Chapter 22.2

Editor: Jodi

The resident was a solitary elderly lady.

“Grandma Chen, Lu Peng got confused from the burn of the fever, so I’ve brought the stuff over.” Xu Ling placed the bag on the table.

“Thank you both.” Grandma Chen was sitting in the sunlight, threading a needle as she squinted, but she tried several times without success.

Ning Sheng sat on a long bench and helped her thread it.

“What a beautiful little friend.” Grandma Chen said, “Did you come from the city?”

Ning Sheng: “En? You can tell?”

“You’re better behaved than they are.” Grandma Chen said with a smile, “Little Bell, the orange juice on the table is for you and your friend.”

Ning Sheng: “You know nothing about me.”

I’m currently running away from home, a grand feat that even Xu Ling hasn’t attempted.

The orange juice was a bagged soda from the convenience store, something Ning Sheng usually disliked, as he found the act of biting open the bag and drinking very unseemly.

But today, he accepted it without a word because Grandma Chen was the one who gave it to him.

The breeze at the village entrance was cool, and Grandma Chen, afraid that he might get hot, fanned him with a palm-leaf fan.

This soda was quite tasty. No wonder Lu Peng and the others like it so much.

Grandma Chen loved having children around as she lived alone, so she gave them with lots of snacks.

“Should we go?” Xu Ling asked him after a while.

Ning Sheng shook his head.

“What’s wrong?” Xu Ling asked him.

Ning Sheng: “If I get caught today, this would be the last time I see you.”

Xu Ling: “……”

“Little Bell, hide me.” Ning Sheng said.

I’m still counting on you to make it big, if I leave now, all would be for naught.

“Okay.” Xu Ling responded.

Ning Sheng: “Where will you hide me?”

The little devil king unexpectedly pulled him into his arms: “Wait till I grow up a bit more.”

“Are you sick!” Ning Sheng’s head bumped into Xu Ling’s chest, messing his hair up, his face flushing with anger again.

Counting on others wasn’t as reliable as counting on oneself.

If anyone tried to take him back to S City today, he’d roll from the east to the west of the town, and he meant what he said.

His children’s phone rang.

“En? Grandma?” He answered the call.

“Did you grow wings or do you have grease under your feet? I just turned around and you’re gone?” His grandmother asked.

“I grew wings.” Ning Sheng said.

“Little ancestor, stop your teasing.” His grandmother started, “Let me tell you what your parents are thinking.”

Then she continued, “They, still, hope you would study in S City.”

With a bang, Xu Ling burst a soda.

Ning Sheng: “? ah ah ah don’t splash it on my hands.”

“You’re with Xu Ling?” His grandmother asked him.

Ning Sheng: “En.”

“You two might as well be tied together.” His grandmother said, then continued in a not so good tone, “Let me continue, but Grandma doesn’t want you to leave. All these years, how you’ve been, Grandma has seen it all in her heart. Grandma doesn’t want any Ning family heir, I just want you to grow up safely.”

Ning Sheng was stunned for a moment.

These words, long, long ago, it wasn’t that his grandmother hadn’t said them to him, it was just that the listener had had no intention of listening, so he had missed a lot of what it had meant.

“Grandma is also getting older, and is also afraid of the quiet. I can raise you, so I’ll do it.” His grandmother told him.

Ning Sheng blinked, his eyelashes slightly wet.

He hummed softly in agreement.

“Go and play.” Then his grandmother added, “don’t run away from home anymore.”

Ning Sheng: “……”

Good, very good, his stay in Qing’an Town had been extended.

“What are you hugging me for!” He suddenly asked, “It’s so hot, let go.”

When had Xu Ling gotten so close, he couldn’t even move him. It couldn’t be that he couldn’t bear to let him go, right?

Xu Ling was proficient in French and violin; it was time to develop some new skills for the little devil king.

“Are we going to find Lu Peng to play?” Xu Ling asked.

“We’re going to practice the piano.” Ning Sheng told him, “Next week, we are going to take a proficiency test!”

Xu Ling: “……”

“I’ll grow up soon.” Xu Ling told Ning Sheng.

Ning Sheng: “?”

“No matter how big you grow, you still have to practice piano.” Ning Sheng told Xu Ling mercilessly.

**

Reeds by the pond swayed in the wind, facing the sunlight.

The rainy season came and went, marking the passage of time twice over.

A temple fair was bustling in Qing’an Town, with crowds everywhere as well as lights and decorations.

“Thief! Catch the thief!” Someone suddenly screamed.

The orderly crowd became chaotic, creating waves of disturbance.

“200 meters to the east, then turn. He’s taken off his jacket and is now wearing a dark blue T-shirt.”

“Xu Ling go west, yes, hurry, jump over the cart, watch out for Grandma Chen, don’t bump into her.”

“Got it.” Xu Ling’s voice sounded in the group voice chat briefly.

“This guy runs really fast.” Lu Peng also added in the group voice chat.

Xu Ling made his way through the crowd, meeting up with Lu Peng.

“That’s him, he looks like an unemployed youth, the scrap of society.” Li Haoyue, who was standing on the rooftop added, “Command over.”

Xu Ling and Lu Peng rushed forward, pinning the person in the blue T-shirt at the alley’s entrance.

“Don’t sit on him to death.” Xu Ling warned.

Lu Peng: “Then I’ll do it halfway.”

“You guys are so slow.” Someone complained unhappily.

The thief who was pinned down struggled to look up, and by the high flowerbed, saw a leaning twelve or thirteen-year-old small teenager.

He was just leaning against the flowerbed casually, his pale fingers holding a bag of cookies, his hands slender, nails neatly rounded and polished, knuckles clean and faintly pink.

Ning Sheng, draped in an oversized City Experimental Junior High School jacket straightened up from the flowerbed edge, stuffed a piece of cookie into Xu Ling’s mouth, then tossed the rest to Lu Peng.

Then standing in front of the thief, he leaned forward slightly, lips pressed together in a thin line, his amber eyes filled with proud disdain—

“Dare to steal Auntie Xu’s wallet, are you looking for trouble?”
