Chapter 27.1

Editor: Jodi

The east side of Qing’an Town, Fang Hua’s house.

A little girl with twin ponytails was sitting on a long bench, munching on an apple.

“Big brother, there’s not even meat in our dinner tonight.” The girl said. “Are Mom and Dad bankrupt?”

“With the little money they have, they don’t deserve to say they’re bankrupt.” Fang Hua, who was fixing the water pipes, told her. “We can only say we’re a bit poorer today.”

“Whose family deserves to say it then?” She asked him.

“At least someone like them.” Fang Hua raised his hand, pointing at a Maybach squeezing through the small road by their door.

Then the Maybach’s window rolled down, revealing Ning Sheng’s weary face.

Fang Hua: “Hey, you…”

“You what ‘you’? Why are you still standing there? Come and get your meat!” Ning Sheng ordered.

Fang Hua: “Oh, right, coming!”

The trunk opened, and Lu Peng pulled out a knife from a bag and sliced into a piece of pork. “How much did your family order?”

“Three jin.” Li Haoyue said, carrying a handmade scale. “Put it on here so I can check.”

The math nerd adjusted the weights and scales expertly. “Three jin. Check it out, not a gram more or less.”

Fang Hua glanced over and nodded.

Then Xu Ling pulled a black plastic bag from his backpack, packed the pork in an expert manner, then tossed it to Fang Hua.

Li Haoyue called out the price, collected the money, and gave him the change in a swift manner.

“See you next time.” Ning Sheng yawned.

Fang Hua: “Ning Sheng, tomorrow let’s play baske…”

“Next house.” Xu Ling snapped his fingers.

The car drove off with a swoosh.

Fang Hua who was left standing there: “…tball?”

Fang Hua: “…”

“Can we switch tasks?” Lu Peng asked in the car. “When Princess said ‘see you next time’, it sounded like ‘you can scram now’.”

“Do you think he can cut the pork or lift that scale?” Xu Ling asked in reply.

Lu Peng: “Uh…”

“Fine, we’ll switch.” Ning Sheng said fiercely.

Next house.

Xu Ling cut the meat, and Lu Peng bagged it.

And Ning Sheng, holding the handmade scale, adjusted the weights the way Li Haoyue had taught him to.

Ning Sheng: “Uh… En? Oh… the result is… it’s free.”

Lu Peng: “What the hell?”

Xu Ling: “???”

“Free?” The customer’s eyes lit up. “I’ll definitely come back next time!”

However panicking, Li Haoyue jumped up on the spot: “Retract that! Let me say it! Those are my lines!”

“Free? You must be dreaming!” Xu Ling and Lu Peng roared in unison.

“That’s not how you use it.” The math nerd gestured and taught Ning Sheng how to use the scale. “It can’t be tilted, it has to be balanced on both ends.”

Ning Sheng: “Got it.”

Xu Ling watched for a moment, then put his arm around Ning Sheng’s shoulder, standing casually: “Be good, let the math nerd do it. You were almost about to sell this pork at the price of gold.”

Ning Sheng: “……”

The Maybach was useful and much faster than a bicycle, because within an hour, all of Lu Peng’s orders for the day had been delivered.

**

At the car wash in front of Xu Ling’s house, Xu Ling, holding a high-pressure water gun, sprayed Ning Sheng’s Maybach.

And Lu Peng, holding a wet cloth, wiped the car seats carefully.

While Ning Sheng squatted by the sink, washing his hands repeatedly.

“It won’t come off.” Ning Sheng broke down.

“The third bottle from the top of the sink is dish soap. Use that to wash.” Xu Ling called out.

Ning Sheng: “The third bottle… Dog Xu, this smells like facial toner?”

Xu Ling: “Stop! Don’t pour anymore!”

Xu Ling ran over.

Lu Peng: “Ha ha ha, Auntie Xu’s precious facial toner is gone.”

“The third bottle from the left.” Xu Ling picked up a small transparent bottle and squeezed some into Ning Sheng’s palm. “Why did you start counting from the right?”

Ning Sheng: “I’ll count from wherever I want to count from.”

Ning Sheng’s fair hand was stained with a large patch of black bicycle chain oil, with several more smudges on his wrist.

Throughout the trip, he had been rubbing it with wet wipes, making it so that his wrist was red with even a few red spots on it, however he was still not able to clean the stains.

“My hand has never been this hard to clean.” Ning Sheng said sadly.

“It will be fine after I scrub it a bit more.” Xu Ling said as he held his hand and rubbed vigorously.

Then the water washed the stains on Ning Sheng’s hand away slowly, causing his mood to improve as well.

The little devil king used to write his name on Ning Sheng’s hand, and whenever Ning Sheng got upset, he would help him wash his hands like this.

“Now wash it again with soap.” Xu Ling told him. “Then it will smell nice and won’t have the dish soap scent.”

Ning Sheng: “En!”

“You guys are so good at washing cars and hands!” For once, he didn’t hesitate to give praise.

Xu Ling: “……”

“Why don’t you have uncle expand into a foot spa!” Lu Peng teased. “After all, it’s all washing.”

“Go sell your piglets.” Xu Ling kicked him. “All your pigs have been delivered, so why aren’t you gone yet? You still want to freeload dinner?”

“There’s no dinner?” Lu Peng was shocked.

Xu Ling: “You want me to feed you? Who’s working for whom?”

Ning Sheng: “What about me?”

“You’ll get dinner. Once I finish washing your car, we’ll eat.” Xu Ling told him in response, then asked, “You didn’t eat at home?”

“I only had milk.” Ning Sheng responded, swinging on a hammock slowly. Qing’an Town’s night sky was quiet, free from light pollution, revealing the Milky Way.

“Why is it all patchy?” Xu Ling’s stepfather walked over, circled twice, then looked disdainfully at Xu Ling’s work.

Xu Ling: “Because I’m not your biological son, I didn’t inherit your skills.”

His stepfather: “Useless, let me wash it. Don’t ruin such a good car.”

So Xu Ling went to repair bicycles.

“Dog Xu.” Ning Sheng called.

Xu Ling: “What do you want to eat?”

“Look at the stars in the sky, why are they shaking?” Ning Sheng asked.

Xu Ling: “……?”

“So hot.” Auntie Xu, noticing that something was wrong, walked over and touched his forehead. “Don’t you know you have a fever? Why did you two still go gallivanting outside?”

“I probably got it from napping on the desk this morning.” Ning Sheng told her. “It’s fine, I catch colds easily. What’s more I’m a bit of a doctor myself.”

Xu Ling: “Then how will you treat it?”

Ning Sheng: “The doctor said I can skip school tomorrow.”

Xu Ling: “……”
