Chapter 61

Yu Pei hesitated for a moment, but still picked up his phone after the ringtone had sounded for a few seconds.

“Changzhou…” Yu Pei tried hard to adjust his voice, not wanting Luo Changzhou to notice anything wrong with his tone.

After hearing his voice, Luo Changzhou didn’t respond immediately. He paused for a second before asking: “Were you asleep? Ah Pei.”

Yu Pei replied: “No, I wasn’t.”

Luo Changzhou just said: “Your voice sounds hoarse. I thought you were sleeping and my call woke you up.”

Although he said this, Yu Pei knew that he had probably already noticed something was wrong, just hadn’t called it out.

Luo Changzhou then asked him: “Are you sleepy now?”

“Mm.” Yu Pei wasn’t actually sleepy yet, but he knew that closing his eyes and going to sleep now was his best choice.

“Then sleep.” Luo Changzhou chuckled softly. “Want me to sing you a lullaby?”

Yu Pei asked him: “Changzhou, you can sing?”

“I definitely don’t sing well, but it should still work for lulling you to sleep.” There was a slight rustling sound from Luo Changzhou’s side, probably him turning over.

Yu Pei also turned over, found a comfortable position to lie down on the bed, pulled the blanket up to his neck, and waited for Luo Changzhou to sing him a lullaby.

He didn’t have to wait long before Luo Changzhou’s deep singing voice came through the phone’s speaker. Yu Pei placed his phone beside his pillow, closed his eyes, and softly said goodnight to Luo Changzhou.

That singing voice kept echoing in his ears until he fell asleep.

When Yu Pei was woken up by his alarm clock the next day, he looked at his phone and discovered that his call with Luo Changzhou still hadn’t ended, and the call log showed they had been on the phone for nearly eight hours.

“…Hello?” Yu Pei held his phone to his ear and tentatively called out.

“Awake?” Luo Changzhou’s voice appeared quickly. He must have been on mute before, so Yu Pei hadn’t heard any sound. Now that he had turned off the mute, Yu Pei could hear Luo Changzhou’s movements clearly.

Yu Pei listened carefully and thought he heard the sound of a spatula hitting the bottom of a pan. He asked: “Changzhou, are you cooking something?”

“Yeah, I’m making honey soft-boiled egg pancakes for you. I’ll bring them to school for you to eat later.” Luo Changzhou said, “So get up quickly. I’ll hang up the phone now, see you at school in a bit.”

“Okay.” Yu Pei smiled brightly, quickly jumped out of bed to wash up and get dressed. When he left his room with his backpack, he still had a smile on his face.

When Gu Zheng saw Yu Pei, he found it strange, wondering what happy thing had happened to Yu Pei to make him smile so cheerfully. But when he and Yu Pei came downstairs to the hall, he immediately saw Yu Qing sitting at the dining table waiting for them to eat breakfast, his expression grave.

Yu Qing’s work schedule started earlier than their school schedule, so they almost never ate breakfast together. Gu Zheng couldn’t help but ask: “Big Brother Yu, haven’t you gone to work yet?”

“Mm, I’ll go after breakfast.” Yu Qing said while looking up at Yu Pei. Seeing that he seemed to be in good spirits, Yu Qing picked up his chopsticks to eat the steamed bun in his bowl.

Halfway through eating, Yu Pei suddenly seemed to remember something and asked Yu Qing: “By the way, big brother, are you in love?”

Hearing this news, Gu Zheng immediately widened his eyes and looked at Yu Qing.

Yu Qing was stunned for a moment, then smiled and nodded: “Yes, when it’s your birthday, big brother will bring her to meet you.”

Yu Pei responded: “Oh, okay.”

After the brief exchange between the two brothers, they began eating breakfast in silence, leaving Gu Zheng completely bewildered with a head full of questions.

After getting in the car to school, Gu Zheng immediately asked Yu Pei: “Ah Pei, your big brother is in love?!”

Yu Pei answered: “Yes.”

“How is this possible?” Gu Zheng exclaimed, “Your big brother is actually in love! I always thought your big brother was the type who wouldn’t fall in love.”

Yu Pei looked at Gu Zheng and asked strangely: “Why would you think that?”

“How should I put it, I just felt like Big Brother Yu wasn’t the type to like other people. I always felt that even if he were to get married, it would probably be because of a business marriage or something…” As Gu Zheng spoke, his voice grew quieter.

Yu Pei shook his head and said firmly: “Big brother definitely wouldn’t have a business marriage.”

Hearing this, Gu Zheng instinctively wanted to ask Yu Pei why he was so certain, but then he immediately remembered the result of Father and Mother Yu’s business marriage, so he closed his mouth and sighed deeply.

When they arrived at school and saw Luo Changzhou waiting for Yu Pei under the old tree, his sighing became even heavier.

So heavy that even Luo Changzhou, whose heart and eyes were full of only Yu Pei, couldn’t help but turn back to look at him and ask: “Why do you keep sighing?”

“Changzhou, do you know?” Gu Zheng said with immense sorrow, “Big Brother Yu is in love.”

Luo Changzhou asked him back: “Isn’t that a good thing?”

“It is a good thing.” Gu Zheng was very sad, “But this way, among all of us, I’m the only single dog left.”

Gu Zheng was also helpless. Originally, among all of them, he should have been the least likely to be single, but somehow things went wrong, and after coming to Nanhua, he hadn’t found a single girlfriend.

