Chapter 64

When Gu Zheng heard the name that Uncle Ning called out, he cursed under his breath and subconsciously stood up to block in front of Yu Pei.

Yu Pei showed no reaction. He watched as that woman slowly got out of the car. She was still much the same as before, exquisite makeup, wearing expensive haute couture clothing. If not for the several medical staff accompanying her, no one would imagine this woman was a patient residing in a psychiatric hospital.

“Alright then.”

Her voice was still the same as it had echoed in Yu Pei’s ears and dreams countless times before, always gentle and soft when facing Yu Qing, but cold and indifferent toward him, as if he were a complete stranger.

Yu Qing couldn’t possibly imagine that Uncle Ning would actually do such a thing. He had actually brought Ning Jinglan out of the hospital and brought her before Yu Pei, and on Yu Pei’s birthday no less.

Although Yu Qing desperately wanted to turn around and check on Yu Pei’s condition, countless past experiences told him that right now he shouldn’t turn back, shouldn’t speak to Yu Pei, shouldn’t have any contact with Yu Pei, because that was the best choice.

Because Ning Jinglan would neglect Yu Pei. She wanted Yu Pei to be invisible in this family. His caring or their father’s concern would drive her crazy, causing her to escalate her retaliatory cold violence to torture Yu Pei even more.

“Mom.” Yu Qing took a deep breath, preventing his expression from becoming twisted with anger and fury. He tried to speak to Ning Jinglan in as gentle a voice as possible. “How did you come here? Didn’t we agree that I would visit you in a few days?”

“Your uncle said you have a girlfriend.” Ning Jinglan smiled and touched his face. “But you never told me about it, so I wanted to come see.”

Yu Qing turned his head away, slightly avoiding her touch, and took the hand of Tian Mi, who was standing beside him. “I just haven’t had the chance to tell you yet. This is my girlfriend. Her name is Tian Mi, and she’s a teacher.”

Before dating Yu Qing, Tian Mi had already heard him talk about some of his family matters. In fact, they got together because of some chance circumstances. She suffered from depression but had been working hard at active treatment. The day she went to the hospital for a follow-up, she ran into Yu Qing. They agreed to fight depression together and had confessed their past experiences and causes of illness to each other. So she had long known that Yu Qing had a mentally unstable mother. Now facing Ning Jinglan, she wasn’t too flustered and smiled politely. “Hello, Auntie.”

Ning Jinglan didn’t speak. She quietly looked at Tian Mi for a while. The silent atmosphere made everyone somewhat tense, but in the end she didn’t do anything extreme. She took Tian Mi’s hand and said with a smile, “Hello, you’re a teacher, right? How nice.”

Uncle Ning, seeing that she didn’t seem angry, was stunned for a moment and asked her, “Jinglan?”

“Mm? What is it?” Ning Jinglan turned to look at him.

Yu Qing also looked at him coldly, his icy gaze almost tangible, as if it could freeze someone. When Uncle Ning met the gazes of this mother and son, he opened his mouth but finally said hesitantly, “Nothing…”

Ning Jinglan turned back around, took Tian Mi’s hand and spoke with her, asking things like how old she was this year and how long she’d been with Yu Qing.

“By the way, isn’t today—” Uncle Ning saw himself being ignored like a transparent person. His eyes looked around, and when he caught sight of Yu Pei, they suddenly brightened. He felt he could probably find another topic of conversation. He had just begun to speak when Yu Qing interrupted him.

“Mom, let’s go inside and sit down first.”

His voice was loud, carrying obvious warning undertones, and when he said this he was looking at Uncle Ning. When Uncle Ning met his frost-laden gaze, he thought for a moment and still closed his mouth.

“Alright.” Ning Jinglan nodded. Yu Qing and Tian Mi supported her from left and right as they walked toward the main hall.

But when she walked past Gu Zheng, she suddenly stopped, raised her eyes to look at Gu Zheng, or more precisely, at Yu Pei standing behind Gu Zheng.

Gu Zheng was more than half a head taller than Yu Pei and had a stronger build, so completely hiding him wasn’t very difficult. But at this moment, no one dared to move rashly, afraid of stimulating Ning Jinglan. Although there were many medical staff who had come with her, and she absolutely had no chance to kill another person, everyone knew that the only one she could hurt was Yu Pei.

Although Yu Pei hadn’t said another word since Ning Jinglan appeared, he had been watching her the entire time. So when Ning Jinglan raised her eyes, she met Yu Pei’s gaze.

She said nothing, showed no expression on her face. After a few seconds, looking at Yu Pei, she slightly curved the corner of her mouth, then walked straight into the Yu residence.

As for what exactly she was thinking during those few seconds of eye contact, probably only she knew, and no one dared to ask what she was thinking.

The same logic applied to Yu Pei.

Gu Zheng stayed protectively in front of Yu Pei, constantly monitoring his condition, afraid that Yu Pei might have an asthma attack and collapse.

But Yu Pei’s breathing remained calm from beginning to end, and his facial expression was also very mild.

“…Ah Pei?” Gu Zheng tentatively called his name.

Hearing this, Yu Pei looked up at him and asked, “Mm? What is it?”

Gu Zheng looked into his eyes and steeled himself to continue, “Uh… your big brother and Teacher Tian probably can’t leave with me. How about we go first?”

