In the morning, on the slope outside a small villa, Ning Sheng was cruising downhill on his skateboard, his right hand resting steadily on Xu Ling’s shoulder.
“You know that thing, where you go down stairs on a skateboard?” Ning Sheng said, “You zoom down, then pop up and spin midair—it looks so cool.”
“I know.” Xu Ling said, pulling away slightly after they passed the slope, “It’s not for you.”
“Who says it’s not for me?” Ning Sheng weaved his skateboard in an S-shape. “Look, I can even do this.”
The May breeze lifted the edge of the teenager’s thin white shirt, revealing a narrow, pale waist faintly.
And getting a little distracted, Xu Ling kicked a rock.
Which hit the skateboard wheel with a clunk, causing Ning Sheng to jump off and stumble back a step, however Xu Ling steadied him.
“Are you trying to assassinate me?” He asked angrily.
Xu Ling: “……..”
His fingers, through the thin fabric, brushed lightly against the teenager’s lower back.
Lu Peng and Li Haoyue were each munching on a nectarine at the edge of the orchard, and when they saw them, they waved.
“Princess has gotten better at skateboarding.” Lu Peng said.
“Of course!” Ning Sheng tossed a bag of candy their way.
“Yeah, he’s improved.” Xu Ling said in response. “Now his speed’s just a tiny bit slower than walking.”
Ning Sheng: “Xu Dashan! You’re not getting any candy!”
“If you love hearing flattery so much, you might as well just buy a row of parrots, train them, and have them compliment you all day.” Xu Ling told him. “It’d be cheaper.”
Ning Sheng: “……”
“Oh, right. My dad said he wants to treat you guys to dinner.” Lu Peng told them. “He said that without you, my grades would still be underground, but now they’ve finally made it to the surface.”
Li Haoyue: “Your dad’s not going to take us to crash someone else’s banquet again, is he?”
Lu Peng: “Of course not.”
Lu Peng: “This time, it’s at my own house—my cousin’s getting married, hehe.”
Ning Sheng: “……”

The midterm results had just come out, and during today’s recess exercises, there was an extra segment to honor outstanding students.
Ning Sheng leaned against Xu Ling lazily, watching the math nerd spout bold words on stage.
“Do the high schools in the city require us to stay on campus?” He asked.
Xu Ling: “Probably right? Qing’an Town is pretty far from the city.”
“I, this young master, can just buy a house near the school.” Ning Sheng said in response.
Xu Ling: “……”
“Hey, stop patting my head! I won’t grow tall.” Ning Sheng said angrily.
Xu Ling: “It’s Lu Peng’s turn. It’s the Progress Award.”
“Poor guy.” Ning Sheng said. “He’s been waiting for this for so long.”
“It seems he stayed up late last night writing a 2,000-word acceptance speech.” Li Haoyue said as he returned. “He said every word is a gem.”
Ning Sheng: “I don’t want to hear a single word of that 2,000-word nonsense.”
“He asked me to record it.” Xu Ling told him.
Lu Peng who was on the stage started: “First, I want to thank my three good friends….”
However before he could finish speaking, a crack of thunder roared, then rain poured down in buckets.
Li Haoyue: “…Did he thank the thunder into existence?”
The morning assembly was cut short as students and teachers on the field dashed toward the school building.
Lu Peng: “???”
Lu Peng: “Ah! Let me finish!”
“I want to thank my three good friends, my teachers, and my parents…” He yelled.
