Chapter 67
Yu Qing and Tian Mi arrived at Sugar Maple Resort more than two hours after Gu Zheng and Yu Pei had gotten there. Gu Zheng was quite surprised to see them both, as he had thought Ning Jinglan would keep Yu Qing there for a long time, never expecting Yu Qing to leave the Yu residence in just two to three short hours.
In fact, Yu Qing himself was somewhat surprised too.
After Ning Jinglan entered the Yu residence, she sat on the sofa and casually chatted with him about everyday matters, discussing the same topics they used to talk about when she lived at home. Asking if work was busy, if he was tired, if he was resting well, showing the meticulous care that all mothers under heaven did.
Everything seemed no different from before.
After finishing her conversation with him, she began chatting with Tian Mi. Initially, Yu Qing was somewhat worried, concerned that Ning Jinglan would make things difficult for Tian Mi, but Ning Jinglan got along very well with Tian Mi. During their conversation, they laughed and talked, her speech was logically clear, showing no signs whatsoever that she was a patient suffering from severe mental illness.
But Yu Qing didn’t dare relax. He suddenly thought that perhaps this was Ning Jinglan’s way of making him feel she had recovered and could come home.
Although he was very reluctant to speculate about Ning Jinglan’s actions with the greatest malice, after experiencing what happened with Father Yu and Yu Pei, their relationship could hardly return to what it once was.
Who would have known that as Ning Jinglan was chatting, the topic suddenly shifted. Her eyes fixed on the suitcases beside them as she asked, “You’ve packed luggage. Are you going somewhere to have fun?”
“Mm.” Yu Qing nodded, not mentioning that they were going to celebrate Yu Pei’s birthday, only saying, “It’s National Day holiday, I want to go on vacation with Mi Mi.”
“Oh, then you should go.” Mother Yu smiled very gently and said, “Mom will be leaving soon too.”
As soon as Ning Jinglan finished speaking, Uncle Ning looked up at her, his mouth opening as if he wanted to say something, but after Ning Jinglan turned and glanced at him expressionlessly, Uncle Ning closed his mouth again.
Yu Qing was stunned for a moment upon hearing this. He looked up at Ning Jinglan, and seeing that her words didn’t seem false, he hesitated for a while before leaving with Tian Mi.
After they left, Uncle Ning could no longer hold back and asked her, “Jinglan, don’t you oppose Ah Qing being with that woman at all?”
Ning Jinglan slowly lifted her teacup, took a sip of tea to moisten her lips, and said indifferently, “Why should I oppose it?”
“Given the Ning family’s current situation, it would be very difficult without a marriage alliance.” Uncle Ning anxiously stood up and paced back and forth in the hall, explaining all the stakes involved to Ning Jinglan.
In fact, if it weren’t for the Ning family, why would he go before Yu Qing to do so many thankless tasks? He wasn’t so idle as to have nothing better to do.
Ning Jinglan’s relationship with Father Yu back then was based on the intention of a marriage alliance between two families. When Father Yu was alive, it was manageable, because even though his relationship with Ning Jinglan wasn’t very good, the families had to maintain their surface relationship. They prospered together and suffered losses together.
But later, when Ning Jinglan killed Father Yu, the relationship between the two families hit rock bottom. Although the person in charge on the Yu side was Yu Qing, who was Ning Jinglan’s son, what help could Ning Jinglan, a patient confined in a hospital all day, possibly provide to the Ning family?
The Ning family desperately needed to establish a new relationship with the Yu family, and marriage had always been the best choice since ancient times. But Yu Qing was involved with another woman from an ordinary background.
Uncle Ning knew he couldn’t persuade Yu Qing himself, so he could only approach Ning Jinglan, hoping she would also oppose this matter and make Yu Qing break up with that woman.
But Uncle Ning forgot that what Ning Jinglan hated most in her life was marriage alliances. Her entire life had been ruined by a marriage alliance, so after listening to Uncle Ning’s words, she looked at him expressionlessly and said, “My son can like whoever he wants to like. What does it have to do with you people?”
Uncle Ning paused and said, “We’re all Ning family members; we must think of the Ning family.”
“Oh.” Ning Jinglan responded again, “But my son’s surname is Yu, and he has nothing to do with our Ning family.”
Uncle Ning was rendered speechless by Ning Jinglan’s retort. Only now did he suddenly realize how foolish it was to try reasoning with a mental patient, talking about logic, family ties, and emotions.
“But that’s not what you told me when you were in the hospital!” Uncle Ning said helplessly, raising his voice to roar at Ning Jinglan.
When he went to find Ning Jinglan today, he had thoroughly explained all these reasons to her once, and Ning Jinglan had agreed that she would persuade Yu Qing to break up with Tian Mi. Only then did Uncle Ning approach the hospital administration, explaining that today was Ning Jinglan’s younger son’s birthday and that she wanted to go home to see her son. He was even willing to pay for medical staff to stay by Ning Jinglan’s side to prevent her from having an episode, causing trouble, or trying to escape. Only then did the hospital agree to let him take Ning Jinglan out for the day.
Who knew Ning Jinglan would burn bridges after crossing them, completely ignoring the script they had agreed upon beforehand once she got out.
After hearing Uncle Ning’s accusation, Ning Jinglan laughed once, put down her teacup, and asked Uncle Ning in return, “I’m just crazy, not stupid. If I hadn’t agreed like that, would you have brought me out?”
“Ning Jinglan, you—!” Uncle Ning was furious but didn’t dare do anything to Ning Jinglan. He had no idea what a madman might do when having an episode.
