Chapter 55

While Yu Pei was recovering at home, Luo Changzhou came to visit him every day, eating meals with him. On the second day, he even took Yu Pei’s notebook away, saying he would help Yu Pei take notes.

Sitting behind Luo Changzhou every day, Gu Zheng watched as Luo Changzhou frantically wrote two sets of notes during class, finished all his homework before school ended each day, and always scored first in the class on pop quizzes. This made Gu Zheng desperately want to find an academically gifted girlfriend too. His reason was simple: so he could copy homework and look impressive when he took her out.

But Gu Zheng felt that no matter how impressive he looked, he couldn’t compare to Luo Changzhou. Luo Changzhou was so handsome, excelled in his studies, and could even cook and do housework. As a fun-loving student, Gu Zheng always kept tabs on the school’s social circles, and Luo Changzhou was definitely the hottest “single guy” at Nanhua High. Whether on forums, in group chats, or on various confession walls, people gossiped about Luo Changzhou every day. Recently, when the Sugar Maple Hot Spring Resort started operating, students gradually discovered that this resort was actually owned by Luo Changzhou’s parents. This caused quite a stir at Nanhua High, with everyone thinking Luo Changzhou was the epitome of a tall, rich, and handsome guy. Despite Zhu Yueming’s previous “toxic relationship” incident, it still couldn’t stop other girls from confessing to him.

So when Gu Zheng went to class today, he found that someone had again left drinks and love letters on Luo Changzhou’s desk. Although Luo Changzhou didn’t even look at them before throwing them away, Gu Zheng still told Yu Pei about this when he went home that evening.

“I don’t know who left those things, but your Changzhou just took them and threw them away without a second glance. His face looked so awful when he was throwing them out, he practically announced that he hated this kind of thing. Tsk tsk, it’s really too tragic. The person who left the love letter must be puzzled too. Seeing your Luo Changzhou alone all the time, they just don’t understand why he won’t date anyone, hahaha!” Gu Zheng spoke with animated gestures, almost giving Yu Pei a live performance.

The reason so many people kept confessing to Luo Changzhou was ultimately because he had previously mentioned having a girlfriend. Having a girlfriend proved he wasn’t someone who only wanted to focus on studying without dating. But although he said he had a girlfriend, everyone saw him either with Yu Pei and Gu Zheng every day, or alone studying and reading, never playing on his phone. This didn’t look like someone in a relationship at all.

Moreover, Luo Changzhou never said where his girlfriend was from, only mentioning they would take college entrance exams together. Everyone assumed they were in a long-distance relationship, and long-distance relationships were most likely to break up. Seeing that Luo Changzhou usually didn’t use his phone to chat with his “girlfriend”, never mentioned how his girlfriend was doing, and was never seen buying gifts for his girlfriend, everyone thought they had broken up. They had no idea that Luo Changzhou’s girlfriend was actually a boy, and that boy was Yu Pei, who stayed by his side every day. They were deskmates who saw each other every day—why would they need to contact each other by phone?

“You don’t know, these past few days Luo Changzhou has been taking notes for you every day, and everyone is so envious of you. They all wish they could be friends with Luo Changzhou too, hoping he’d help them take notes.” Gu Zheng laughed heartily, “It’s making me want to find an academically gifted girlfriend too, so I could copy her homework every day.”

“Please don’t do that. If you want to copy homework, you can copy mine and Changzhou’s.” Yu Pei quickly advised him. “If you start dating, what if it affects her college entrance exam performance?”

“You’re right.” Gu Zheng thought about it and agreed. When he dated, he either looked for girls older than him who were already working or in college, or people in school who liked to have fun like him. He never got involved with good students, precisely because he was afraid of harming them.

“You’re still the lucky one.” Gu Zheng sighed with envy as he looked at Yu Pei. “You don’t have to go to class every day, just rest at home, and Luo Changzhou brings you delicious food he made every day. It makes me feel like all my previous relationships were fake.”

Every day at noon, Luo Changzhou would come to the Yu Residence, bringing homemade snacks he’d prepared. He, Uncle Zhuang, Yu Qing, and even the Yu family’s chef had all tasted Luo Changzhou’s pastries. Even the chef praised Luo Changzhou’s skills, saying they were really excellent. It was just that Luo Changzhou had to attend classes and didn’t have much time to make more, so he only made portions for Yu Pei alone. Gu Zheng couldn’t even get a taste.

Hearing this, Yu Pei lowered his eyes and smiled slightly, but thinking about what Gu Zheng had just said, he couldn’t help asking: “During these days I’ve been away… have there really been many people confessing to Changzhou?”

Oh, he’s still jealous, Gu Zheng thought to himself, hoping Luo Changzhou wouldn’t beat him up when he found out, while saying aloud: “Yes, mainly because you weren’t there, right? Everyone saw Luo Changzhou looking quite lonely by himself.”

Although Luo Changzhou got along well with his classmates, he was indeed only good to Yu Pei. He wouldn’t go play basketball with the boys during breaks, and during these days when Yu Pei wasn’t there, he wouldn’t go to the cafeteria to buy snacks during long breaks either. He just sat alone at his desk, looking very solitary.

What Gu Zheng didn’t mention was that it was fortunate Yu Pei’s seat was on the inside, otherwise many classmates would probably try to sit in his spot to talk to Luo Changzhou. Most students did this kind of thing. Even Gu Zheng would sometimes sit in a classmate’s empty seat when talking to someone, then move when the seat’s owner returned.

