Chapter 53.1
Editor: Jodi
The hospital room fell into a tense silence.
Min Shoubei sized up Lu Xiao from head to toe, his gaze clearly filled with discontent: “You’re Lu Xiao, right? What are you doing next to my son?”
Sir wait a minute! Did you just call me “son”?! Shen Ci was dumbfounded.
Faced with this big shot, Shen Ci could only open his mouth carefully: “Uh, Director Min… Is there some kind of misunderstanding?”
Hearing this, Min Shoubei turned his gaze toward him, his expression arrogant: “There’s no mistake. You look exactly like your mother.”
The hurried sound of footsteps outside the hospital room grew clearer, then another person rushed in, so hurried that they forgot to even knock on the door.
“…Sister Min Song?” Shen Ci was stunned.
Min Song had rushed over, so her face was flushed. She took a few deep breaths to steady her breathing: “Xiao Ci… Sorry, I couldn’t stop Dad. Did he scare you?”
Then ignoring the sharp, thorny look Min Shoubei was throwing at her, she patted his shoulder calmly, signaling her father to move aside, then she walked over to Lu Xiao: “President Lu, let’s sit down and talk this through properly.”
Lu Xiao had been silent the whole time, his protective stance over Shen Ci unchanged. His deep eyes stared at Min Shoubei and his daughter, filled with a turbulent darkness that was impossible to decipher.
“Alright.”
Shen Ci huddled at the head of the bed, hugging his knees, trembling in sync with the ticking of the IV drip.
They had said to “sit down and talk properly”, but the three people in front of him were showing their most serious, intimidating expressions, as if they were deciding whether to press the “destroy the Earth” button.
The topic was clearly centered on him and the mystery of his background, yet the atmosphere was so heavy that he didn’t dare to speak.
Shen Ci: ….. This total rookie feels out of place because I’m not a big shot like you guys.jpg
Lu Xiao glanced at the IV connected to him, then shifted his gaze back, saying calmly: “Show me the evidence first.”
Min Shoubei let out an incredulous snort as if he had heard a joke: “I need proof to identify my own son? Doesn’t he look like me?”
Min Shoubei: European-style double eyelids, a tall and prominent nose, sharp and well-defined features, 189 cm tall.
Shen Ci: Inner double eyelids, deer-like eyes, a small and delicate nose, soft and refined features, 173 cm tall.
Everyone: “…”
Feeling a little embarrassed, Min Song interjected gently: “….Dad, your genes show more clearly in me.”
“Tsk, forget it.” Min Shoubei turned to stare intently at Shen Ci, his voice dropping seriously: “In any case, Xiao Bao looks exactly like your mother, especially the eyes…”
His voice grew quieter as if he was lost in memory. After a moment, he spoke again, self-mocking: “It’s been almost twenty years. I’d already forgotten what she looked like. But the moment I saw Xiao Bao, everything came rushing back.”
Then not finishing his sentence, he suddenly put his sunglasses back on, returning to his usual cold, aloof demeanor, as if no one in the world mattered to him.
Shen Ci only had a moment to glimpse the pain in his eyes before the dark lenses blocked his view.
Was he really his biological father?
In the original plot of the novel from the dream, the plot was told from Bai Ziwei’s perspective, and he, Shen Ci, as the cannon fodder, didn’t even get any more plot lines after his exit, so naturally, there was no part about being found by his biological parents.
He had long regarded the Shen family as his real family and had given up on searching for his biological parents, but with Min Shoubei suddenly appearing now, he felt a bit lost.
He had once been bored and so had looked up the overly powerful Min family father and daughter online.
It was said online that Min Shoubei had lived in M Country for a long time, and that his wife had died in C Country twenty years ago due to a plane crash. However there had been no mention of a missing young son.
Maybe it was because the internet wasn’t so developed back then, and because Min Shoubei had still been unknown that there weren’t any pictures of his wife circulating online.
“What I want to know is.” Lu Xiao suddenly looked at Min Song, his deep, dark eyes filled with curiosity, “why didn’t you recognize him?”
Shen Ci also looked at her in confusion, wanting to ask the same question.
If Min Shoubei said he looked like Mrs. Min, then Min Song, as her daughter, should have recognized him the moment she saw him.
Min Song’s expression remained calm, as if she had anticipated being questioned: “I don’t remember what Mom looked like.”
Shen Ci: “Huh?”
She took a deep breath: “I had just started forming memories when Mom passed away. Later, Dad burned all the photos, so……. I really can’t remember. I’m very sorry.”
Shen Ci couldn’t help but look at Min Shoubei. His lips were tightly pressed together, indifferent.
Why would someone burn the photos of a loved one? He really wanted to ask, but after some hesitation, he stayed quiet.
Maybe there was some painful reason behind it— he didn’t want to reopen Min Shoubei’s wounds.
Min Song: “So I’m not sure about Xiao Ci’s identity either. It’s best to do a test.”
“Right.”
Min Shoubei, as if a paused video had suddenly been resumed, began making phone calls to his connections in the relevant field, and Lu Xiao did the same.
Shen Ci tugged at Lu Xiao’s sleeve nervously, looking up at him with big, puppy-like eyes: “Little Uncle, Director Min is already making the arrangements, so let’s just….”
If he had to do two tests, wouldn’t that mean two blood draws? He shivered at the thought. This was a blood calamity!
Reaching out, Lu Xiao stroked his chestnut hair, his voice much gentler than it had been just now: “We’re just going to compare the results together. Otherwise, I won’t feel at ease.”
He had investigated Shen Ci’s background many times before and had even spoken to Shen Bie who had found him, however they had never found anything conclusive.
So Min Shoubei’s sudden appearance and his obvious obsession with Shen Ci left him feeling uneasy.
However when he looked down at the soft, helpless Shen Ci, his mood improved considerably.
Shen Ci, faced with such a big life event, looked confused and overwhelmed, however he still looked completely reliant on him.
This unconditional trust made his heart melt, and he felt very content. If it wasn’t that there were so many people around, he would’ve really wanted to pull his baby onto his lap, then kiss him, and hold him close for a while.
Lowering his head, he coaxed gently: “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of everything. Baby, get some rest.”
Then after saying this, he couldn’t resist kissing his forehead.
A sudden loud bang however startled Shen Ci so much that he almost jumped, and he instinctively reached out to hug Lu Xiao tightly.
Min Shoubei hadn’t even hung up yet when he slammed his fist on the table, nearly knocking a water glass off in the process.
He roared furiously: “Take your dirty mouth off him!”
Shen Ci: “???”
Shen Ci didn’t know where to start scolding from for a moment, his mind racing with thoughts.
His first reaction: What the heck, isn’t it just a kiss! How dare he shout at and insult my super nice Little Uncle? I want to beat him up!
His second reaction: Wait a minute, he seems to be my biological father…. and he looks pretty scary!
His final reaction: QAQ, forget it, I don’t dare say anything…..
