Chapter 62
Luo Changzhou said, “Being nervous won’t help.”
Gu Zheng asked him again, “But what if she tells people about this?”
What Gu Zheng was asking about was exactly what Yu Pei was most worried about.
Almost all high schools had explicit rules stating “students are not allowed to date”, but not many people actually followed them. Teachers also turned a blind eye unless two students were caught in intimate acts by a teacher, or unless parents discovered their child’s puppy love and made a fuss at school asking teachers to intervene. Otherwise, there really weren’t many teachers who would actually managed puppy love.
But this situation mostly applied to dating between boys and girls, which was completely different from Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou’s situation.
“Teachers stop students from dating mainly because they’re afraid it will affect students’ studies and because parents oppose it.” Luo Changzhou said with a sigh, seeing how worried both Gu Zheng and Yu Pei were. “But for Ah Pei and me, our families already know we’re dating, and none of them oppose it. Plus, my grades can’t possibly get worse.”
When Gu Zheng thought about it, that was true. Luo Changzhou’s academic performance showed no signs of decline – he had occupied the first place for years. Teachers from the honors class had asked him several times if he wanted to transfer to the honors class, but Luo Changzhou refused every time. Moreover, Yu Pei’s studies had improved under his tutoring. Looking at it this way, their relationship seemed to have no downsides at all.
“But the classmates…” Yu Pei felt slightly relieved hearing this, but still worried about what their classmates might say.
Luo Changzhou smiled and hooked Yu Pei’s pinky finger, saying, “After graduation we won’t see them anymore. Let them say whatever they want.”
“That makes sense.” Gu Zheng clapped his hands in agreement. “We’re already seniors. After graduation, who’s going to care about all that?”
The college entrance exam meant everyone would go their separate ways.
There were so many universities across the country, each with countless majors. A class only had so many students – unless they agreed to apply to the same university, very few would end up studying together in university.
Moreover, to put it bluntly, the family backgrounds of Yu Pei, Luo Changzhou, and Gu Zheng meant they would unlikely have much interaction with their classmates in the future, especially those who weren’t particularly close friends.
“Stop worrying unnecessarily.” Luo Changzhou reached out and touched Yu Pei’s forehead. “We have vacation after school today. Instead of worrying about this, you should think about how you want to celebrate your birthday.”
“I really don’t know.” Yu Pei said. “…How about we all eat barbecue together and then soak in hot springs?”
“Alright.” Luo Changzhou’s lips curved into a smile. “Don’t buy a birthday cake – I’ll make one for you.”
“Holy shit.” Gu Zheng exclaimed. “Changzhou, you can make cakes too? Is there anything you can’t do?”
“You can learn to do it, though it definitely won’t be as good as a professional’s.” Luo Changzhou didn’t think making a cake was particularly difficult. When he heard the latter question, he looked at Yu Pei and took the opportunity to feed Gu Zheng some dog food: “As for things I can’t do, of course that would be breaking up with Ah Pei.”
Caught off guard by another mouthful of dog food, Gu Zheng was speechless. He tidied up his desk and pretended to prepare for a nap: “Fine, you’re amazing. I’m going to sleep now, I won’t disturb you two lovebirds anymore.”
Being coaxed by Luo Changzhou like this, Yu Pei couldn’t help but smile, and his anxious mood dissipated considerably. From the corner of his eye, he glanced at Lin Runluo. Perhaps because she had been caught peeking, she never looked back at them again.
Yu Pei comforted himself again – maybe he was just worrying for nothing, and she hadn’t discovered anything about him and Luo Changzhou.
And it seemed that was indeed the case, because even until school ended, Yu Pei didn’t see Lin Runluo do anything unusual, and their classmates’ attitudes toward him and Luo Changzhou were no different from usual. Only then did Yu Pei completely let go of his uneasy heart.
However, after returning home, Yu Pei began feeling restless again, though this time it wasn’t because he was worried about his relationship with Luo Changzhou being exposed, but because he was going to Luo Changzhou’s Sugar Maple Resort tomorrow.
To celebrate his birthday, Yu Qing had even cleared three whole days of rest time, as had Uncle Zhuang. Even Zhang Geng would come to his birthday party. They had already agreed that after Yu Qing’s girlfriend arrived at the Yu residence tomorrow at noon, everyone would head to Sugar Maple Resort together, stay there for two days and nights as a National Day vacation, then return the day after tomorrow.
Aside from very close relatives and friends, no other outsiders would participate in this birthday banquet, so the scale really wasn’t very large, but it was the birthday celebration Yu Pei had looked forward to most in his eighteen years.
He was so excited that even after saying goodnight to Luo Changzhou that night, Yu Pei kept tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep.
After lying there for nearly an hour and still unable to fall asleep, he couldn’t help but sit up and walk to the wall to listen carefully to the sounds from next door. Discovering that Gu Zheng didn’t seem to be asleep either, he put on his pajamas and went to knock on his door: “Ah Zheng, are you asleep?”
“Not yet—” Gu Zheng quickly came to open the door. Seeing Yu Pei standing at the doorway with clear, bright eyes, he asked, “Why aren’t you asleep yet? It’s past your bedtime. Did my gaming disturb you?”