Yu Pei thought for a moment and said: “I’ll go to class with you tomorrow.”

“Holy shit, bro, are you feeling better? Why do you suddenly want to go to class?” Gu Zheng’s eyes widened when he heard this. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you keep an eye on Luo Changzhou. I absolutely won’t give him any chance to cheat. Besides, he’s so devoted to you, what are you worried about? Just stay home and recover properly. If something happens to you, I’ll never be able to copy Changzhou’s homework again, and he’ll probably tear me apart.”

“I’m not worried about that…” Yu Pei said helplessly. He knew how devoted Luo Changzhou was to him; he had never thought Luo Changzhou would like someone else. “I just feel that Changzhou is alone in class with no one to accompany him, and besides, I’ve recovered enough to go to class.”

A dislocated elbow wasn’t like a fracture that needed one or two months to heal. It only required about three to four weeks of rest. Moreover, Yu Pei no longer felt dizzy when getting up these past few days, and the light, floating feeling when walking had lessened considerably. Now, aside from his previously dislocated right arm still not being very usable, he had recovered quite well.

Furthermore, Yu Pei felt he had missed too many classes. If he didn’t go to class soon, he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to keep up with his classmates’ review progress.

Gu Zheng couldn’t dissuade Yu Pei, so the next day they went to class together.

Yu Pei wanted to give Luo Changzhou a surprise, so when he sent his goodnight text message before sleeping, he didn’t mention this.

But when Yu Pei went to class the next day, passing by the place where Luo Changzhou used to wait for him, he couldn’t help but slowly slow down and stop for a moment. It was empty there, with many students walking around, just without that familiar figure. But thinking about it, that made sense. Luo Changzhou didn’t know he would come to class today, so how could he be waiting there?

“Ah Pei, what’s wrong?” Seeing Yu Pei stop and not move, Gu Zheng turned around and asked.

“Nothing.” After saying this, Yu Pei quickly caught up.

When they reached the classroom, Luo Changzhou hadn’t arrived yet. Yu Pei knew he was probably cutting it close and arriving late to school like he did in the beginning. When the classmates saw Yu Pei come to school with his elbow still in a sling, they all gathered around him with concern: “Yu Pei, we heard you were in a car accident. Are you feeling better now?”

“I’m much better.” Yu Pei said with a smile, moving his right arm slightly. “I just can’t write yet.”

“Wow, so you don’t have to do homework, and you don’t have to take pop quizzes either.” Not having to do homework already seemed very happy to his classmates, and Yu Pei could also skip pop quizzes, plus Luo Changzhou was taking notes for him. His classmates said enviously: “Luo Changzhou has been taking notes for you every day since you’ve been gone. You two have such a good relationship.”

“Yes, Changzhou is indeed very good to me—” Before Yu Pei could finish speaking, he heard Qi Wenqiang’s voice.

As soon as Qi Wenqiang entered the classroom, before even putting down her bag, she walked toward Yu Pei with a smile on her face, speaking in a familiar tone as if they were old friends: “Yu Pei, you came to class.”

The fact that Gu Zheng was rescued by Qi Wenqiang’s family after the car accident wasn’t a secret in class, and Yu Pei’s previous crush on Qi Wenqiang was also well-known. When everyone saw Qi Wenqiang approaching, they said “oh” and dispersed, giving them space to talk.

Yu Pei now had no romantic feelings toward Qi Wenqiang whatsoever. Moreover, he knew that the person Qi Wenqiang really wanted to find was his big brother, not him, so facing Qi Wenqiang only made him feel awkward. He responded coolly: “…Mm.”

Qi Wenqiang seemed oblivious to his coldness and smiled as she showed concern: “If you’re not feeling well, you should rest at home for a few more days.”

Yu Pei was just about to speak when he saw Luo Changzhou’s figure appear at the classroom door. Luo Changzhou’s gaze met Yu Pei’s, then shifted to see Qi Wenqiang beside Yu Pei, and he immediately raised his eyebrows.

“Changzhou!” As soon as Yu Pei saw Luo Changzhou arrive, he immediately ignored Qi Wenqiang and rushed toward Luo Changzhou without even putting down his bag.

But this was in the classroom, so they couldn’t do anything too intimate. Luo Changzhou said “Mm”, then lowered his head to Yu Pei’s ear and said quietly: “You didn’t tell me you were coming to class.”

Yu Pei explained: “I wanted to give you a surprise.”

“Oh? It is quite a surprise.” Luo Changzhou said meaningfully, looking at Qi Wenqiang. “Don’t pay attention to her. Let’s go back to our seats, class is about to start.”

“Mm.” Yu Pei nodded and followed Luo Changzhou back to their seats.

Seeing that neither of them paid attention to her, Qi Wenqiang smiled and said nothing as she walked away.

Watching Yu Pei’s unconventional behavior, the classmates immediately understood that he probably really didn’t like Qi Wenqiang anymore. Some felt sorry. Qi Wenqiang now seemed to have feelings for Yu Pei, but Yu Pei was already indifferent to her.

After Yu Pei sat down, Tan Qiming indeed asked him: “Wow, Qi Wenqiang came to talk to you and you ignored her. You don’t like her anymore?“
