Chapter 17.2

S City, Children’s Hospital.

Ning Sheng, with a stoic expression, was wheeled around various departments for health examinations.

“Just one more test and we’re done.” The housekeeper told him, “Little young master, hang in there a little longer.”

Ning Sheng: “What’s left?”

“Just height and weight.” The housekeeper replied.

After the check-up, Ning Sheng, looking at his preliminary medical report, was angry.

He had been drinking milk every day diligently, so why hadn’t he grown taller, especially when Xu Ling had grown so much?

“Wait here for me, I’ll go and get a copy of the rehabilitation plan.” The housekeeper said.

“Go ahead.” Ning Sheng nodded slightly.

Then getting bored while waiting, he happened to overhear a conversation nearby.

“Seriously, working overtime during a holiday, so annoying.” The person continued, “Taking the boss’s son for a medical check-up.”

Ning Sheng: “…..”

Tsk, another young master who had come for a check-up.

City kids were too delicate, all wastes. In Qing’an Town, those bunch of cubs ran wild in the hills all day, but he had hardly seen any of them fall sick.

He glanced sideways disdainfully, only to lock eyes with Xu Ling who was pressing a cotton swab against his arm.

Ning Sheng: “?”

Xu Ling: “?”

“Hurry up.” The person with Xu Ling shoved him forward.

“It’s still bleeding, keep pressure on it properly.” Ning Sheng grabbed Xu Ling’s arm, helping him press the cotton ball over the spot where blood had been drawn.

He remembered, Xu Ling’s father’s company was in S City, although it was a small one compared to his family’s business.

“We’re short on time.” The person with Xu Ling urged, “Let’s go.”

“You’re indeed short on time, short on time to get your blind eyes checked.” Ning Sheng retorted, “Is this how you take care of him? Can’t you see his arm is still bleeding?”

“Who… who are you?” The person had never seen such a haughty child before and after looking at what Ning Sheng was wearing and his temperament, didn’t dare offend him.

“Me?” Ning Sheng thought about it, then felt his cheeks heat up when the word ‘friend’ almost slipped out.

“I’m his master.” He answered.

Xu Ling: “……?”

The person who had brought Xu Ling: “?”

That’s right. Ning Sheng thought proudly.

This is the little devil king I’m raising painstakingly, feeding him blueberries one by one. He has to be mine.

“You wait over there.” He ordered out of habit. “Or maybe his dad should consider getting a new assistant.”

“Why is it still bleeding?” Ning Sheng, removing the cotton swab from Xu Ling’s hand was confused.

“Ning Ning.” Xu Ling said, “Let go of my arm, you’re squeezing the wound.”

Ning Sheng: “……”

He was embarrassed.

The two boys chatted at the entrance of the medical center.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming to S City?” Ning Sheng asked Xu Ling.

Xu Ling: “I asked my dad to tell you yesterday.”

Ning Sheng: “?”

Where was that mentioned?

He checked his text messages.

A message from a contact named ‘The little devil king’s keeper’ read:
[The holiday is near!!! Big discounts on car washes, get one free after 10 washes. New car film sticking services in the store.]

Ning Sheng, “Where in this message does it mention you?”

Xu Ling: “…..”

“Uncle must be really busy.” Ning Sheng said to him, “Your family’s business seems to be doing well lately.”

“Do you like living in S City?” Ning Sheng asked.

“Little Young Master Ning.” The housekeeper walked out, “It’s time for us to go back.”

“Got it.” Ning Sheng replied.

Then after thinking for a moment, he shoved his children’s mobile phone at Xu Ling.

“Don’t play games.” He instructed, “And if I call, you have to answer.”

“If you don’t, I’ll feed you ten boxes of blueberries.” Ning Sheng told him.

Then satisfied with his threat, he left contentedly.

Ning Sheng didn’t know if Xu Ling was comfortable living in S City, but he himself was a bit uneasy.

There were no tasty street foods to eat, no shrimp fishing to enjoy, it was completely boring.

After staying with his parents for two days, he couldn’t stand it any longer, and smashed a bowl, saying he wanted to return to Qing’an Town.

The housekeeper from S City was stunned.

Since getting injured, the little young master’s personality had become somewhat melancholic.

He rarely spoke and relied heavily on his parents.

And at first, when he was sent to Qing’an Town to recuperate, he called home every day to say that he wanted to come back.

However over the past two years, he hadn’t mentioned it even once.

Ning Sheng borrowed the housekeeper’s phone to text the little devil king.

Ning Sheng: What are you doing?

Xu Ling replied: Eating fried chicken.

In the afternoon, Ning Sheng asked: What are you doing now?

