Chapter 43
Editor: Princess
Luo Changzhou’s room was exceptionally tidy. The curtains and bed sheets were both deep blue. Yu Pei remembered reading somewhere that people who frequently surrounded themselves with deep blue were melancholic and lonely, although they might also be gentle people.
Yu Pei thought Luo Changzhou was indeed a very gentle person, just like his eyes. Like the vast ocean that could embrace everything.
One entire wall of his room had been converted into a bookshelf, packed full of books. Yu Pei had expected those books to be world classics or obscure, difficult-to-understand professional texts, but when he looked closer, he discovered books like “Flower Growing Manual” and “Delicious Desserts” among the collection in one section.
He didn’t dare to disturb Luo Changzhou’s other books randomly, so he took down the “Complete Guide to Desserts”. When he opened it, he discovered a phoenix flower that had been turned into a dried flower bookmark inside the book.
It had become somewhat withered, and its color had dimmed considerably, but when he held it in his hands, he could almost still smell its fragrance from when it was in full bloom.
“Ah Pei.” Luo Changzhou entered the room carrying prepared food.
Yu Pei closed the book, turned around, and said to Luo Changzhou, “Changzhou, it turns out you also read these kinds of cooking books.”
“Of course. I need to learn how to make desserts so I can make them for you to eat in the future.” Luo Changzhou smiled and placed the tray in his hands on the low table. He beckoned to him, saying, “Come eat something.”
What Luo Changzhou had made was the same type of honey-filled egg pancake he had made for Yu Pei before. The eggs were shaped like hearts using molds, making them very adorable.
When Yu Pei took a bite, rich honey juice flowed out, traveling from the tip of his tongue all the way to his heart with sweetness.
“Is it delicious?” Luo Changzhou watched him like a chef awaiting a food critic’s evaluation.
Yu Pei generously gave the highest praise: “Delicious!”
Then he asked Luo Changzhou, “How do you make this kind of egg pancake? I had my family’s chef try to make it, but he couldn’t create this flavor.”
“Secret family recipe.” Luo Changzhou’s lips curved into a smile. “Just tell me whenever you want to eat it, and I’ll make it for you.”
Yu Pei finished the egg pancake with flushed cheeks.
When Luo Changzhou saw him put down his chopsticks, he pulled out a thick stack of test papers from under the table and said to him, “After eating something delicious, let’s start doing problems.”
Yu Pei: “…”
Although he had come to Luo Changzhou’s house under the pretense of studying, he had never expected Luo Changzhou to be so serious about it, not even engaging in secretly dating under the guise of studying.
However, since Teacher Luo had spoken, he certainly didn’t dare to be distracted. He silently took his homework out of his schoolbag and began working.
His grades had improved significantly with Luo Changzhou’s help. Now he could complete about half of the problems on test papers, no longer leaving large blank spaces as he had before.
While he was frowning and pondering a difficult problem, he heard Luo Changzhou, who was sitting beside him, let out a low chuckle.
He turned to look at him and asked curiously, “Changzhou, what are you laughing about?”
“I was remembering how you used to send me good night text messages when I was studying.” Luo Changzhou said. “Back then, I would think to myself, ‘This little troublemaker always sends me messages when I’m studying, disturbs me, and then goes to sleep contentedly, leaving me alone to think about him.’”
It would have been better if the topic of text messages hadn’t come up. Once mentioned, Yu Pei remembered that those messages he had sent were actually group messages… If Luo Changzhou ever found out about this…
He shivered slightly. Luo Changzhou noticed and asked, “Are you cold?”
“Not cold, not cold.” Yu Pei quickly waved his hands repeatedly, then pushed his test paper in front of Luo Changzhou with an ingratiating smile, saying, “Changzhou, I don’t know how to solve this problem.”
Luo Changzhou raised his eyebrows at this obvious attempt to change the subject, but didn’t say anything. He took Yu Pei’s test paper and began explaining the problem to him.
Yu Pei listened to Luo Changzhou’s murmured explanations while quietly moving closer to him, then moving even closer still.
He breathed in the faint woody scent from Luo Changzhou’s body, thinking that loving someone most deeply was probably like this. Existing like a shadow meant only for him, constantly staying by his side.
When dinner time approached, they had finished all of the week’s homework.
Yu Pei stretched and felt a strange sense of accomplishment, saying, “Ah Zheng will definitely be very happy when I get home tonight.”
Luo Changzhou picked up his comment, replying, “Because he can copy your homework?”
“Yes, yes.” Yu Pei nodded.
Luo Changzhou laughed and asked, “I need to go make dinner. Do you want to come downstairs with me?”
“Of course I do.” Yu Pei immediately got up from the carpet. He definitely didn’t want to stay upstairs alone. Accompanying Luo Changzhou to cook would be nice too.
Hearing this, Luo Changzhou took his hand immediately: “Then let’s go.”
The two of them walked to the kitchen together.
Only then did Yu Pei discover that in a truly happy family, even the kitchen would show traces of warmth.
Like someone entering a kitchen for the first time, he was endlessly curious about the various tools in the kitchen, constantly picking up different utensils and asking Luo Changzhou about them.
“Changzhou, what is this?”
“An egg beater.”
“What about this one? It looks so strange.”
“This is a scallion cutter. Be careful when you touch it. Don’t cut your hand.”
“Oh, okay.”
Yu Pei made two more rounds around the kitchen.
