Chapter 49.1

Waking up to the sound of a rooster’s crow, was a first for Tang Zhou.
The sun shone on the snow, reflecting a dazzling light that flickered mischievously on Tang Zhou’s eyelids through the gaps in the window.
The bed was warm like spring, however the moment he stretched out his hand, he felt a biting chill, making him unwilling to get up.
There was no one in the room, and the courtyard was silent.
Tang Zhou lingered on the heated bed for a while, then forced himself up with difficulty to get dressed.
However just as his feet touched the ground, there was a noise in the courtyard. He pulled the curtain back, walked out of the inner room, then coincidentally run into Fu Shen who had just entered.
And the moment their eyes met, the cold air suddenly felt thick and heavy.
Fu Shen put what he was holding down and strode over, “Why not sleep a little longer?”
“Didn’t you say last night that we’d make dumplings together today?” Tang Zhou’s eyes fell on the bags he was carrying.
His gaze softening, Fu Shen pulled Tang Zhou into his arms in a natural manner, lowering his head to kiss him.
But Tang Zhou raised a hand to block his mouth, “I haven’t brushed my teeth yet.”
Fu Shen looked at him quietly, then planted several light kisses on his palm before letting go.
Then he fetched hot water for Tang Zhou himself, squeezed out some toothpaste, then while Tang Zhou brushed his teeth, prepared the water for washing his face and poured a cup of hot water, letting it sit to cool a little.
The service was exceedingly attentive.
After Tang Zhou finished washing up, he drank a few sips of hot water to warm his stomach and felt refreshed. “What did you bring back just now?”
“I went out to buy some New Year’s goods.” Fu Shen replied, placing a kiss on his moistened lips, “What do you want to eat this morning?”
Tang Zhou wasn’t picky, “I’ll eat whatever you make.”
**
Tang Zhou found the farmhouse stove fascinating as he helped Fu Shen make breakfast. He fiddled with it a bit but almost put out the fire, then he looked at Fu Shen innocently.
Fu Shen couldn’t bear to scold him— in fact, he found Tang Zhou even more adorable like this.
It was when breakfast was finally served that Tang Zhou had the heart to take a good look around the room.
The house looked quite old, and even the dining table was full of historical wear and tear.
And looking out through the door, he could see the rolling hills not far away.
Recalling the memories from yesterday, he realized that Fu Shen’s home was a bit further from the other houses in the village, standing alone in its isolation.
Curious, he asked, “I noticed that the other houses in the village are clustered quite closely, but why aren’t there any neighbors around your place?”
Fu Shen paused for a moment, then replied calmly, “My mom had me out of wedlock. My grandpa didn’t want her hearing others gossip, so we moved a bit farther away.”
Tang Zhou felt a pang of sourness in his heart.
Even though they had moved far, they were still in the same village. He couldn’t imagine how many hurtful comments Fu Shen must have heard as a child.
Maybe those people didn’t mean any harm, but words that were said without thought could still cut deeply, leaving an indelible mark on the young Fu Shen’s heart.
He changed the subject hurriedly, “Are we putting up spring couplets today? Let’s do it together after we eat!”
Fu Shen’s lips curled into a smile, “I need to go up the mountain to visit the graves after breakfast, so you just stay here and wait for me.”
“I’ll go with you!” Tang Zhou said immediately.
“It just snowed, so the mountain paths aren’t easy to walk.” Fu Shen didn’t want him to have to endure that hardship.
But Tang Zhou replied seriously, “I want to meet them.”
He had practically stolen someone else’s grandson and son—he ought to pay his respects to their elders.
Fu Shen’s hand that was holding the chopsticks trembled slightly, “Alright, we’ll go together.”
*
The snow had just cleared, revealing the majestic beauty of the mountains.
Fu Shen led Tang Zhou along the winding mountain path toward the cemetery.
The winter mountains were covered in snow, with occasional patches of green pine poking through, adding a lively and cute touch.
Tang Zhou took a deep breath, then praised, “The air here is really fresh.”
No matter how beautiful the villas in the city were, the air there could never compare to the freshness here.
Fu Shen held his hand firmly, “Maybe in a few years, it won’t be this good.”
Everywhere else was being developed, so this gem that was Longtan Village would eventually be noticed.
Longxin Real Estate had once planned to build a resort here. Them annoying Tang Zhou’s “lover” was just a bonus on the side.
However unfortunately, Longxin no longer existed.
Not long after, Tang Zhou saw two tombstones. One was marked “Fu Guang” and the other “Fu Junlan”.
Judging by the names, Fu Guang was Fu Shen’s grandfather, and Fu Junlan was Fu Shen’s mother, who had passed away early.
So, the “Lan” in “Deep Blue” must have come from his mother’s name.
Fu Shen looked at the tombstones with a faint smile, not showing any sadness.
“I came to see you.” He told them, holding Tang Zhou’s hand tightly, “With my lover in tow as well.”
Tang Zhou felt a bit shy. “Hello, Grandpa Fu, Auntie Fu.”
Fu Shen smiled, then like a child showing off in front of an adult, he said, “Isn’t he great? You guys will definitely really like him.”
Tang Zhou joined in, “Fu Shen is doing really well now. He has great grades in school, has earned scholarships, even won first place in a competition, and has started a company. He’s really amazing.”
Amused by his words, Fu Shen laughed, his low chuckle falling softly into Tang Zhou’s heart, both light and heavy at the same time.
It was hard for Tang Zhou to imagine how Fu Shen had endured all those years alone, but now he knew for sure that Fu Shen would never be alone again.
“Fu Shen, let’s get married when you graduate.”
Tang Zhou’s calm, clear voice echoed quietly in the silent mountains.
However it was like thunder on a clear day, exploding in Fu Shen’s ears.
He was so stunned that he couldn’t speak for a while, only reacting after a long pause. “Baby, what did you just say?”
Tang Zhou smiled as he looked at him.
“Let’s get married when you graduate, okay?”
He wanted to spend the rest of his life with Fu Shen.
Fu Shen stared at him in a daze, his amber eyes glimmering in the sunlight, as if they were reflecting tears, but those tears flickered briefly and then disappeared, so fast that it was almost impossible to catch.
He suddenly pulled Tang Zhou into a tight hug, burying his face in Tang Zhou’s neck. After a long while, his voice came out hoarse, “I really want to graduate soon.”
He even thought to himself that he could probably finish his credits early and get his diploma ahead of schedule.
