Chapter 51.1

Editor: Princess

“What are you standing there for? Go catch him.” Xu Ling said.

Lu Peng climbed out after him.

“Should I wear it? I’ll wear it!” Xu Ling asked.

Xu Ling: “Mom, are you not even trying to hide that look of disgust?”

Xu Ling’s mother: “If you wear it, I’m afraid the pomegranates in town won’t sell next year.”

Xu Ling: “…”

“The little flower god needs to be beautiful.” Xu Ling’s mother told him. “Ning Ning hasn’t fully grown yet, so his frame is small. Which child in town is as beautiful as Ning Ning?”

Xu Ling: “Don’t say that in front of him. He’s been jumping up to touch the door frame every day lately, trying to grow taller.”

Xu Ling’s mother: “It’s just for half an evening. Then you can row the little boat representing the pomegranate flowers.”

Xu Ling’s mother: “The flower god’s feet can’t touch the ground, so you’ll be responsible for carrying him.”

Xu Ling: “Hmm…”

Xu Ling: “Let me think about it.”

Xu Ling’s mother: “The market said if you agree, they’ll give you another little black pig.”

Xu Ling: “Change it to something else! No more pigs.”

Xu Ling wandered around half the playground, then found Ning Sheng by the parallel bars.

“Come on, princess.” Lu Peng said. “The harvest festival market only happens in years with good harvests. The town hasn’t had one for several years. Playing the little flower god means lots of food.”

“Have I never seen food before?” Ning Sheng sat on the parallel bars.

“Did you climb up there yourself?” Xu Ling asked.

Lu Peng: “He stepped on me to get up.”

Lu Peng: “Why are you glaring at me? Do you want to be stepped on too?”

Xu Ling grabbed the parallel bars and climbed up to sit as well.

“Shut up.” Ning Sheng said.

Xu Ling: “…I haven’t even opened my mouth yet.”

“I’m a boy. I absolutely won’t play some pomegranate flower god.” Ning Sheng said.

“The Qing’an Town legend doesn’t specify whether the flower god is male or female.” Lu Peng interjected.

Ning Sheng: “Anyway, this young master won’t wear that little red dress.”

“You kids, what time is it? Why aren’t you back in your dorms?” The principal passed by the playground.

Ning Sheng: “We’ll read our self-criticisms tomorrow morning. We can include this matter too.”

Principal: “…So?”

Ning Sheng: “We’ll sit here a bit longer.”

Principal: “…”

Aunt Xu kept her promise and came to Number Nine Middle School the next day to meet Ning Sheng and Xu Ling’s homeroom teacher.

The homeroom teacher had originally thought these children’s parents would also be particularly difficult to deal with, but unexpectedly, Xu Ling’s mother was quite cooperative.

The homeroom teacher: “The child’s grades are very good, it’s just that he’s bit too lively.”

Xu Ling’s mother: “Sorry, I didn’t teach him well.”

The homeroom teacher: “They’ve been skipping classes lately and even hit classmates.”

Xu Ling’s mother: “Sorry, I didn’t teach him well.”

The homeroom teacher: “They don’t return to their dorms at night and wander around the playground.”

Xu Ling’s mother: “Sorry, I didn’t teach him well.”

Xu Ling’s mother: “I was once deceived by a scumbag, busy with life, raising a child alone…”

When Xu Ling went to the office, the homeroom teacher and his mother were chatting enthusiastically.

The homeroom teacher looked up at him with a gaze filled with deep sympathy.

Xu Ling: “?”

“I’ve settled things for you.” Xu Ling’s mother said as she came out of the office. “Have you settled Ning Ning?”

Xu Ling’s head ached.

“Don’t worry.” Xu Ling said. “I have plenty of methods.”

When Xu Ling returned to the dorm, Lu Peng was teaching Ning Sheng how to play with an old-fashioned spinning top.

Ning Sheng showed little interest, holding the whip for spinning the top in his right hand while his left fingers were wound with whip cord. When he saw Xu Ling come in, he merely raised his chin slightly and cast a casual glance.

Xu Ling’s eyelid twitched. Then he grabbed the cold water on the table and drank it all in one gulp, then took two more steps forward and grabbed Ning Sheng’s collar.