After saying this, Gu Zheng wanted to punch himself. He really didn’t know how to talk or comfort people. But Yu Pei laughed and said to him, “Sure, I’ll let Uncle Zhuang tell my big brother.”

Gu Zheng didn’t dare to speak carelessly anymore and could only respond, “Mm…”

Yu Pei then took out his phone and briefly explained the situation to Uncle Zhuang, and then Zhang Geng drove them toward Sugar Maple Resort together.

There were many roads to Sugar Maple Resort. One of them was lined with tropical maple trees whose leaves had already begun to turn red in this season. Some had fallen to the ground, covering it with a sunset-like color that was very beautiful. This was the road Yu Pei and Yu Qing were taking today.

Last night, Gu Zheng had been looking forward to the scenery along this road, but now that they were actually here, he had no mood to appreciate the beautiful scenery. His attention was entirely focused on Yu Pei, and he kept stealing glances at Yu Pei’s expression throughout the journey.

Just as Gu Zheng was turning his head for who knows how many times to pretend to casually look at Yu Pei, Yu Pei looked at him helplessly and asked, “Ah Zheng, why do you keep looking at me?”

“Ah, no, I’m looking at the scenery.” Gu Zheng immediately said. “You can’t say that about me. If Luo Changzhou found out, wouldn’t he beat me to death?”

“Changzhou wouldn’t beat you up.”

Gu Zheng pursed his lips with a look of disbelief. “That’s not necessarily true.”

“Really, look.” Yu Pei showed Gu Zheng his phone. “I was just chatting with him. When I told him you wanted to soak in hot springs, he arranged the room closest to the outdoor hot springs for you.”

Gu Zheng leaned over to take a look and saw that Yu Pei’s tone was relaxed when chatting with Luo Changzhou, and he even had the mood to send emoji stickers. He figured Yu Pei really hadn’t taken the Ning Jinglan incident to heart.

“Alright then, it seems Changzhou treats me pretty well.” Gu Zheng pulled his lips into a smile, finally letting his constantly anxious heart settle, and turned to look out the window to begin appreciating the maple scenery along the way.

But he didn’t see that Yu Pei’s smile gradually faded, and his eyes looking down at his phone were somewhat vacant.

Zhang Geng parked the Range Rover in the parking lot of Sugar Maple Resort. You could see that there weren’t many vehicles in the resort. Luo Changzhou had said that because they were celebrating Yu Pei’s birthday, he was afraid too many people would disturb them or that they’d be too busy if business was too good, so he had limited customer flow. Even though some rooms were still empty, they told outsiders that all rooms were booked.

When Yu Pei got out of the car, Luo Changzhou was already waiting for them in the parking lot.

Yu Pei’s feet had just touched the ground when Luo Changzhou ran to him and reached out to embrace him, as if lifting him out of the car. He buried his head in Yu Pei’s shoulder and softly called his name: “Ah Pei.”

Probably without needing words to explain, anyone who saw could tell how much he missed Yu Pei.

Luo Changzhou’s embrace didn’t avoid Zhang Geng and Gu Zheng. Yu Pei wasn’t quite used to being intimate with Luo Changzhou in front of so many people. His ears immediately turned red. He glanced at Zhang Geng and Gu Zheng and said quietly to Luo Changzhou, “Ah Zheng is watching.”

“It’s not the first time anyway, he should be used to it.” Luo Changzhou said in a flat tone, not blushing at all. He turned his head to kiss Yu Pei on the cheek and asked him, “Where’s your luggage? I’ll help you carry it.”

Yu Pei said, “I’ll carry it myself. It’s in the trunk.”

But Luo Changzhou didn’t give him the chance. He opened the trunk and lifted out his luggage, had other resort staff take the luggage away, then said to Yu Pei, “You haven’t had lunch yet, right? My dad made food. Let’s go eat first.”

“Mm.” Yu Pei nodded.

However, when Luo Changzhou saw that no other vehicles were following behind them, and Yu Pei had previously told him that his big brother and his girlfriend would both come, he asked one more question: “Where’s your big brother?”

Yu Pei hadn’t told Luo Changzhou that Ning Jinglan had come and that his big brother temporarily couldn’t leave. Hearing this, his steps paused slightly, and he said, “A guest came to the house, so my big brother might come later.”

When Gu Zheng heard this sentence, he was stunned for a moment, because Yu Pei had used a very particular word, “guest.”

Among the people who came, there was clearly his uncle and his mother, but in Yu Pei’s words, their existence was like that of “guests.”

He had been wondering before whether Yu Pei had really let go. At this moment, hearing this sentence, he suddenly realized that Yu Pei probably still couldn’t completely let go.

Gu Zheng walked beside the two of them. Because he was thinking about Yu Pei’s situation, he didn’t speak. His unusual silence quickly made Luo Changzhou notice something was wrong. Taking advantage of his height, he looked down at Yu Pei walking beside him, without asking about other matters.

But for some reason, Yu Pei suddenly laughed, looking very excited as he said to Luo Changzhou, “Oh right, Changzhou, do you know who my big brother’s girlfriend is? You definitely can’t guess who it is!”

Luo Changzhou followed his lead: “Mm? From your tone, it should be someone I know too.”

“It’s Teacher Tian Mi!” Yu Pei looked up at him, his smiling eyes seeming to shimmer with moisture, whether from being too excited and happy, or for some other reason.
