Editor: Princess
Right now, the enemy was hiding in the dark while they were out in the open, and there were two enemies. Mu Nan and Cheng Han didn’t dare to let their guard down at all. Sticking close together, they carefully made their way out of the auditorium.
Mu Nan used to hate reality shows. He thought they were all scripted, with every move and every word from the guests planned out in advance. So fake it was unbearable.
But now that he was actually filming one himself, his view on reality shows had completely changed.
Even though cameras surrounded him from every angle and there were crew members everywhere, that didn’t make the tension any less real.
Like right now. He and Cheng Han were back-to-back, but his eyelid wouldn’t stop twitching.
And the constant twitching was making him anxious, so he reached up to press his eyelid, and Cheng Han noticed. “What’s wrong?” Cheng Han asked.
“Nothing.” Mu Nan said in response. “Just got a really bad feeling about this.”
“If things really go south, make sure you run fast.” Cheng Han said.
Mu Nan scoffed. “You think you’re that good? What, you’re going to take on both of them by yourself?”
“Shh—” Cheng Han suddenly gestured for silence and motioned for him to listen carefully.
“I think I hear…” Mu Nan hadn’t even finished his sentence before both of them instinctively turned around at the same time.
At some point—without them noticing—a ghostly woman had appeared silently behind them.
Mu Nan’s heart skipped a beat. He had to admit, that out of all the scares in this show so far, nothing had come close to this.
The ghost’s appearance wasn’t as grotesque as some of the staff or props they had seen earlier. But that deathly pale face, those pitch-black eyes filling her entire sockets, those blood-red lips peeking out from her long, disheveled hair, and that crimson dress—the only splash of color in the dimly lit building—made her even more terrifying.
But none of that compared to the sheer horror of her silently materializing behind them.
With so many crew members around, she had still managed to appear without making a single sound. Mu Nan had heard plenty of jokes about “look-back kills” and “doorway jumpscares”, but nothing could compare to actually experiencing one firsthand.
“Run!” Cheng Han shouted, snapping him out of his daze.
Gritting his teeth, he forced his legs which were suddenly as heavy as lead to move as he sprinted forward. They didn’t need to talk, as they both knew where they had to go. The room on the top floor with the peachwood sword.
That was the key to ending this.
Normally, guys should be able to run faster than girls. But after nearly six hours without a break, they were already out of breath just from talking, let alone running.
Mu Nan was barely running faster than a brisk walk. If it weren’t for Cheng Han pulling him along, he would’ve fallen way behind.
The stairs were an even bigger challenge. The narrow, dimly lit stairwell was already dangerous on its own, but with something chasing them from behind, it was downright terrifying.
Mu Nan’s legs gave out, and he stumbled, nearly tripping on the stairs. However just as he was about to faceplant, Cheng Han grabbed him in time, pulling him back.
“Careful!” Seeing that he could barely run anymore, Cheng Han simply yanked his arm over his shoulder, letting him lean half his weight on him.
“Just go, don’t worry about me.” Mu Nan panted, trying to shake him off.
“Shut up.” Cheng Han was nearly at his limit too, because just saying those two words made his breathing unsteady. Mu Nan didn’t dare waste any more of his energy, so he shut up obediently.
But just as they were about to reach the top floor, a voice suddenly came from the stairwell door. “What are you two doing up here?”
—It was Cui Zhixing.
The moment Mu Nan saw him, his anger flared. But he didn’t even want to deal with him, so he just kept running up the stairs.
However just as they were a few steps away from the top, the ghost that had been chasing them finally showed itself. And seeing it approach, Cui Zhixing actually started closing the stairwell door.
“What the hell are you doing?!” Mu Nan shouted.
But before Mu Nan could react, Cheng Han had already made his move. Because the second Cui Zhixing tried to shut the door, he lunged forward.
He cleared the last six or seven steps in just two strides, then, without hesitation, did a sliding kick—jamming his leg straight into the closing door.
The heavy iron door had too much momentum. Even though Cui Zhixing hesitated for a second, trying to stop it from fully shutting, the door still slammed hard against Cheng Han’s leg.
A loud BANG echoed, sending a shock through everyone.
“Cheng Han!” Mu Nan screamed, his voice cracking. His panicked shout echoed through the stairwell.
Cheng Han—Cheng Han—Cheng Han—
Everyone froze, the nearby crew members were completely stunned. Even the ghost chasing Mu Nan had stopped in its tracks.
A bit of real fear was fine for the show, but if one of the guests actually got injured, they might not even be able to continue filming.
The FollowPD was about to rush over to check how badly Cheng Han was hurt, but Mu Nan pushed himself off the ground in one swift motion. He grabbed Cui Zhixing with one hand and shouted at Cheng Han, “What are you waiting for? Get up here!”
Mu Nan snapped out of it, scrambled up the last few steps in two quick bounds, and slammed the stairwell door shut, locking it. Outside, the ghost pounded on the door furiously.
Mu Nan was completely drained. He slid down against the wall, exhausted, however he still managed to glare at Cui Zhixing. “Traitor! Backstabber!”
“What are you talking about?!” Cui Zhixing struggled frantically, his arms twisted behind his back by Cheng Han, completely immobilized. “I’m not a traitor! Why are you grabbing me?!”
“You still dare say you’re not?” Mu Nan pressed, glaring at him. “Did you steal Du Ling and Duan Shi’s talismans? Is that why they got taken?!”
Cui Zhixing kept struggling. “It wasn’t me! When I got there, they were already gone!”
“Still trying to weasel your way out?!” Mu Nan stood up, motioning for Cheng Han to hold him down, then he yanked off Cui Zhixing’s shoe.