Just thinking about Yu Pei’s birthday, when everyone would be going to the Sugar Maple Hot Spring Resort in couples to celebrate, with only one single dog mixed among the couples, made Gu Zheng feel incredibly heartbroken. He didn’t even lie down to sleep during break time anymore, just propped his chin up looking at his classmates in a daze, pondering in his heart how he could escape singlehood.

But instead of figuring out how to escape singlehood, he discovered something odd. Luo Changzhou, Yu Pei, and his seats were all in the group by the wall, but across from them, separated by an entire large group, there was a girl who kept frequently turning back to look in the direction of Luo Changzhou and Yu Pei.

At first, Gu Zheng thought he was seeing things, but after observing for a while, he found he wasn’t wrong, because that girl turned back way too frequently, and each time she looked in the direction of Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou’s seats, no matter what they were doing, she could watch for a long time.

But Gu Zheng hadn’t been at the school for very long since transferring, so he hadn’t completely memorized all his classmates’ names yet. Plus, he wasn’t very familiar with this girl, so for a moment he couldn’t remember her name. So when the girl turned her head back, Gu Zheng poked Yu Pei’s back: “Hey, Ah Pei—”

“Hmm? What’s wrong?” Yu Pei was currently eating the honey soft-boiled egg pancake that Luo Changzhou had made for him.

The egg pancake was once again made in a heart shape, plump and bulging, with sweet honey juice wrapped inside that would burst in your mouth with a gentle bite, sweet enough to make you feel soft and fuzzy.

Yu Pei turned to look at Gu Zheng while biting half the egg pancake. Because he turned too quickly, some honey juice flowed out from the corner of his lips. Yu Pei was worried it would drip on his clothes, so he immediately tilted his head back. Luo Changzhou, sitting beside him, saw this and directly used his thumb to wipe the corner of his lips, cleaning off the honey juice.

Seeing this somewhat overly intimate gesture between the two, Gu Zheng’s eyelid twitched violently. He quickly looked around. His desk mate had gone to the bathroom with a friend and wasn’t there, and there didn’t seem to be anyone around paying attention to them. The girl who had been secretly watching Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou also hadn’t turned back, so he breathed a sigh of relief.

Yu Pei swallowed the egg pancake in his mouth and took the wet tissue that Luo Changzhou handed him to wipe his hands and mouth. Seeing that Gu Zheng wasn’t speaking, he asked again: “What’s wrong?”

Gu Zheng pointed at that girl and asked him: “Ah Pei, what’s that girl’s name over there?”

Yu Pei looked in the direction he pointed: “Which one?”

Gu Zheng said again: “Over there, second group, fourth row, the girl on the right.”

Yu Pei was still counting heads when Luo Changzhou, who had good eyesight and quick thinking, looked over there and immediately said the girl’s name: “Lin Runluo.”

“Mm.” Yu Pei agreed, “It’s Lin Runluo. What about her? Ah Zheng, do you like her?”

“Yes, yes, it’s her.” Gu Zheng nodded repeatedly, then immediately said when he heard Yu Pei’s last sentence, “What do you mean I like her? I think she likes one of you two.”

Yu Pei was stunned and said: “How could that be? She seems to never date, and she even wanted to introduce girlfriends to me and Changzhou before. How could she like us?”

Gu Zheng frowned and said: “Why not? She’s been secretly watching you guys. I’ve caught her several times.”

As soon as Gu Zheng finished speaking, Lin Runluo turned back again, but happened to meet the gazes of Yu Pei, Gu Zheng, and Luo Changzhou looking at her.

She was obviously also stunned for a moment, then immediately turned her body back around, but her movements carried the uncomfortable feeling of being caught secretly watching.

Gu Zheng spread his hands: “See? What did I tell you?”

Luo Changzhou and Yu Pei had interacted with Lin Runluo before and knew it was impossible for her to like one of them, but then why did she keep looking at them?

Yu Pei’s first reaction was that Lin Runluo had discovered something about him and Luo Changzhou.

But this shouldn’t be possible.

He and Luo Changzhou were very careful about maintaining proper boundaries at school. Even if sometimes their actions were indeed more intimate than between ordinary male friends, it wouldn’t make people think in the direction of homosexuality.

But he couldn’t directly ask Lin Runluo why she was secretly watching him and Luo Changzhou.

This guess made Yu Pei anxious and restless. In his panic, Luo Changzhou suddenly grasped his hand under the desk and said: “It’s okay, don’t worry.”

Seeing Yu Pei’s expression change suddenly, and Luo Changzhou suddenly saying this seemingly random comforting words, Gu Zheng wasn’t stupid, so he immediately realized what Yu Pei was nervous about. He asked Luo Changzhou: “Did she… discover you two?”

Luo Changzhou said: “It’s possible.”

“Damn.” Gu Zheng cursed under his breath, “How did she find out? This doesn’t make sense. I’m with you two every day, and if I didn’t know the inside story, I wouldn’t have noticed either.”

“Not sure.” Luo Changzhou’s words were still as brief as always when talking to Gu Zheng.

Gu Zheng looked at Yu Pei, then at Luo Changzhou. Seeing that one was so anxious he was about to cry, while the other showed no reaction at all, he frowned, still because of Yu Pei’s nervous and frightened appearance, and couldn’t help saying: “Changzhou, aren’t you nervous at all?”