“No.” Yu Pei shook his head. “I just… can’t seem to fall asleep?”
Gu Zheng asked him, “You’re not getting married tomorrow, just celebrating a birthday. Why can’t you sleep? Isn’t Luo Changzhou keeping you company?”
Yu Pei said, “No, I can’t go to him. I already said goodnight to him. If I contact him now, he’ll know I haven’t fallen asleep.”
“You’re making me want to snitch on you.” Gu Zheng raised his eyebrows and pushed Yu Pei toward his room. “You should just go to sleep. We need to get up early tomorrow to buy study materials.”
When school ended today, their homeroom teacher had recommended some useful practice test collections for the college entrance exam, saying interested students could buy them to practice with as they would be very helpful for studying. Luo Changzhou had to go home to prepare Yu Pei’s birthday cake, so Yu Pei had asked Gu Zheng to go with him tomorrow to buy study materials, and also buy a set for Luo Changzhou to bring to Sugar Maple Resort.
“Alright.” Yu Pei was pushed back to his room by Gu Zheng and could only lie back down on his bed.
As soon as he lay down, his phone vibrated with a text message notification. Yu Pei looked at his phone and discovered it was actually from Luo Changzhou. Yu Pei’s hand trembled – if Gu Zheng hadn’t just left, he would have thought Gu Zheng had really snitched on him.
[Ah Pei, are you asleep?]
Yu Pei replied: [No…]
[I knew you weren’t asleep.]
[Changzhou, how did you know I wasn’t asleep? I thought Gu Zheng had snitched on me.]
[Gu Zheng?]
[Yeah, I was just at his place.]
Shortly after sending the text, Luo Changzhou’s call came through: “Hm? You said goodnight to me and then went to Gu Zheng’s room?”
Yu Pei quietly defended himself: “I couldn’t sleep…”
“I guessed you couldn’t sleep.” Luo Changzhou said.
“Why?”
“When you hung up just now, your voice sounded a bit excited.”
Yu Pei’s ears turned slightly red: “You could tell even from that?”
Luo Changzhou chuckled and said, “I don’t know about others, but I can definitely tell with you.”
“Sigh, I don’t know how to explain it. I just feel a bit restless.” Yu Pei sighed and said. “I have this feeling that something will happen tomorrow.”
“It’s just celebrating your birthday. What else could happen besides that?”
“You’re right.” Yu Pei felt he might be overthinking. Sometimes he would overthink things, and the more he thought, the more he would trap himself in his thoughts, making himself restless.
“Go to sleep quickly. Aren’t you going with Gu Zheng to buy study materials tomorrow? You might not be able to get up later.”
“Mm.” Yu Pei responded. “I’ll buy your copy for you.”
“Good. If you still can’t sleep, should I sing you another lullaby?” Luo Changzhou chuckled softly on the other end of the phone, the vibration making Yu Pei’s ears feel soft and fuzzy.
Yu Pei immediately refused: “No need…”
Last night’s needing to hear Luo Changzhou sing to fall asleep was an accident. He was about to become an adult – how could he still need Luo Changzhou to coax him to sleep?
As soon as Yu Pei finished speaking, Luo Changzhou chuckled again. Afraid he might say something even more embarrassing, Yu Pei quickly said, “I’m really going to sleep now. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
After hanging up, Yu Pei didn’t immediately put his phone on the nightstand, but held it to his chest and took a deep breath. He really did have a bad feeling, though he wouldn’t know until tomorrow whether this feeling would come true. He stared blankly for a while before moving his phone away and closing his eyes to sleep.
This time Yu Pei fell asleep quickly and had a dreamless night.
Early the next morning, Gu Zheng came knocking on his door to wake him up.
Yu Pei put on the clothes he had prepared the night before and went downstairs with Gu Zheng for breakfast, then the two drove to the bookstore.
At the bookstore, they ran into several classmates from their class who had also come out to buy study materials after hearing the teacher’s recommendation. When those classmates saw that it was Gu Zheng, not Luo Changzhou, accompanying Yu Pei, they joked with him: “Yu Pei, where’s Luo Changzhou? Did you two break up? Why are you out with Gu Zheng today?”
Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou were like conjoined twins, always appearing together. Even when they occasionally ran into them after school, the two were together most of the time, sticking closer than some actual couples. Sometimes classmates would indeed joke about whether they were dating, but it was just casual talk – no one would actually think in that direction, especially since many people knew about Yu Pei’s previous crush on Qi Wenqiang.
But Yu Pei had been on edge these past two days. When he heard this comment, he was startled and froze in place.
Gu Zheng immediately put his arm around Yu Pei’s shoulders and said, “What breakup? Ah Pei and I are the original couple – Luo Changzhou is the third wheel, okay?”
Yu Pei quickly realized they were just joking, breathed a sigh of relief, and smiled: “Changzhou has something to do today, so Ah Zheng and I came out together.”
The classmate added, “He’s probably studying, right? With grades that good, he’s really impressive.”
Yu Pei nodded without saying much more. Those classmates chatted with him a bit longer before saying they had to leave since they had already bought the books they needed.
