Chapter 30.1

AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: Did princess name the pigs?
[Ling]: Pretty much.
AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: Roast them. Seriously, they’re delicious. These three are top-quality pigs.
[Ling]: I’ll get scolded.
AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: When they grow up, princess will lose it.
AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: And you’ll still get scolded.
[Math is so great, I love math]: By then, Xu Ge will get scolded for stepping into the classroom front foot first.
[Ling]: Are you two gloating?
AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: Is it that obvious?
In Xu Ling’s bedroom, Ning Sheng was kneeling barefoot by the bed, his hands clutching the soft bedding, staring blankly at the two freshly washed little piglets.
This was the first time he had ever seen such furry little animals up close.
After a few minutes, someone spoke up—
Xu Ling: “If it pees on my bed, I’ll make you…”
Ning Sheng: “This is the bed that I bought.”
Xu Ling: “…”
Xu Ling: “They might have bacteria.”
Ning Sheng: “Yesterday I said the flower bed had bacteria, yet you still sat there without a second thought. Why be so fussy now?”
Xu Ling: “…”
Xu Ling: “Qi Qi keeps making noise, it might disturb your sleep.”
Ning Sheng: “Hmm…”
Xu Ling was overjoyed, his persuasion had worked.
Ning Sheng: “That’s Pei Pei, hurry up and apologize to Qi Qi.”
Xu Ling: “…”
Group Chat: “Three Golden Suns Rising” (3)
[Ling]: People do need financial independence.
[Ling]: Am I being fussy? I’m not fussy.
[Ling]: Why would I want to distinguish between Pei Pei and Qi Qi? They both look equally round.
[Math is so great, I love math]: @AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale, your dad repaid Xu Ge so much he’s gone mad.
“So cute.” Ning Sheng said, holding the two pink piglets. “What do you want to eat?”
Group Chat: “Three Golden Suns Rising”
[Ling]: Never mind roasting the pigs, he’d agree if the pigs wanted to roast me now.
[Math is so great, I love math]: Don’t underestimate yourself.
[Math is so great, I love math]: Princess would not only agree but personally send you into the pot.
[Ling]: I’ve never seen him so gentle, and it’s towards two pigs!
AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: You need to tell him these are meat pigs, not pets.
AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: Princess isn’t someone who doesn’t understand reason.
AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale: He just chooses to ignore reason.
[Ling]: Fine, I’ll tell him.
“Ning Ning.” Xu Ling took a deep breath and sat cross-legged by the bed. “Lu Peng’s family runs a butcher shop, and his dad sources pigs for it. These are…”
“I now think it’s great to be able to walk properly, to run and jump.” Ning Sheng hugged the piglets. “I couldn’t even take care of myself before, but now I can actually raise little animals.”
“You always dragged me around…. it doesn’t seem so annoying now.” Ning Sheng added.
Group Chat: “Three Golden Suns Rising”
[Ling]: @AAA Premium Piglet Wholesale, how do you raise pigs?
Behind Xu Ling’s family’s car wash was a small yard where Auntie Xu used to grow peppers and tomatoes, but recently, she had cleared out a patch of land.
So Xu Ling gathered some bricks from the car wash entrance and built a pigpen.
“Done.” Xu Ling wrapped up. “All set.”
Ning Sheng: “This doesn’t even have a roof.”
Xu Ling: “Do you want to send the pigs away with a roof?”
Xu Ling: “Lu Peng’s also didn’t have a roof, and it’s about the same shape, so let’s just add a rain shelter.”
Then he found a raincoat, propped it up as a wind and rain shield, then using a rectangular box as a feeding trough, tossed in some vegetable leaves.
“All done.” He put the piglets inside, hooked an arm around Ning Sheng’s shoulder, and headed upstairs. “Time for bed.”
Ning Sheng hesitated, “I still want to watch a bit longer.”
Xu Ling: “Watch them tomorrow, they won’t run away.”
As night fell, Xu Ling’s stepfather finished washing the last car, wrapping up the day’s work.
“Did you see the pile of bricks I left at the entrance?” He asked Xu Ling’s mom. “The ones I was going to use to build a storage shed in the yard.”
Xu Ling’s mom: “I didn’t see them, you must have misplaced them again.”
Xu Ling’s stepfather: “I didn’t.”
Xu Ling’s mom: “Anyway, I cleared out the back yard for you.”
Xu Ling’s stepfather: “Alright, I’ll look for the bricks.”
A while later, in Xu Ling’s backyard—
Xu Ling’s mom: “Aren’t these your bricks? How old are you that you’re forgetting things at this age? “
Xu Ling’s stepfather: “My bricks grew legs and built themselves into… a pigpen?”
Xu Ling’s mom: “…”
On school days, Xu Ling always woke up early.
He would do some chores for the family, then run to the market to buy breakfast for Ning Sheng.
But today, he decided not to wake Ning Sheng for the morning run, so he got up quietly, only to find the space beside him empty.
Xu Ling: “?”
In the yard, Ning Sheng was sitting on a chair, slowly nibbling on a sugar cake, with two pink piglets at his feet.
“Cornmeal with a bit of salt, peas, and soybeans, and some rice bran.” Auntie Xu was sitting next to him, mixing feed for the piglets. “This should be good for them.”
Then she placed the mixed feed on the ground for the piglets: “Qi Qi, try it.”
Meanwhile, Xu Ling’s stepfather was squatting by the pigpen, layering cement on the bricks with a trowel.
“Not cementing the pigpen, are you two trying to smash the pigs into pork patties?” He asked, a cigarette dangling unlit from his mouth. “You think it’s building blocks?”
Ning Sheng chuckled while biting into his sugar cake.
“Xu Ling built it.” Ning Sheng told him.
“Then he’s really unreliable.” The man said. “I have to give a 40% discount for the cars he washes.”
Ning Sheng: “He’s also terrible at playing the violin, there’s no emotion at all.”
Xu Ling: “…”
The noisy yard seemed to fulfill every definition of “home” he had.
“Little Bell?” Xu Ling’s mom turned. “Come eat a sugar cake. Why are you just standing there?”
Leaning against the stairs, Xu Ling walked down step by step. The morning sunlight flowed gently, Ning Sheng leaned slightly, his clean and slender hand resting on the piglet’s head.
“Let’s go.” Xu Ling finished his sugar cake in a few bites and dragged Ning Sheng away. “Time for school.”
“Thanks, Dad!” Xu Ling shouted before leaving.
In the yard, Xu Ling’s mom carried the piglets into the newly refurbished pigpen.
“In less than six months.” Xu Ling’s stepfather started, “Pei Pei and Qi Qi will weigh over two hundred pounds.”
“Let them raise them.” Xu Ling’s mom said in response. “City kids might have never seen piglets before, so let them raise them as long as they want, as long as they’re happy.”
