Editor: Princess
The car drove out of the mountains and into the urban district, stopping at the entrance of a residential complex near the school.
When Ning Sheng had just started his second year of high school, his grandmother bought this apartment near the school. He would come here whenever he didn’t want to stay in the dormitory.
Xu Ling pushed several suitcases into the living room while Ning Sheng changed his shoes, turned on the air conditioning, and poured himself a cup of coffee.
Cool air swept in, dispelling the summer heat. Ning Sheng sat down comfortably, then turned around to see—
Three people lying on the carpet in front of the air conditioner vent, rolling around.
Ning Sheng: “Get lost!”
Ning Sheng: “…Stop rolling around!”
I’ve brought primitive people into the city, he thought in despair.
He grabbed the remote control expressionlessly and switched the air conditioner to hot air, employing a strategy of mutual destruction that left everyone dizzy from the heat.
Xu Ling rolled over to Ning Sheng’s feet and tugged at his pant leg.
“Ning Ning, what do you want for dinner?” He asked.
Ning Sheng didn’t respond. He simply tilted his chin up slightly, his gaze slanting downward with cold indifference, a very shallow arc curving at the corners of his lips.
He kicked off his slippers and, wearing white socks, placed his foot on Xu Ling’s shoulder, gently trying to push him away. When that didn’t work, he could only step on Xu Ling’s shoulder a few times.
Li Haoyue started, “You look like that…”
Xu Ling jumped up and stuffed a math book into the maths nerd’s mouth: “I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time. Are you living up to all the sage books you’ve read!”
Ning Sheng: “?”
“I brought bacon and ham.” Lu Peng said. “Should we cook for ourselves?”
“I brought a backpack full of figs.” Li Haoyue said.
“We can.” Xu Ling sat up, one hand supporting himself on the ground, the other resting on his knee, leaning against Ning Sheng’s leg. “I brought a backpack full of eggs.”
Ning Sheng: “….”
These primitive people entering the city had even learned to bring provisions.
“Can’t I afford to feed you guys?” Ning Sheng asked, leaning against the sofa.
“Dog Xu told us to bring them.” Lu Peng confessed immediately. “He said it would let princess taste the flavors of home anytime.”
Ning Sheng: “Ah…”
So that’s how it was.
The living room’s lighting was warm, and outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the oppressive summer evening finally brought a shower.
Because of a spinal injury to his lower back when he was young, whenever it rained, Ning Sheng’s lower back would ache.
He changed from sitting to lying down, then flipped over to lie on his stomach on the sofa, burying his face in the cushion, arching his back and lifting his two pale legs, twisting them this way and that.
Xu Ling stepped out of the kitchen briefly, adjusted the air conditioning to cold air, and when he turned around, he saw little Ning crawling around openly on the sofa.
Xu Ling: “?”
“Does your back hurt?” He asked.
“Come here.” Ning Sheng turned his face to the side, his black hair slightly damp, his eyes a bit dazed as he commanded, “Give this young master a massage.”
Only Xu Ling really knew how to massage, even better than his rehabilitation doctor. Ning Sheng squinted his eyes comfortably.
He lay on his side, the corners of his lips curved slightly as he pinched a piece of salted cheese cracker: “Open your mouth.”
Xu Ling bit the cracker and accidentally licked his hand, his fingertips touching a patch of warm moisture.
Ning Sheng hummed with displeasure and wiped his hand on Xu Ling’s collar.
Xu Ling: “More, more.”
“Dinner’s ready.” Li Haoyue came out carrying plates. “You look like some kind of pug.”
Xu Ling: “….”
“If it weren’t for princess liking the fruit from your house, I would have beaten you long ago.” Xu Ling said.
“Thank you for preserving a rising star for the mathematics world.” The math nerd told him.
Since Xu Ling was called away to massage backs, today’s dinner was prepared by the maths nerd as head chef.
“Such square bacon, such round fried eggs.” Lu Peng was amazed.
Li Haoyue: “Every bite tastes like geometry.”
Xu Ling: “Your geometry… has no salt.”
With a click, Lu Peng opened a can of beer.
“High school students shouldn’t drink alcohol.” Ning Sheng emphasized, glancing at Xu Ling.
“Just a little bit.” Lu Peng raised his glass high and called out, “To our youth.”
Ning Sheng sneered, Xu Ling sneered, and the math nerd sneered.
Lu Peng: “….”
“Then here’s to princess growing taller.” Lu Peng raised his glass.
Ning Sheng raised his glass.
Xu Ling: “…”
Lu Peng: “Glug glug glug.”
Ning Sheng: “Glug.”
“He doesn’t seem to handle alcohol very well…” Xu Ling muttered to himself. “Did I remember wrong?”
Ning Sheng ate his food elegantly, drank his soup elegantly, then pulled out a tissue elegantly before standing up.
Xu Ling breathed a sigh of relief.
Ning Sheng stood up and slapped him across the face.
Lu Peng shouted, “Holy shit.”
Xu Ling: “…”
“Ning Ning?” He asked.
Ning Sheng raised his hand again but was precisely caught by the wrist by Xu Ling.
Lu Peng: “Holy shit, don’t fight back.”
Xu Ling: “?”
Xu Ling: “Has your heart gone to your elbow?”
“Not that conservative.” Lu Peng said. “It’s gone to your foot.”
“Who am I?” Xu Ling asked Ning Sheng.
Ning Sheng replied, “The big bad boss.”
Xu Ling: “?”
What the hell?
He asked again, “And which idiot is this big bad boss?”
“He’s drunk.” Xu Ling said. “Don’t coax him to drink next time.”
“I’m guilty.” Lu Peng said, banging his head on the table.
“Look at me again. Who am I?” Xu Ling asked Ning Sheng.
“You’re annoying!” Ning Sheng raised his hand. “Xu Dashan!”
Xu Ling was pleased.
“I’ll give him a bath and put him to bed.” Xu Ling told them.
“Is princess okay?” Lu Peng was super guilty. “There’s an entrance exam tomorrow morning.”
“That’s no problem.” Xu Ling said. “Chinese is so simple, he could take it with his eyes closed.”
Lu Peng: “…?”
Xu Ling: “Hiss…. he kicked me.”
Xu Ling: “Fuck, his temper is even worse when drunk than when sober.”
Xu Ling: “Stop hitting me. Don’t your hands hurt!”
Li Haoyue: “Tsk.”
Xu Ling told him, “Go read your math book.”
Then he crouched down, hoisted Ning Sheng up, pushed open the bathroom door, and threw him into the bathtub with a splash.
The person seemed to have completely blacked out, since Ning Sheng would never normally smile at him like this—bright and alluring.
Ning Sheng had grown from such a tiny little bundle who couldn’t even walk on his own into the clean, beautiful young man he was today.
Xu Ling leaned down and touched Ning Sheng’s hair, which had been dampened by the water. Seeing no reaction from him—neither arrogant nor resistant—