“Play the little flower god.” Xu Ling said.

Ning Sheng remained unyielding even unto death: “No.”

“Agree quickly.” Xu Ling said, “Otherwise I’ll…”

Xu Ling: “Kneel down and beg you.”

The corners of Ning Sheng’s mouth curved slightly: “You kneel.”

Xu Ling rushed over, knelt on the ground, and hugged his waist tightly: “Be the flower god!”

Ning Sheng’s waist was nearly broken from the impact: “Xu Ling! You… rogue!”

Lu Peng: “…”

“Is this the method he was talking about?” Li Haoyue asked.

“Let go of me.” Ning Sheng was about to die of anger.

“Be the flower god!” Xu Ling hugged tighter and tighter, while still finding time to chat: “Your waist is so thin.”

“Are you a mad dog?” Ning Sheng knocked Xu Ling’s head with the whip handle.

His waist was sensitive, so being touched once or twice made him feel ticklish and want to dodge.

Yet Xu Ling knew this about him and held him tightly.

“Fine, I’ll go, okay?” Ning Sheng compromised. “Let go!”

Xu Ling released his hands.

Xu Ling handed him a photograph.

Ning Sheng: “What’s this?”

In the photo was a little girl wearing a pomegranate flower god dress.

“Your grandmother.” Xu Ling told him. “The pomegranate flower god from back then.”

Ning Sheng: “Wow.”

His grandmother was really beautiful at that time.

He had heard his grandmother mention Qing’an Town’s special harvest festival. She even told him that every harvest festival reminded her of her youth.

“This is also one of the reasons they’re looking for you.” Xu Ling said. “The photo is from the market’s collection. Your grandmother probably doesn’t even have it. This one’s for you.”

Ning Sheng: “Wow…”

“Dog Xu has learned to use both soft and hard tactics.” Li Haoyue said quietly while watching. “Princess is actually quite easy to handle.”

Lu Peng: “Xu Ge is amazing.”

Two days later, Qing’an Town’s harvest festival began.

In the afternoon, at Xu Ling’s house, Ning Sheng had a last-minute change of heart.

“Harvest festival sponsors: Qing’an Market, Xu’s Car Shop, Lu’s Meat Shop, Li’s Orchard.” Ning Sheng read from the promotional flyer. “You actually dare to make this young master work.”

Xu Ling comforted him: “It’s not work, it’s helping.”

Ning Sheng: “Isn’t there any other role to play?”

“This year Qing’an Town had a bumper harvest of pomegranates and green peppers.” Lu Peng said. “So besides the pomegranate flower god, there’s also a green pepper vegetable god.”

Ning Sheng: “?”

That sounded really stupid. He’d better stick with pomegranates.

“Ning Ning, go change clothes.” Aunt Xu told him. “Then I’ll do your makeup.”

Ning Sheng: “…Okay.”

It seemed, acceptable.

The dress looked quite proper, exposing only a little shoulder and back. The fabric was abundant, the waist was tightly fitted, and the irregular hem was also long, almost reaching his ankles. Except for being a bit bright in color, it wasn’t as scary as he had imagined.

He went to change.

“Dog Xu, zip me up.” He called to Xu Ling.

Xu Ling went over.

He held the young man’s waist with one hand while gripping the zipper with the other. The young man’s snow-white back was hidden beneath the brilliant red gauze, his beautiful spine extending into the depths of the red fabric.

Xu Ling’s hand trembled slightly, his movements becoming hesitant.

“Are you done?” Ning Sheng asked impatiently.

Xu Ling: “Mm.”

Ning Sheng pushed the door open and walked out.

Li Haoyue: “?”

Lu Peng: “Holy shit.”

Ning Sheng: “?”

Why did the clothes feel so breezy?

He looked down.

Ning Sheng: “Hmm…”

Even if they wanted to create the feeling of flower petals, did this dress’s slit really need to be so high? His legs were showing.

Ning Sheng: “This young master quits.”

“Hold him down!” Aunt Xu commanded, and three people rushed forward, pressing Ning Sheng into a chair.

“It looks good.” Lu Peng persuaded. “Right, Dog Xu?”

Xu Ling: “Mm.”

I’m done for. I’ve completely lost face.

This was all Ning Sheng could think about.