Ning Jinglan remained unmoved by his rage, continuing to sit on the sofa drinking tea, waiting for the time to return to the hospital.
Uncle Ning had no way to deal with Ning Jinglan. After thinking silently for a while, he suddenly thought of another person—Yu Pei.
He was also Ning Jinglan’s son. Although Ning Jinglan didn’t like this son, if Ning Jinglan refused to trouble Yu Qing because she loved him too much, would she agree if it were Yu Pei instead?
So Uncle Ning took a deep breath, softened his tone, and said to Ning Jinglan, “If you don’t want Yu Qing to have a marriage alliance, what about Yu Pei?”
Ning Jinglan didn’t even look at him as she asked, “Who is Yu Pei?”
Uncle Ning was stunned and said, “Yu Pei is your other son.”
“I don’t know him. I only have one son.” Ning Jinglan said coldly. She suddenly slammed down her teacup, shattering it completely. The medical staff nearby quickly stepped forward, wanting to restrain her arms.
But Ning Jinglan quickly calmed down again and said to the medical staff, “Let’s go back. I don’t want to stay here anymore.”
Uncle Ning was startled by Ning Jinglan’s sudden outburst and quickly ran far away from her. Looking at Ning Jinglan’s face, more aged than her peers, and her frost-white hair, he felt that Ning Jinglan had probably truly gone completely mad, and perhaps there would be no need to visit her in the hospital anymore in the future.
As the medical staff helped Ning Jinglan into the car, she kept murmuring softly, “I only have one son…”
Yu Qing and Tian Mi, who had already left, knew nothing of all this, and Yu Pei, who had arrived at Sugar Maple Resort much earlier, couldn’t possibly know either. When they arrived, Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou were by the outdoor hot spring pool, helping Father Luo burn charcoal to prepare for grilling meat.
As soon as Father Luo and Mother Luo saw Yu Qing, who looked similar to Yu Pei, appear, they immediately understood this was Yu Pei’s family member. They smiled and came forward to greet him. Luo Changzhou had briefly mentioned Yu Pei’s family situation to Father and Mother Luo, so when they saw Yu Qing, they didn’t ask a single question about Father or Mother Yu. Yu Qing had also briefed Tian Mi about Luo Changzhou and Yu Pei’s relationship. Although she was a teacher at Nanhua High School, she wasn’t an old, rigid teacher. Seeing Luo Changzhou and Yu Pei, she smiled mischievously but said nothing, even stepping forward to help them grill meat together.
Without bothersome matters to disturb them, everyone enjoyed this grilled meat dinner very much.
During the meal, Yu Qing observed Yu Pei’s expression and saw his smile was brilliant and radiant. He stayed close to Luo Changzhou the entire time, talking and laughing with him, very happy. Clearly, he hadn’t taken the encounter with Ning Jinglan at noon to heart, so Yu Qing knew he had probably been consoled by Luo Changzhou.
Yu Qing felt indescribably complex emotions and sighed softly.
Tian Mi sat beside him with a skewer of grilled meat and asked, “What are you sighing about?”
“Nothing.” Yu Qing paused and said, “It’s just been a long time since I’ve seen Ah Pei smile so happily.”
Tian Mi said, “It’s been a long time since I’ve smiled so happily too.”
Yu Qing put his arm around her waist and asked, “You still need to go to the hospital for a follow-up next week, right?”
“No need.” Tian Mi shook her head.
“Why?”
“I called the doctor, and he said my condition has improved a lot.” Tian Mi said, “Everything will gradually get better.”
Yu Qing looked toward Yu Pei and said softly, “Yes, everything will gradually get better.”
Around seven o’clock in the evening, after the sun had completely set, Mother Luo helped Luo Changzhou bring out the cake, sang happy birthday to Yu Pei, and encouraged him to make a wish.
The cake was made by Luo Changzhou for Yu Pei. It looked quite exquisite, with wine-red berry sauce writing “Happy 18th Birthday Ah Pei” on the cake. Yu Pei looked at it and almost couldn’t bear to eat it, but Luo Changzhou still held his hand and cut the cake together with him.
Gu Zheng ate the cake while getting cream all over his face, still not forgetting to praise Luo Changzhou: “Changzhou, your skills are really good. I don’t usually like sweets, but your cake is really delicious.”
Needless to say, Yu Pei would have eaten most of the cake if he hadn’t had too much grilled meat earlier.
After everyone finished laughing, they began giving Yu Pei presents. Tian Mi and Gu Zheng both gave Yu Pei candy, Yu Qing directly gave Yu Pei a card without saying how much money was on it, and Father and Mother Luo gave Yu Pei lots of maple syrup.
Luo Changzhou was the last to give Yu Pei a gift.
Everyone watched him, wondering what he would give Yu Pei as a birthday present.
In the end, Luo Changzhou brought out a box of paint.
Father and Mother Luo and Tian Mi had no particular reaction, but Yu Qing and Gu Zheng’s expressions changed slightly when they saw the paint, because they knew that Ning Jinglan had once given Yu Pei a box of paint that he despised.
But Yu Pei looked at the paint, and after a few seconds, he smiled.
“Ah Pei, happy birthday.” Luo Changzhou held the paint and said to Yu Pei.
Once, when Yu Pei received paint from Ning Jinglan’s hands, it was like receiving Death’s scepter, but at this moment, receiving that box of paint from Luo Changzhou’s hands, it was as if he had been granted new life.
