Chapter 70
There was a saying that went, a brief separation was better than a honeymoon.
This referred to how a married couple’s feelings could be even better than during their honeymoon when they reunited after being apart.
Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou hadn’t been separated, but Yu Pei had only slept for one night, and when he woke up the next day and couldn’t see Luo Changzhou, he felt as if he had experienced a brief separation, as though he hadn’t seen him for a very long time.
He and Luo Changzhou had fooled around for half the night yesterday. Although Luo Changzhou was mindful of his body and only did it once, Yu Pei still felt somewhat uncomfortable when he woke up. However, this feeling wasn’t intense. Not catching sight of Luo Changzhou, the first thing he did after waking up was slip on his slippers and search everywhere for Luo Changzhou.
But before he could even leave the bedroom, he saw Luo Changzhou come in carrying a bowl of something. Seeing that he was awake, Luo Changzhou asked him, “Ah Pei, why are you up already?”
“Won’t you sleep a bit longer?” Luo Changzhou placed the bowl on the small coffee table in the bedroom, then walked over to continue talking with him, his words full of concern. “Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?”
Yu Pei shook his head and said, “No, I couldn’t sleep anymore so I got up.”
Yu Pei wasn’t used to staying up late and was accustomed to sleeping early and waking up early. Although he hadn’t set an alarm and Luo Changzhou hadn’t woken him up this morning, he had already woken up much later than usual today. Even if he continued lying in bed, he wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep.
Luo Changzhou smiled, kissed his forehead, took his hand and had him sit on the soft fabric sofa beside the coffee table. Then he pushed the coffee table and porridge closer to Yu Pei, while he himself only pulled over a small fabric stool to sit beside him. “Then let’s have breakfast. I just finished cooking this for you.”
Knowing that Yu Pei liked sweet things, Luo Changzhou had cooked sweet millet porridge. Just as Yu Pei spooned a mouthful into his mouth, he heard Luo Changzhou say, “This morning Gu Zheng came to call us both to have breakfast at the resort, but seeing that you weren’t awake yet, I told him we’d eat in the cabin ourselves.”
Hearing Luo Changzhou say this, Yu Pei coughed and nearly choked on the porridge. He asked Luo Changzhou, “Cough cough… Changzhou, what time is it now?”
Luo Changzhou told him, “Almost ten o’clock.”
Yu Pei used to wake up around 6:30 every day. When he woke up this morning, although he knew he had overslept, he didn’t think he could have slept that long. He hadn’t expected to wake up so late.
Gu Zheng lived next door to him at the Yu residence and knew exactly what time he got up every day. After just one night at the Luo house, he couldn’t get up the next day. Gu Zheng could definitely guess what he and Luo Changzhou had been doing.
Yu Pei was thin-skinned, and after figuring out this connection, his face immediately turned red. Anyone who didn’t know better would think Luo Changzhou had cooked him a very spicy bowl of porridge.
Gu Zheng indeed knew what Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou had been up to. He had gone to the cabin and made a round but didn’t bring the two back with him. Returning alone to the breakfast table that Father and Mother Luo had set, he relayed Luo Changzhou’s exact words to them, not daring to lift his head even once to look at Yu Qing’s expression.
It wasn’t until the afternoon, when Luo Changzhou finally brought Yu Pei out of the cabin to the outdoor hot spring pool to find Gu Zheng, that Gu Zheng saw Yu Pei, who had been missing for half the day.
Yu Pei was wearing a white short-sleeved shirt. It was obvious he was trying very hard to conceal the marks on his body, but some red kiss marks could still be faintly seen on his neck.
And Yu Pei kept his head down, too embarrassed to really look at Gu Zheng’s face.
“Ah Pei.” Gu Zheng called Yu Pei’s name. After Yu Pei lifted his head, he pointed to his neck and said, “You need to hide that better. Don’t let your big brother see it, or he’ll go crazy.”
Hearing this, Yu Pei’s face turned even redder with embarrassment. He pulled his shirt more toward his neck, wishing it were a turtleneck. Last night when he had taken the initiative, he hadn’t thought much about it at all. He had just wanted to be with Luo Changzhou and hadn’t considered reminding Luo Changzhou not to leave marks in obvious places.
“The temperature is high by the hot spring pool, don’t make yourself too hot.” Luo Changzhou said, walking over to stop Yu Pei. “If your big brother sees it, I’ll explain for you that there were lots of bugs by the cabin, and these are bug bites.”
Yu Pei muttered quietly, “My brother would never believe that.”
Luo Changzhou still smiled, reaching up to touch Yu Pei’s hair.
After all, they had been so intimately close last night. Yu Pei also looked up at Luo Changzhou, and seeing him gaze at him with a gentle smile, couldn’t help but smile too.
Watching the two of them being so lovey-dovey, Gu Zheng thought about how he would not only have to continue watching them be affectionate for two more days at Sugar Maple Resort, but after school started, he’d have to sit behind their seats every day watching them show off their love and feed him dog food. He couldn’t help but let out a wistful sigh, “Sigh…”
Hearing Gu Zheng’s resentful sigh, Yu Pei glanced at him, only to hear Gu Zheng continue, “I really need to find a new girlfriend, or I’ll go crazy too.”
Yu Pei: “…”
Seeing that Yu Pei was truly shy, Luo Changzhou took his hand and led him away from the outdoor hot spring pool to stroll around Sugar Maple Resort and enjoy the scenery.
