Editor: Princess
Holidays were always short. After the Mid-Autumn Festival, they had to return to school.
Early in the morning, Xu Ling was stuffing clothes into his backpack.
“Little Bell.” Ning Sheng called from downstairs, “Did you see our pig ear? It’s missing.”
“I put it in the fridge.” Xu Ling said from upstairs.
“There’s only a raw one in the fridge.”
Did the fridge… turn into a time machine?
“Take another careful look.” Xu Ling told him, then, “I’m here.”
Then he opened the door of the fridge, and froze.
“Could it be that Lu Peng’s dad forgot to give it to us yesterday?” Ning Sheng asked him.
Xu Ling: “It’s very possible.”
**
Today was the day to return to school, however Ning Sheng’s family driver wasn’t around, so Xu Ling’s stepdad drove, taking all four of them back.
The trunk popped open, and their backpacks were tossed in.
Xu Ling pulled open the front passenger door and got in.
Xu Ling’s stepdad: “Oh?”
Xu Ling: “Just keeping you company.”
Xu Ling’s stepdad: ”?”
“Nice, I get to ride with princess today.” Lu Peng climbed in happily. “Princess always smells nice.”
“It’s probably my body wash.” Ning Sheng said. “I’ll get you a whole box later.”
Lu Peng: “Holy shit.”
Li Haoyue, as usual, had his nose buried in a thick math book, occasionally counting on his fingers like some kind of mental calculator—honestly, he looked more professional than the fortune teller at the town entrance.
Now that he was a little farther from the source of his heart palpitations, Xu Ling felt at ease for the time being. He buckled his seatbelt and shut his eyes to rest.
It was time to cultivate his mind, suppress certain improper thoughts.
However the moment the car left town, he opened his eyes.
“Lu Peng, stop squishing him.” Xu Ling said.
“Oh, okay.” Lu Peng shifted toward the door.
A while later, he opened his eyes again.
“Lu Peng, lower your earphone volume.” Xu Ling said.
“Oh, okay.” Lu Peng adjusted it.
A little later—
Xu Ling: “Lu Peng—”
“Should I just get out and run there instead?” Lu Peng asked sincerely.
Xu Ling: ”…”
“Let’s switch seats.” Xu Ling said.
“Wow, that was short-lived.” Xu Ling’s stepdad teased. “You didn’t even last past Qing’an Town.”
Xu Ling: “Just drive and talk less.”
Xu Ling’s stepdad: “Why are you worrying for nothing? It’s not as if I’m driving with my mouth.”
For this trip back to school, Ning Sheng had also brought Xu Ling’s violin.
Big cities had more opportunities, so if there were any school events, Xu Ling could perform, add a few pages to the “Devil King’s Growth Saga”.
The ride was long and boring, so Ning Sheng opened the case and started tuning Xu Ling’s violin.
He had perfect pitch, and so the tuning was quick. A few plucks of the strings, and it was done.
“Alright, let me try it.” In the cramped car, Ning Sheng tested it with a few notes, playing “The Blue Danube”.
Suddenly, the interior of the beaten-up car felt luxurious. Even Xu Ling’s stepdad felt like the steering wheel in his hands had turned into a wine glass.
Ning Sheng’s finger, still covered with a band-aid, pressed against the strings.
“The tone is still a bit off.” Ning Sheng said. “This young master will buy you a better violin.”
Then he packed the violin away and subconsciously reached for his bank card.
Ning Sheng: “Ah…”
His card was frozen. He didn’t have that kind of money anymore.
He pursed his lips in frustration.
A sudden drop in lifestyle standards was hard to adjust.
His sulky expression happened to be caught by the person next to him.
Even though Ning Sheng was just upset about not being able to drop hundreds of thousands in one go, to Xu Ling, he just looked adorable.
He raised his hand, wanting to pat Ning Sheng’s head. However just as his fingers were about to touch the soft black hair, he hesitated, his hand hanging midair, neither up nor down.
Ning Sheng tilted his head slightly and bumped his forehead against the suspended hand.
Soft black hair brushed against Xu Ling’s fingertips.
“What are you doing?” Ning Sheng asked. “There’s no need to raise your hand to speak in the car.”
“Oh.” Xu Ling lowered his hand.
“Nothing.” Xu Ling said. “Just feeling a little down about sleeping on those bunk beds again tonight.”
“Are you mocking me?” Ning Sheng asked.
The one who hated bunk beds the most was him.
The car stopped at the school gate, and three of them carried their backpacks, with one carrying nothing. They headed to the dorms.
“Ah, perfect timing.” The dorm manager stopped them. “Take your dorm duty schedule and bring it back to me later.”
The dorm manager: “Figure out a weekly cleaning rotation—each person takes a week.”
The dorm manager: “Think it over properly, because some dorms have even gotten into fights over this.”
“We don’t fight.” Ning Sheng took the paper. “We’ll fill it out right here.”
Then he neatly wrote down “Xu Ling” four times for Four weeks in October neatly.
The dorm manager: ”…? You’re all called Xu Ling?”
Ning Sheng stood on tiptoe, mimicking Xu Ling’s usual lazy demeanor, slinging an arm around his shoulder and patting his face. “If he doesn’t do chores for a day, he gets uncomfortable all over.”
Warm, soft fingertips tapped against Xu Ling’s cheek.
Xu Ling: ”…”