Xu Ling replied: Buying clothes.

In the evening, Ning Sheng asked: What are you doing?

Xu Ling replied: Watching a movie.

Ning Sheng replied: Scram!

Then he smashed another bowl.

This kid seems to be enjoying himself.

But it was also true, with so many fun things to do in S City, how could Xu Ling not like it here?

The more Xu Ling enjoyed himself, the more likely he would forget that there was a Ning Sheng in this world.

“Little Young Master.” The housekeeper couldn’t hold back anymore and knocked on the door, “Madam has instructed me to take you to the mall to buy some clothes.”

Ning Sheng: “Oh.”

Fine, he would buy some clothes, and pick some out for Xu Ling too.

After all, Xu Ling was going to be a person of importance in the future, so he had to look good with lavish care.

The mall, located in the center of the city, housed many luxury brands, and the basement level featured a children’s playground, complete with a sizable ball pit, reminiscent of an ocean.

This reminded Ning Sheng of the trampoline Xu Ling had taken him to play on. Trampolines weren’t common in their town, so he hadn’t had a chance to jump on one a second time.

“Little Young Master, do you want to play?” The housekeeper asked.

“How is that possible?” Ning Sheng responded, “Such childish things…”

Mid-sentence, he saw Xu Ling.

Xu Ling was surrounded by a group of slightly older kids who pushed him towards the edge of the ball pit.

Ning Sheng: “Buy me a ticket, I want to play.”

Xu Ling was having too much fun, even gaining new little followers.

“Xu….” Ning Sheng barely started to call out.

When suddenly, a plastic ball soared through the air, striking Xu Ling on the head.

Ning Sheng: “?”

“You don’t think Dad would want you, do you?” An older child spoke, “He only has me as a son. Your mom and he are already divorced.”

“Yeah, go back to your village.” Another little school kid standing next to him chimed in, “Uncle Tang doesn’t even like you.”

“If he doesn’t like me, then why are you so anxious?” Xu Ling retorted, weighing a plastic ball in his hand.

“You!” The other child became even more agitated.

“If you weren’t so pathetic, he wouldn’t even remember he had a son with his ex-wife.” Xu Ling shot back.

Unable to outtalk Xu Ling, the child shouted, “Hit him!”

Xu Ling, with his back to the ball pit, remained calm, “Yes, hurry up and hit me. It’ll be just in time to show our dad.”

The balls didn’t come flying. Instead, a person did.

Ning Sheng had mentally rehearsed walking upright several times, only to stagger a few steps before he plunged into the ball pit, his hand on Xu Ling’s neck, then his gold bracelet clanged against Xu Ling’s head.

“Don’t you dare bully him!” Ning Sheng turned around to say this, then, feeling he shouldn’t be too kind to the little devil king, added, “Even when hitting a dog, you should consider its owner.”

Xu Ling: “……”

Xu Ling: “Hiss…”

Hearing the commotion, several parents hurried over.

Ning Sheng was fished back into his wheelchair by the housekeeper, clutching Xu Ling’s wrist tightly and refusing to let go.

“Who told you to hit him?” Xu Ling’s father scolded his other son, pointing at the bump on Xu Ling’s forehead, “Didn’t I tell you to play together?”

“Wuwuwu, I didn’t hit him.” Xu Ling’s half-brother cried, “I didn’t even get a chance to.”

“What to do? It seems like I’m the one who hit him…” Ning Sheng felt a bit guilty as he touched his bracelet.

The gold bracelet was bent out of shape, and his wrist ached a little.

Actually, there were many ways he could have stopped the children’s squabble, but he chose the most foolish and painful one.

All because, in that instant, he thought Little Bell might feel hurt.

He had just wanted to hug him, feeling as if he could understand Xu Ling at that moment.

He wanted to stand by Xu Ling’s side.

S City wasn’t fun at all. Why didn’t Xu Ling tell him?

Squatting beside his wheelchair, Xu Ling grabbed his hand and adjusted the bracelet so that ghe bent part faced inward, then hid it with his sleeve.

Ning Sheng froze, and Xu Ling looked up at him, signaling for him to keep quiet.

“I didn’t mean to hit you.” Ning Sheng told him, “I wouldn’t have hit your head, it would hurt my hand.”

Xu Ling: “……”

“I’m not like them, you know that right?” Ning Sheng asked him.

“I know.” Xu Ling replied, “You have a dog, they don’t.”

“Dummy! Who asked you to say this…..” Ning Sheng whispered softly, “Forget it, let’s just go back to Qing’an Town.”

“Okay, dummy.” Xu Ling said.