Then watching Luo Changzhou wearing an apron and cutting vegetables, he felt a certain part of his heart becoming ticklish. Unable to resist, he wandered behind Luo Changzhou and hugged his waist from behind, saying softly, “Changzhou, is there anything I can help you with?”
Luo Changzhou was stunned by Yu Pei’s sudden embrace for a moment, since this was a rare instance of Yu Pei taking the initiative to be affectionate.
Then hearing Yu Pei’s soft words, he put down the knife in his hand, abandoned the half-cut potato, turned around, and also embraced Yu Pei, pressing him against the counter. He said to Yu Pei, “Do you really want to help me with something?”
Yu Pei said, “Yes.”
Luo Changzhou raised his eyebrows as he looked at him and said, “My lips are a bit dry.”
Yu Pei pretended not to understand and said, “Then I’ll go get you some water.”
“I don’t want to drink water…” Luo Changzhou smiled, and the rest of his words disappeared between their connecting lips and tongues.
“Changzhou—” An unfamiliar female voice suddenly rang out from far to near, stopping abruptly at the kitchen doorway.
Yu Pei was momentarily stunned, then immediately pushed Luo Changzhou away.
Looking at the unfamiliar woman behind Luo Changzhou whose features somewhat resembled Luo Changzhou’s, his face turned white instantly as he stammered, “A-Aunt…”
Luo Changzhou also turned around and called out, “Mom.”
“Oh my.” The woman was also stunned like Yu Pei, but after hearing Luo Changzhou’s voice, she returned to normal and walked over to them with a smile.
She craned her neck to look at the half-cut potato on the cutting board, then looked at Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou, raising her eyebrows as she asked, “Are you cooking?”
Luo Changzhou also raised his eyebrows and said, “Yes.”
“Don’t cook anymore.” Mother Luo pushed aside the potato on the cutting board and placed the meat she was carrying on it. “Since Ah Pei is eating at our house today, let’s go have barbecue in the yard outside. Can Ah Pei eat spicy food?”
Yu Pei, suddenly called upon, was stunned for two seconds before realizing that Mother Luo was talking to him. He quickly answered, “Not really…”
“Then I’ll use less spice.” Mother Luo said.
Luo Changzhou added, “Ah Pei likes sweet food. Mom, bring out some honey sauce later.”
“Got it.” Mother Luo waved them out of the kitchen. “Changzhou, take Ah Pei to the yard and see if your dad has the charcoal ready. I’ll handle the sauces.”
“Can you really manage?” Luo Changzhou was very doubtful. “Don’t send Ah Pei to the hospital.”
“Don’t worry.” Mother Luo turned around helplessly and joked, “Mom won’t poison your little boyfriend.”
Hearing this, Yu Pei’s previously pale face regained some normal color. He asked Luo Changzhou quietly, “Changzhou, does Aunt know about us being together?”
Yu Pei had originally thought that Luo Changzhou’s parents wouldn’t be home and would return very late. When Mother Luo suddenly entered the kitchen and caught him and Luo Changzhou kissing, he had been terrified.
“Of course she knows.” Luo Changzhou told him. “I told them the day we got together.”
Yu Pei found this very strange and asked, “Won’t your father and mother object?”
Luo Changzhou’s lips curved into a smile as he said with certainty, “Don’t worry, they won’t. My father and mother are both very kind. You don’t need to be afraid of them.”
“How wonderful…” Yu Pei lowered his head and murmured softly.
If it were his parents… probably only his father would object, with the reason being that it would embarrass him. But if it were his mother, she would probably be very happy… Yu Pei thought in a daze.
“What’s wrong?” Luo Changzhou noticed Yu Pei’s expression wasn’t quite right and waved his hand in front of him.
“Nothing.” Yu Pei quickly said. “I was just thinking about when I should tell my big brother about this.”
“Tell him whenever you want to.” Luo Changzhou gently grasped his hand and led Yu Pei toward the yard.
In the center of the spacious yard, Father Luo had moved over a small stool and was sitting by the charcoal basin, fanning the fire with a fan in his hand.
When he saw Luo Changzhou and Yu Pei coming out hand in hand, he only glanced at them briefly before looking away, as if he hadn’t seen anything.
“Dad.” Luo Changzhou moved two stools over, gave one to Yu Pei, and they sat side by side next to Father Luo.
Father Luo pursed his lips and gave a perfunctory “Mm.”
However, Luo Changzhou deliberately pulled Yu Pei’s hand in front of his father and waved it, saying, “This is my boyfriend, Ah Pei.”
“I know.” Father Luo frowned and glared hard at him. “What, do you want to show off your relationship to me?”
Luo Changzhou smiled without saying anything.
Father Luo then focused his gaze on Yu Pei.
As soon as Yu Pei met Father Luo’s eyes, he immediately straightened his back, placed his hands properly on his knees, and called out very obediently, “Hello, Uncle. I’m Yu Pei.”
“Mm.” Father Luo didn’t say much to Yu Pei. After responding, he gestured with his chin toward Luo Changzhou, pointing to a brown small jar on the table nearby, saying, “There, the maple syrup your little aunt sent you. Why don’t you go make a cup for your boyfriend?”
“Alright.” This time Luo Changzhou agreed very readily. He got up with the maple syrup and left.
Yu Pei took a small sharp breath, his eyes widening as he watched Luo Changzhou walk away. Then only Father Luo and he were left in the yard.
