Chapter 58

It wasn’t until near the end of PE class that Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou emerged from that secluded spot. On the way back, Yu Pei was holding Luo Changzhou’s hand, though not tightly intertwined, just their index fingers hooked together, barely touching each other’s warm skin.

But perhaps because of the saying “ten fingers connected to the heart”, even this tiny bit of contact allowed Yu Pei to feel warmth slowly spreading from Luo Changzhou’s finger, as if two hearts were pressed together, beating at exactly the same rhythm.

However, when the first passerby appeared, Luo Changzhou released Yu Pei’s finger. The sudden separation didn’t give Yu Pei time to react. He instinctively chased after Luo Changzhou’s finger, as if he needed to grasp it in his palm to feel at ease.

Luo Changzhou didn’t avoid Yu Pei’s affection like Yu Pei had done earlier, but let Yu Pei take his finger again. Then he lowered his head and whispered softly in Yu Pei’s ear: “There are people around.”

Only then did Yu Pei realize they were still outside, and he quickly let go of Luo Changzhou’s hand, letting it hang helplessly at his side.

Seeing Yu Pei’s careful, cautious appearance made Luo Changzhou’s heart ache. He parted his lips, about to speak, when Gu Zheng, who had finally found them, spotted their figures and ran toward them. Stopping while panting, he asked: “Class is almost over, where did you two disappear to? I looked for you half the period and didn’t see a trace of either of you.”

“We went to…” Yu Pei hadn’t finished speaking when Gu Zheng noticed his flushed lips, then looked at Luo Changzhou’s, and immediately knew what they had been doing.

After all, he had dated before too, so what a couple in passionate love would do together when alone was obvious even without thinking. Gu Zheng suddenly regretted asking what they were doing. Was he hungry for dog food or something?

“I get it, you went to make out in the grove.” Gu Zheng raised his hand to stop Yu Pei’s unfinished words.

Yu Pei wanted to object but couldn’t find grounds for rebuttal, because it seemed that was exactly what happened. He and Luo Changzhou had indeed snuck off to the grove to do “bad things.”

That morning, Yu Pei had come to school in Zhang Geng’s car. After the Audi was totaled in the accident, Yu Qing had Zhang Geng switch to a Land Rover, saying it looked safer. Though the Land Rover was much more conspicuous than the Audi, Yu Pei didn’t refuse, wanting to put Yu Qing’s mind at ease.

However, Zhang Geng didn’t come to pick up Yu Pei at noon, because Yu Pei usually rode back with Gu Zheng at lunchtime. While Gu Zheng often went out to have fun after school in the afternoons, he generally still returned to the Yu residence for lunch.

Later, after Yu Pei’s car accident, Luo Changzhou visited him every day, going along with Gu Zheng to the Yu residence since it was on the way. But today Yu Pei had come to school for classes, so Gu Zheng had thought Luo Changzhou wouldn’t walk with them anymore. However, all the way to the bicycle area, Gu Zheng saw that Luo Changzhou was still walking with them, showing no intention of going to get his bicycle, so he asked: “Changzhou, why aren’t you going to get your bike?”

“I’m going back with you guys.” Luo Changzhou said.

Hearing this, Gu Zheng’s eyes immediately swept back and forth between Yu Pei and him like radar, full of suspicious looks.

Yu Pei confessed without being pressed: “Changzhou is just coming back to take a nap with me.”

“Oh—” Gu Zheng made an expression of understanding, drawing out the sound: “Sleep together.”

Yu Pei emphasized: “It’s just a nap…”

“Alright, alright, I know you’re lovey-dovey. I don’t want to eat any more dog food.” Gu Zheng started the car, suddenly remembering that after this week ended, National Day holiday would begin. Though their senior year break would be shorter than the underclassmen’s, there would still be time to celebrate Yu Pei’s birthday. “Ah Pei, next week is your birthday. Have you thought about how you want to celebrate?”

Yu Pei was startled by this. He had mentioned to Luo Changzhou before about inviting him to the Yu residence for his birthday, but as for how exactly to celebrate it, he really hadn’t thought about it.

Actually, thinking back carefully, he had never properly celebrated a birthday in his entire life, because his birthday could never satisfy everyone.

If Father Yu and Yu Qing remembered his birthday and bought him a birthday cake or other gifts, Mother Yu wouldn’t be very happy. She would sit at the table with a cold expression, staring at the cake as if it were a bomb. Only when Father Yu and Yu Qing were both too busy to come home in time, leaving just him and Mother Yu to celebrate his birthday, would Mother Yu’s face show a smile. Sometimes she would even personally cut a piece of cake and hand it to Yu Pei, gently saying “Happy birthday.”

But Yu Pei wasn’t happy. He couldn’t even eat the piece of cake Mother Yu handed him, only wanting to hide alone in his room.

Now that both Father Yu and Mother Yu were gone, this should be the first truly free birthday he would have.

But the older people got, the less they cared about their own birthdays. He was no longer like when he was small, looking forward to having every beloved family member gather around him on his birthday to sing “Happy Birthday” together.

And now, Yu Pei felt that receiving birthday wishes from Yu Qing and Gu Zheng on his birthday, plus a “Happy birthday” from Luo Changzhou, would be more than satisfying enough. He wouldn’t ask for anything more.