After there weren’t many people around, the heat in Yu Pei’s face gradually subsided. He was relaxed in front of Luo Changzhou, so he curled his fingers and held Luo Changzhou’s hand even tighter, then looked up to admire the scenery of Sugar Maple Resort from all directions.
The scenery at Sugar Maple Resort was indeed beautiful, worthy of being called picturesque. The sugar maples turned red in autumn, looking like sunset clouds from afar, making people want to capture such a scene with a camera. Yu Pei’s hands were also itching, but what he was thinking about was painting this place with a brush.
Unfortunately, he hadn’t brought any brushes or sketchbooks with him.
Yu Pei let out an almost imperceptible sigh.
However, Luo Changzhou suddenly asked him, “Want to paint?”
Yu Pei looked up at Luo Changzhou with some surprise. He almost suspected that Luo Changzhou had mind-reading abilities, always able to so easily guess what he was thinking.
Although Yu Pei hadn’t answered yet, when he looked up, Luo Changzhou could tell what he meant from his expression. So Luo Changzhou said, “Wait here for me, I’ll go get you a notebook and brushes from the cabin.” He had not only bought Yu Pei paints but also prepared some paper and brushes, thinking that if Yu Pei suddenly wanted to paint, he wouldn’t be left without any tools.
“No need.” Yu Pei quickly grabbed Luo Changzhou’s hand.
He really wanted to paint, but he wasn’t that eager, and although he felt he had come to terms with it and was no longer constrained by the matter of the paint set that Ning Jinglan had given him, he wasn’t sure if he could still paint with the same single-minded focus as before when he picked up a brush.
“Let’s paint after we go back to the cabin.” Yu Pei said to Luo Changzhou.
“Okay.” Luo Changzhou was almost completely accommodating to Yu Pei. Whatever he said was fine.
Yu Pei smiled, and catching sight of the red leaves of the sugar maple trees in his peripheral vision, he suddenly thought of something and asked Luo Changzhou, “Was Sugar Maple Resort named after these sugar maple trees?”
“Mm.” Luo Changzhou nodded, picking up a red maple leaf from the ground and holding it in his hand. “My dad was too lazy to think of a name. He said since the resort was full of these sugar maple trees anyway, the resort might as well just be called Sugar Maple Resort.”
Yu Pei thought of the maple syrup he had eaten before and asked him, “Is the maple syrup we ate extracted from this type of tree?”
“Yes.”
Yu Pei became even more interested, “Can these trees also be tapped for sugar?”
“These trees can’t.” Luo Changzhou said. “The winters in South City aren’t cold enough. Sugar maples only produce a lot of sugar when it’s particularly cold. The sugar maple trees in the resort can only be looked at. They can’t really produce any sugar.”
“I see…” Yu Pei felt that Luo Changzhou really knew everything.
“Why did you suddenly ask about this?” Luo Changzhou looked down at him, thinking Yu Pei was interested in maple sugar extraction. “Most of the maple trees around South City can’t be tapped for sugar. If you want to see sugar extraction, I can take you to the north during the vacation after we graduate. The maple trees there should work.”
“Great.”
Yu Pei had never left South City. Although his family was wealthy, he had never left South City to travel to other places. He hadn’t even visited some of the famous scenic spots in South City. Previously, he hadn’t been interested in traveling, but after being with Luo Changzhou, he suddenly wanted to go to the north to see what the northern region that raised Luo Changzhou actually looked like.
That evening when they returned to the cabin, Yu Pei sat in front of the easel. Seeing this, Luo Changzhou didn’t disturb him and worked on his homework and read books alone at the desk. He also opened the test papers Yu Pei had done for the monthly exam, analyzing his wrong answers, planning to teach Yu Pei how to solve these problems in a few days.
Yu Pei didn’t use paints to paint. He just sketched the Sugar Maple Resort he had seen during the day.
It wasn’t that he was still resistant to paints, but through simple sketching, he discovered that his painting skills had indeed declined somewhat. After all, counting the more than half a year he had been hospitalized for treatment, he hadn’t painted for almost a year.
Luo Changzhou wasn’t an art student, so naturally he couldn’t judge how well Yu Pei painted. Seeing Yu Pei put down his brush, he walked behind him, embraced him, rested his chin on his shoulder, and asked, “Not painting anymore?”
“Mm.” Yu Pei responded, thought for a moment, then said to Luo Changzhou, “Changzhou, after school starts, will you accompany me somewhere?”
“Sure.” Luo Changzhou quickly agreed, without asking where he wanted to go.
“I want to go see Teacher Bai at his studio.” Yu Pei explained. “Teacher Bai is the person who has been teaching me to paint. He has a studio.”
There was something Yu Pei didn’t say explicitly: soon he might have to take the art college entrance exams, and most art students underwent intensive training before the exams. Some good art training schools were in other places, with the farthest ones in the Imperial City. Yu Pei didn’t want to go so far for intensive training. If possible, he wanted to ask Teacher Bai for help.
Teacher Bai was a somewhat well-known figure in art circles, and his individual tutoring wouldn’t be any less effective than attending intensive training at a training school.
“Alright.” Luo Changzhou bent down and kissed the corner of Yu Pei’s lips. This kiss was very light, containing no trace of desire, only clearly expressing Luo Changzhou’s inner affection for Yu Pei. “Wherever you want to go, I’ll accompany you.“
