Chapter 93.3 Extra 2
Editor: Jodi
There weren’t any advanced tools for testing abilities right now. So for ice or fire users, all they had to do was summon an ice blade or spark a flame, and then their ability would be clear. Space ability users could be verified by storing or retrieving objects. However some abilities—like Bai Jing’s—were much harder to confirm.
However that wasn’t a problem, as every ability user in the base had to complete a set number of missions each month. If someone lied about their ability, it would cost them their life!
Even if they somehow survived, they would be kicked out of the base and left to fend for themselves.
Weighing the pros and cons, most people knew better than to lie.
Bai Jing took the yellow card.
It looked a bit like an employee ID card, with basic personal info printed on it. But it also had the Third Base’s unique emblem, and so was impossible to fake.
There were five card colors in the base.
Ordinary people got white cards, which was the lowest of ranks. Ability users were ranked from lowest to highest: yellow, red, and blue, while the military and researchers had purple cards.
And among the five, blue and purple held the highest authority.
Bai Jing grabbed the base handbook and guide, ready to leave, when Gu Yuanzhao suddenly grabbed his hand. “Ah Jing, wait for me.”
His fingers were even thinner than when he was eighteen, with faint blue veins visible beneath the skin.
“Oh, okay.”
Bai Jing pried his hand away quickly. This kind of closeness felt strange. However even stranger was how his heart started pounding along with it.
He shook his head slightly and turned his attention to the handbook, however his mind had already drifted elsewhere.
“Name?”
“Gu Yuanzhao.”
Gu Yuanzhao? This name sounded really familiar.
Bai Jing thought about it, but no matter how hard he tried, there was no trace of this person in his memories.
“Age?”
“Twenty-seven.”
Twenty-seven? Eleven years older than he was. Sure enough, he’s an old man.
Bai Jing froze for a second. Old man? Where did that thought even come from?
This person was clearly in his prime, with great physique, good looks, and was full of charm. Plus, he had a space ability. He was probably popular wherever he went.
As that thought crossed his mind, he lowered his eyes slightly. For some reason, he felt a little…. uncomfortable.
“Where are you coming from?”
“A City.” Gu Yuanzhao gave the same answer as Bai Jing.
“How big is your space ability?”
“…Around fifty cubic meters.”
Gu Yuanzhao’s space storage device was top-tier, however he deliberately gave a low number.
“Fifty cubic meters?!”
The two staff members exchanged glances, excitement flashing in their eyes.
This was only the first year of the apocalypse, so most space ability users had around twenty to thirty cubic meters. Fifty was already top-tier.
After finishing the registration, one of the staff cleared his throat. “Space ability users have to hand over half their stored supplies…”
They didn’t know why, but standing in front of this tall, imposing man, they felt an overwhelming pressure, as if they were facing someone of a much higher status. Even their tone became more cautious.
Gu Yuanzhao frowned slightly but eventually pulled out a box of nutrient solutions and a box of water. “That’s all.”
In reality, because Bai Jing preferred natural food, he had an entire storage room filled with fresh ingredients, all preserved with the latest tech. Not to mention, he had dozens of boxes of nutrient solutions. However he wasn’t about to hand those over.
“That’s plenty, that’s plenty.” The staff assured him hurriedly.
They had never seen nutrient solutions like these before, but just from the packaging, they could tell it was high-quality stuff. The research team would definitely want to study it!
Gu Yuanzhao: “Can you give Ah Jing back the stuff in his backpack?”
The staff nodded hurriedly. “Of course! No problem at all.”
Compared to what they just received, the teenager’s supplies were nothing.
The teenager’s backpack became heavy again. Bai Jing glanced at the man and gave him a small smile. “Thank you.”
In that moment, as Gu Yuanzhao looked at the teenager’s gentle smile, his heartbeat suddenly lost its rhythm.
He swore to himself that he would protect this smile forever. Always, always.