“I… I haven’t thought about it yet.” Yu Pei honestly shared his thoughts. He lowered his eyelashes, staring at his hands resting on his knees. “Everyone just having a simple meal together would be fine.”

“Wow, that’s way too simple! This is your eighteenth birthday!” Gu Zheng raised his voice in question. When he had turned eighteen, he had reserved an entire hotel and invited countless classmates and friends to his birthday party. If Yu Pei hadn’t been in the hospital at the time, he would have wanted to buy Yu Pei a plane ticket to come to his birthday.

“It wouldn’t be simple at all.” Yu Pei didn’t think there was anything wrong with his plan. He smiled, looking at Luo Changzhou and Gu Zheng as he said, “Having you guys come celebrate my birthday already makes me very happy.”

“Just me and Changzhou?” Gu Zheng pointed at Luo Changzhou then at himself. “That’s only two people.”

“There’s also my big brother and Uncle Zhuang and the others.” Yu Pei said. “That’s quite a few people.”

Gu Zheng was still conflicted: “What about classmates from school? Isn’t there anyone else you’d like to invite?” Gu Zheng felt that an eighteenth birthday should be celebrated with lots of excitement. Though Yu Pei’s relationships with classmates hadn’t been great before, if he could invite many people for his birthday and make it livelier, wouldn’t that be better?

However, Yu Pei shook his head: “No one else.”

His relationships with classmates were nowhere near the level where he would invite them to his home for his birthday. He also wasn’t as outgoing and open as Gu Zheng, so having too many people at his birthday would probably make him feel uncomfortable, even constrained.

“Then—”

Gu Zheng was about to say more when Luo Changzhou suddenly interrupted him, saying to Yu Pei: “How about celebrating your birthday at my place?”

“Huh?” Both Gu Zheng and Yu Pei looked at Luo Changzhou.

Luo Changzhou reached out to touch Yu Pei’s hair, saying softly: “I mean, celebrate at Sugar Maple Resort. The maple leaves are starting to turn red lately, and we could have fun at the outdoor hot spring area.”

“Right! Changzhou’s family runs a hot spring resort!” Gu Zheng slammed his fist on the steering wheel, startling Yu Pei into telling him to drive properly. “Ah Pei, didn’t you say you wanted to have barbecue with your big brother again? If we go to Luo Changzhou’s place, we can not only have barbecue but also soak in hot springs!”

If Luo Changzhou hadn’t mentioned it, Gu Zheng would have almost forgotten about this. He had seen many friends he knew in South City posting photos on social media of them visiting Sugar Maple Resort. The scenery there was absolutely beautiful both day and night, and even he wanted to go play there. What’s more, Sugar Maple Hot Spring Resort was run by Luo Changzhou’s family, so going there would definitely come with extra perks, right?

“How about it?” Luo Changzhou asked Yu Pei, bringing his lips close to Yu Pei’s ear and speaking in a low voice, as if trying to entice him. “Come celebrate at my place. I’ll definitely prepare an unforgettable birthday for Ah Pei.”

Yu Pei felt there was something strange about the way Luo Changzhou said this. Before he could answer, Luo Changzhou pulled him into his arms and asked again by his ear: “Mm?”

Yu Pei was dazed by his low, husky voice and answered without thinking: “Okay.”

Luo Changzhou smiled and lowered his head to kiss his earlobe.

Gu Zheng sat alone in the front seat. After seeing their interaction, he adjusted the rearview mirror to the side, feeling like he had been fed dog food before even eating lunch.

During this period, Luo Changzhou came to the Yu residence so frequently—almost more often than Yu Qing, who spent all his time at the office and rarely came home—that nearly all the maids knew that their little young master had a blue-eyed mixed-race boyfriend. As the head of the family, Yu Qing showed no signs of objection either, so without Yu Pei needing to ask the chef, the chef instinctively prepared an extra portion when cooking.

During lunch, Gu Zheng watched as Luo Changzhou single-handedly took care of serving Yu Pei rice, ladling soup for Yu Pei, and picking up food for Yu Pei. Since Yu Qing hadn’t come home for lunch today, Yu Pei wasn’t very shy and actually let Luo Changzhou feed him!

Gu Zheng looked down at his own bowl with only plain rice, then at Yu Pei’s bowl stuffed full of dishes, and increasingly felt that he too needed to find a new girlfriend soon.

As a result, Gu Zheng was busy thinking about his new girlfriend situation and didn’t sleep during afternoon class either, propping up his chin and letting his mind wander until Yu Pei quietly called his name, bringing him back to reality.

“What’s wrong?” Gu Zheng asked him.

Yu Pei turned slightly toward him, glanced at him, then looked toward the podium, telling him: “Teacher Tian Mi called your name.”

Gu Zheng was startled at first, following Yu Pei’s gaze to the podium. After meeting Tian Mi’s smiling face, he immediately stood up: “Teacher Tian…”

“What was Student Gu Zheng thinking about?” Tian Mi’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled. She didn’t look angry, nor did she mention that Gu Zheng still hadn’t turned in his homework. She simply said, “Were you thinking about the content in the textbook? Then please have Student Gu Zheng translate this cloze passage.”

Gu Zheng looked down at the English test paper in his hands, full of English text, and immediately felt his vision go black.
