Chapter 96.2

Editor: Jodi

“…… Feet shoulder-width apart, aim at the target, and keep your arms steady.”

Gu Yuanzhao stood behind Bai Jing, his hands gently guiding his waist as he lowered his head, adjusting Bai Jing’s right arm slightly to correct his shooting stance.

Bai Jing already had some experience, but most of it came from killing zombies in the field—his technique was rough, relying purely on instinct. His form still needed a lot of fine-tuning.

The energy gun he was holding had an automatic targeting system. It could zoom in on the target and lock onto it, making it relatively easy to use.

He gripped the gun’s handle, his index finger lightly resting on the trigger, ready to fire at any moment.

At the same time, his right eye focused through the sight, locking onto the bullseye. Then, in one swift motion, he pulled the trigger—

A loud “bang” echoed through the range, and the bullet shot straight into the red bullseye, its force so powerful that it punched clean through the target board!

“Not bad.”

Gu Yuanzhao looked at him with an approving smile, while Bai Jing himself felt a rush of excitement.

This gun was amazing. Whether it was speed, power, or precision, everything was on point. Plus, it had almost no recoil, making it incredibly stable to shoot.

Liu Dong, who had been watching from the sidelines, was absolutely stunned.

That shot wasn’t just fired at the target, it felt like it was fired straight into his heart.

This young man was nothing like the other boys he’d played around with.

Bai Jing wasn’t some delicate little flower. He had the face of an angel, sure, but there was something else—an effortless confidence, a casual kind of charm that was impossible to resist, and it was driving Liu Dong absolutely wild.

He ran a hand through his greasy yellow hair, dusted off his clothes, and, unable to hold back any longer, strode right up to the shooting range.

Seeing this, the boy who had been standing next to him, Yi Fan, hesitated for a moment before following.

“I’m Liu Dong, a Level-2 fire ability user. Want to get to know each other?”

Liu Dong grinned, flashing his yellowed teeth, thinking he looked cool as he casually tossed his hair.

A Level-2 ability user—especially a fire-type—wasn’t all that common in the first year of the apocalypse.

Normally, just mentioning his rank was enough to make people suck up to him. He figured this pretty boy would be no different.

Bai Jing glanced at him with a slight frown. He wasn’t planning to respond at all, but considering Liu Dong’s rank, he didn’t want to stir up unnecessary trouble, so he just answered flatly, “Bai Jing.”

Liu Dong’s eyes lit up. “Ohh, so your name’s Bai Jing, huh? What a nice name.”

The sound of Bai Jing’s voice sent a shiver down Liu Dong’s spine, making him even more excited. In his mind, Bai Jing was just playing hard to get.

Eyes filled with nothing but lust, he completely ignored Gu Yuanzhao’s icy gaze and reached out, trying to grab Bai Jing’s hand.

But the moment his hand moved, a strong grip clamped down on his wrist, twisting it back with brutal force—

“CRACK.”

A sickening snap echoed through the air.

Liu Dong let out a bloodcurdling scream as his left wrist bent at an unnatural angle, hanging limply.

“Fuck! That hurts like hell! You b*stard, I’ll fucking kill you!”

Sweat poured down Liu Dong’s forehead as his face twisted in agony. His eyes flashed with vicious intent as he clenched his right fist, summoning a roaring fireball before hurling it straight at them.

Bai Jing reacted instantly, rolling to the ground and dodging the attack. Gu Yuanzhao, on the other hand, didn’t even need to dodge—he simply moved so fast that he disappeared from sight, reappearing right behind Liu Dong and slamming a kick into his back.

“ARGHHH—”

Liu Dong crashed to the ground, his already broken wrist hitting the floor again, sending another wave of pain through his body. But before he could even scream, a heavy military boot stomped down on his throat, cutting off his air supply. His face started turning purple.

“I—I was wrong… Please… spare me… I won’t ever touch your man again… Please… I’ll do anything, just don’t kill me…”

Liu Dong’s voice came out in choked, desperate gasps.

Just from those few moves, he knew—he was no match for this man.

This guy was a monster. His strength was terrifying. Did he awaken his supernatural ability before the apocalypse even started?

Gu Yuanzhao was about to let go but then thought—if he wasn’t here, this bastard would definitely try something against Bai Jing again. That thought alone filled him with murderous intent.

A white energy sword materialized in his hand, humming with lethal energy. He was just about to strike when Bai Jing stopped him.

And taking advantage of the moment, Liu Dong scrambled backward, clutching his mangled wrist as he crawled out of the shooting range in terror.

Yi Fan, who had been standing on the side, was scared stiff.

This guy… was seriously dangerous.

Gu Yuanzhao narrowed his eyes at him, his voice cold as ice. “Scram.”

“Y-Yes! Of course!”

His legs trembled as he turned and ran like his life depended on it. He tripped once, scraping his knee, but he didn’t even dare stop—he just got up and sprinted out of the training ground like a terrified rabbit.

**

After two weeks of training, Bai Jing had gotten the hang of using the energy gun. This type of firearm was easy to learn, simple to operate, and with his sharp eyesight, his accuracy had become nearly flawless.

But their temporary housing contract was about to run out. In just eight days, they would have to pay the rent again.

Their current place cost 20 points per day, which added up to 600 points per month—not exactly cheap.

So, the two of them headed to the mission hall, which had been converted from an old auditorium, to pick up some work.

Most of the tasks on the board fell into three categories—finding missing persons, escorting important figures to the base, or gathering resources. Then, of course, there were zombie-killing missions, ranked by difficulty level, with corresponding rewards.

Every zombie had a crystal core in its brain—an essential resource for enhancing supernatural abilities. These cores were invaluable to ability users.

In addition to the base reward for each kill, turning in the crystal cores would grant extra bonuses.
• Killing a Level-1 zombie: 5 points base reward + 5 points for the core = 10 points total.

• Killing a Level-2 zombie: 20 points base reward + 30 points for the core = 50 points total.

• Killing a Level-3 zombie: 300 points total.

• Killing a Level-4 zombie: 2,000 points total.

• Killing a Level-5 zombie: 15,000 points total.

With rewards like this, it was no wonder ability users were willing to risk their lives for missions.

Bai Jing’s gaze landed on a resource collection mission. It had a three-star difficulty rating, one of the harder missions available.

The task was to search for supplies in a massive underground supermarket in the center of H City.

According to reports, when the apocalypse first broke out, an earthquake had caused the supermarket to collapse, burying countless workers and shoppers alive.

Now, H City was a zombie-infested disaster zone, and with the supermarket hidden underground, it had remained undiscovered. That meant there was a high chance of untouched supplies inside.

The reward for the mission was 2,000 points, and turning in additional supplies could earn them anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 extra points, making it an incredibly lucrative job.

Of course, with high rewards came high risks. H City was a death trap, and the number and level of zombies inside that supermarket were completely unknown.

Gu Yuanzhao noticed Bai Jing looking at the mission. Their eyes met, and they both smiled and told the staff member that they would take it.

The worker looked at them in surprise.

This was one of the most dangerous missions available. The last two teams who went out only had three survivors. One was infected and had to be put down on the spot, while the other two were still in the medical ward with severe injuries.

And these two? They were still on temporary ID cards, meaning they had only been in the base for less than a month. Could they really handle this?

But when the worker saw Gu Yuanzhao’s ability—spatial button with a capacity of 50 cubic meters—their expression shifted. That was exactly the kind of skill they needed for this job.

“Alright, mission approved. You’ll be heading out in two days at 9 AM with another team. Be prepared.”

“Got it. Thanks.”
