang Wen Shuo’s command, Yu Kai slammed on the gas, and the Humvee plowed forward. The vehicle lurched violently, crushing countless zombie heads beneath its wheels, and in the process, vrystal cores scattered across the road, however no one had time to pick them up.

Most of these were level-one zombies, slow-moving and mindless. Hence each lightning strike wiped out a huge number of them.

Even so, the sheer number of zombies was overwhelming. In just twenty minutes, Huang Tianhao had already used his lightning ability over ten times. Even as a level-two ability user, he was starting to wear out.

Yang Wen Shuo was about to take over, when the others stopped him. “Captain, we haven’t reached the target yet. You’re the strongest, so don’t waste your energy here.”

Yu Kai glanced at Bai Jing through the rearview mirror. “You drive. Qiao Lan and I will take care of the zombies.”

He was a fire-type, and Qiao Lan was a wind-type. And together, they were a deadly combo.

As for that kid in the back… at best, he could handle driving.

Hah, at least he could do that, right?
