Chapter 57.1

Editor: Princess

Xu Ling lay flat on his back, gripping a small cookie in his hand steadily.

“Did you understand what I said?” Ning Sheng nearly straddled Xu Ling’s waist as he pushed Xu Ling’s head. “I know you’re very capable, but I… well, Aunt Xu would worry.”

Xu Ling thought to himself that his mother wouldn’t worry at all since she could climb that kind of small slope herself.

However, he said, “Alright.”

Ning Sheng released him.

“Does it taste good?” He pointed at the cookie.

This was something he had asked his grandmother to buy recently. It was salted cheese peanut butter flavor.

“It tastes good.” Xu Ling looked at him.

Ning Sheng felt relieved.

Initially, when he had declared he would be a dog, it was clearly the little demon king’s outrageous statement, yet over time, Xu Ling seemed to genuinely treat him well. He did whatever he was told to do, and also did things he wasn’t supposed to do.

It was truly… both gratifying and troublesome.

Ning Sheng spent most of the day walking through the mountains, seeing hills and streams, curious about everything he encountered.

Hence before sleep, as he lay in bed, he gradually felt soreness spreading from his limbs and waist.

Xu Ling slept so soundly, even calling out “Princess” in his dreams.

Ning Sheng sat up and slapped him awake with one palm.

Xu Ling: “???”

“What happened? What’s wrong?” He asked as he sat up.

“I think I’m growing taller.” Ning Sheng told him.

Xu Ling: “…”

“Do your legs hurt?” Xu Ling asked. “It shouldn’t be growing pains though.”

It was because Ning Sheng had poor physical condition and had walked too much during the day.

Ning Sheng: “Yes.”

Xu Ling: “No.”

The pain transferred to Xu Ling’s face.

Xu Ling: “Fine, yes.”

“Then come closer, I’ll massage it for you.” Xu Ling turned on the light.

Ning Sheng pushed away the thin blanket, lay down properly, and kicked Xu Ling.

“Coming.” Xu Ling sat up.

Ning Sheng dreamed about growing taller every day, although his body proportions were actually perfect. He looked slim when clothed, yet when undressed, he wasn’t overly thin. His waist was narrow and lean, his legs were long and straight, and because he had escaped the wheelchair very early, he didn’t have that sickly, frail appearance.

“What are you spacing out about?” He asked.

Xu Ling: “I suddenly feel a sense of accomplishment.”

Ning Sheng: “?”

Ning Sheng regretted it after being massaged once. This primitive human’s hand strength was too heavy.

“I don’t want it anymore.” He kicked Xu Ling away. “Your hands are too heavy, it really hurts.”

“It’s not heavy, just this much force.” Xu Ling made a fist and pounded the bed.

The house started shaking.

Ning Sheng: “?”

Ning Sheng: “Did you punch through to the Earth’s core?”

Xu Ling: “…”

“No.” Xu Ling said calmly. “There’s another earthquake.”

Ning Sheng: “???”

The mountainous area where Qing’an Town was located frequently experienced small earthquakes. The locals were accustomed to them, but only Ning Sheng got scared every time.

The house stopped shaking.

“It’s fine, don’t be afraid.” Xu Ling lightened his force as he massaged Ning Sheng’s calves. “How about this?”

Ning Sheng: “Barely acceptable.”

His legs became soft from the massage, the soreness in his waist and legs eased, and he gradually felt drowsy.

“That’s enough.” He softly hummed and told Xu Ling to stop.

Xu Ling’s hands paused, his fingertips still retaining the warm, delicate sensation.

“Sleep.” Xu Ling said. “I’ll keep watch for you.”

Xu Ling: “I’ll wake up at the slightest sound, and if we need to escape, I’ll carry you on my back.”

Ning Sheng fell asleep drowsily.

**

Small earthquakes in Qing’an Town were commonplace, causing no impact on daily life. Hence early the next morning, Xu Ling carried his bamboo basket up the mountain to find wild fruits again, however he didn’t bring Ning Sheng this time.

Ning Sheng followed Aunt Xu to feed the chickens, pigs, and sheep, while also listening to Aunt Xu tell stories.

“…After discovering he had a fiancée, I ran away.” Aunt Xu said. “I wouldn’t be a mistress.”

“Wow.” Ning Sheng clapped. “What about Xu Ling then?”

Aunt Xu: “He was the ball in ‘taking the ball and running.’”

Ning Sheng: “…”

“Qing’an Town is remote, yet the water and soil nurture people well. The children here all have good personalities.” Aunt Xu told him. “I thought I’d let him grow up freely, and when he’s older, whether he stays or leaves will be up to him.”

“I also like it here.” Ning Sheng said.

“Little Bell is different from his biological father—he’s a good child.” Aunt Xu said. “I raised this child, so I have some judgment.”

I also have judgment, Ning Sheng thought to himself.

“Ning Ning, this woven leaf handbag is for your grandmother.” Aunt Xu handed it to him. “She mentioned last time that she wanted two more.”

“Alright.” Ning Sheng said. “Then I’ll go home tonight.”

He had been staying at Xu Ling’s house every day recently, and his grandmother had gotten used to it, too lazy to bother with him.

“Little Bell and the others are going to plant carrots in the field this afternoon. Do you want to go?” Aunt Xu asked him.

Ning Sheng: “Yes!”

He had only eaten them but never planted them. He absolutely had to go see.

“It’s really hot outdoors.” Aunt Xu laughed at him. “They’re all reluctant to go.”

Ning Sheng: “I’ll go! I’ll go help!”

The field belonged to Xu Ling’s stepfather. Every year they planted some vegetables according to the season, and if it happened to be during winter or summer vacation when school wasn’t in session, Xu Ling would help.

Xu Ling hadn’t brought Ning Sheng in the morning and picked a full basket of wild fruits, completing his task with extra credit.
