One minute later, Xu Ling let go.

The senior, having used too much force, fell backward onto the ground.

Xu Ling: “So-rry-a-bout-that.”

The senior: “…”

This guy was so fierce, even his apology came out through gritted teeth.

Clutching his sore backside, the senior limped away.

Under the tree shade, Ning Sheng sat on Xu Ling’s suitcase listening to music when a gentle breeze stirred. Xu Ling pressed a cold cantaloupe milk into his hands and pushed him along with the suitcase.

Xu Ling: “Look, what a big bird’s nest.”

Ning Sheng looked up, brushing past the searching senior.

Ning Sheng opened a package of strawberry cheese cookies, tried one, found it decent, and began feeding them piece by piece to Xu Ling as a reward for the cantaloupe milk.

“Don’t bite my fingers.” Ning Sheng warned him.

“It’s choking.” Xu Ling told him. “Let me have a sip of that cantaloupe milk.”

Xu Ling gulped down half the bottle with loud slurping sounds, leaving Ning Sheng unable to even smile.

“I ran around for ages, give me some reward.” Xu Ling handed back the remaining half bottle.

Ning Sheng couldn’t drink too much cold liquid anyway, so it worked out that Xu Ling helped finish some.

“I wasn’t completely idle either.” Ning Sheng told him. “I picked up both our student IDs. It was exhausting work.”

Xu Ling glanced at the student ID pickup point three meters away: “…Amazing.”

Ning Sheng held up his student ID for Xu Ling to see: “The photo Auntie Xu took with her phone came out really good.”

Xu Ling glanced over. It did look good, but then again, beautiful people looked good no matter how you photographed them.

“Mine looks good too.” Xu Ling slapped his student ID in front of Ning Sheng’s face. “Take a look.”

The force was a bit much, because it smacked Ning Sheng in the face.

The impact made Ning Sheng step back.

“I’ll kill you.” Ning Sheng said fiercely.

“I miss Auntie Xu.” He added.

After mixing with these primitive people in Qing’an Town for so long, returning suddenly to civilized society left him feeling rather out of place.

“You miss sugar cakes, right?” Xu Ling understood completely.

Xu Ling’s expression softened: “When we find time, I’ll make some for you.”

The university campus was freer than high school. Couples holding hands could be seen everywhere along the way.

Ning Sheng turned his head in disdain, only to discover Xu Ling gripping his hand even tighter.

Somehow, something had gone wrong somewhere. Xu Ling hung on him like a large pendant, following wherever he went.

The maths nerd and Lu Peng weren’t like this.

He tried ducking out from under Xu Ling’s arm to walk independently, but within half a minute, Xu Ling had reached over and pulled him back.

Ning Sheng gave up.

Their dorm was on the first floor, a double room Ning Sheng had paid extra to select.

But Ning Sheng didn’t plan to stay here much, only to store things.

After all, Grandma had bought him a small house near the school.

“My back hurts so much.” Ning Sheng hated traveling far. “Give me a massage.”

“Coming right up.” Xu Ling was putting books on the shelf. “Let me wash my hands.”

Ning Sheng had already sprawled face-down on the bed Xu Ling had made up, with sheets Xu Ling had brought from home, freshly washed and carrying the clean scent of soap.

“I made money. This is for you.” Xu Ling told him. “It’s big gold.”

Xu Ling pried open the bracelet’s clasp, grabbed his ankle, and clicked it shut.

Xu Ling: “It looks great.”

Ning Sheng knew this guy had made quite a sum over the summer helping expand the family car business, modifying and repairing vehicles, but he hadn’t known Xu Ling had bought him a present.

Though the thing was admittedly uncomfortably heavy, Ning Sheng felt touched.

His dog had grown up and had learned to give presents. He used to give giant mantises, now he was giving big gold, and in the future could give other big things.

It was just that this aesthetic sense was really problematic. It was way too thick.

All those years of teaching hadn’t managed to correct Xu Ling’s taste.

“It’s too heavy.” Ning Sheng shook his leg. “I’m not wearing it. Take it off.”

The cool metal lay against his pale ankle. The bracelet was bought too large and hung loose, swaying and making his slender calf look even more lustrous and beautiful.

This country dog just loves gold. He wants to buy piles of it, loop up his princess’s hands, feet, and neck, and put a gold crown on his head, weighing him down until he can’t walk.

Xu Ling thought to himself.

“Does it hurt?” Xu Ling sat on the bed edge, pressing both hands against Ning Sheng’s waist.

“Taking the bus plus catching the flight, I’m dead tired.” Ning Sheng buried his face in the pillow, his voice muffled. “I should’ve taken my little plane, but Dad commandeered it.”

He complained when he bought it, but then said it was great once he used it.

“I’ll buy you one in the future.” Xu Ling said. “An even prettier one.”

The old demon king might have been able to, but the current demon king was questionable.

Ning Sheng had no demands of Xu Ling. Xu Ling grinning carelessly every day was quite nice too.
