Editor: Princess
“Did you find anything?” Cui Zhixing asked.
Mu Nan told them about the file, and the group pieced together the cause and effect, finally making some sense of it all.
The big boss of this haunted school was Shang Yaqin, who had died unjustly and used her death to take revenge on her classmates.
But since her classmates had already paid the price, why hadn’t she left? Why was she turning the entire school into a complete ghost school?
“Could it be that she wants to leave but can’t? Maybe she’s bound to this school, like a restless spirit or something?” Du Ling asked.
“That’s very possible.” Mu Nan said. “So, we need to figure out how to break her curse and help her reincarnate. If we found that file, we can definitely find more clues!”
But Cui Zhixing suddenly asked, “So, other than the file, did you find anything else?”
“Nothing else.” Mu Nan shook his head.
Duan Shi took out a talisman from her pocket. “Just this thing, but I still don’t know what it’s for. Does it stop us from getting killed or something?”
“It shouldn’t work like that.” Du Ling said. “Otherwise if we could find five talismans, wouldn’t that mean no one would die at all?”
Just then, Mu Nan noticed that Cui Zhixing was about to take something out but then put it back quietly.
“What are you holding?” Cheng Han asked directly.
Flinching, Cui Zhixing shoved it into his pocket awkwardly. “N-nothing.”
The other four all turned their skeptical gazes on him. And under their stares, his face turned red as he gave up and pulled out a talisman, throwing it to the ground. “I found one too, alright?”
He glanced at Du Ling. “You take it. Ladies first.”
“No need.” Du Ling rejected coldly. “I’m tired anyway. If I die, I can just go back and rest.”
Seeing the awkward atmosphere, Duan Shi quickly picked up the talisman and stuffed it into Du Ling’s hand. “Just take it. It might not help, but at least it’ll give you some peace of mind.”
Just as she finished saying this, the five of them were sent to separate rooms again. Before leaving, Cheng Han patted Mu Nan on the shoulder, as if telling him not to be scared.
“You promise?” Mu Nan asked with furrowed brows.
“En.” Cheng Han nodded.
Mu Nan took a deep breath. With Cheng Han’s promise, he felt an inexplicable sense of reassurance.
**
Silence. Absolute silence. Even though he knew there were cameras and staff in the room, with his eyes blindfolded, Mu Nan felt as if they weren’t there at all.
After what felt like forever, he sensed the door opening. Even though he couldn’t see, he just knew. Then, a long, drawn-out breathing sound came from in front of him.
—It’s here.
It seemed like it was his turn this time. Strangely, he wasn’t scared. Instead, he cursed Cheng Han in his heart—liar! Cheng Han was a total liar! He promised him he wouldn’t die before him, but now he was about to die!
But then, a sharp, distorted voice sounded next to his ear. The female ghost asked, “Am I useless? Am I just trash?”
Mu Nan felt his blood freeze. “You… it’s you… that voice!”
The female ghost let out a sharp laugh. Mu Nan listened as it gradually faded into the distance and disappeared.
“I have…. survived?” Mu Nan looked around in confusion. Everything seemed normal. He was supposed to be the one executed, yet here he was, still alive.
**
When the five of them regrouped, Mu Nan immediately grabbed Duan Shi and asked, “Did you ever ask me if I thought you were useless?”
“I didn’t!” Duan Shi looked at him in confusion. “Why would I ask something like that? I twisted my ankle and haven’t even had time to think about anything else!”
Mu Nan felt cold sweat running down his back. He hadn’t expected his offhand response to have given the ghost exactly the answer she wanted.
“No, that’s impossible!” Cui Zhixing suddenly shouted. “You must be hiding something! All that stuff you just said, it’s made up!”
“I’m not!” Mu Nan turned out both his pockets. “See? There’s nothing at all!”
But Cui Zhixing still didn’t believe him, because pointing at Mu Nan, he said, “What about your sleeves? Or your shoes? You could be hiding stuff there!”
“Don’t go too far.” Cheng Han, who had been silent until now, suddenly reached out and slapped Cui Zhixing’s hand away.
The sound was sharp, almost like a slap to Cui Zhixing’s face. He glared at Cheng Han angrily but didn’t say anything in the end.
It was almost dawn now, and they had been filming for four hours, so everyone was at their limit.
Mu Nan suggested, “Let the two girls rest here. The three of us can split up and search.”
“I’m fine.” Du Ling told him. “I can keep going.”
But Duan Shi grabbed her hand. “Sister Du Ling, can you stay with me? I really can’t walk anymore.”
“Stay.” Cheng Han said to Du Ling. “It’s good to rest for a bit.”
And with that, the three guys split up again, heading to different floors.
