Chapter 54
“What are you thinking about?” Luo Changzhou asked when he saw Yu Pei sitting at the table in a daze, not eating.
Yu Pei snapped back to reality and shook his head, saying, “Nothing.” After speaking, he reached out to serve himself rice.
Unlike fractures, elbow dislocations could usually function normally after being reset, however activity had to be limited before complete healing to avoid worsening the injury.
Although Yu Pei’s right elbow joint had been reset, it was still secured with a joint brace, making movement very inconvenient. Seeing this, Luo Changzhou immediately stood up and took the rice spoon and Yu Pei’s bowl, saying, “Let me do it.”
“Oh.” Yu Pei had to sit back down.
However, Luo Changzhou didn’t just serve Yu Pei rice. He also helped pick dishes for him, all flavors that Yu Pei loved.
Yu Qing looked up at them, noticing Luo Changzhou’s practiced movements. This was clearly not the first time he was doing such things. He raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Gu Zheng was focused on eating his food and so paid no attention to what Luo Changzhou was doing. Yu Pei noticed his big brother’s expression, and though he said nothing, Yu Pei felt an inexplicable shame as if he were showing affection publicly. His ears turned red as he took the bowl Luo Changzhou handed him and buried his head in eating.
**
After lunch, Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou returned to his room.
Yu Pei hadn’t forgotten what Luo Changzhou had done in the room before lunch, nor had he forgotten that repeated question: “Can we continue later?”
So after entering the room, he didn’t dare look directly at Luo Changzhou’s face. He sat on the edge of the bed with his head down, thought for a moment, then asked, “Changzhou, do you want to take a nap?”
Because he was recovering from injury, he usually either lay down or slept, with almost no physical activities. Even though Yu Pei usually had the habit of afternoon naps, he had slept too much during the day and couldn’t fall asleep right away. He patted the pillow beside him and said softly to Luo Changzhou, “I can share half my bed with you.”
“I won’t sleep.” Luo Changzhou replied directly, walking in front of Yu Pei. “I don’t have the habit of taking naps.”
But Yu Pei still kept his eyes down, not looking at him. He glanced around, and when his gaze swept over Luo Changzhou’s backpack placed nearby, some images flashed through his mind at that moment. He remembered how Luo Changzhou used to tutor him during PE classes and breaks, teaching him problems. So Yu Pei suddenly asked, “Then are you going to tutor me?”
“Is that really my image in your mind – someone who loves studying?” Luo Changzhou said helplessly. “Even with such a good opportunity to come to your house, I should tutor you?”
As Luo Changzhou spoke, he bent down, supporting himself with both hands on the bed, enveloping Yu Pei entirely in his shadow. Staring into his eyes with a low voice, he asked again, “Hmm?”
Now Yu Pei could no longer avoid his gaze. Luo Changzhou’s deep blue eyes were right before him, incredibly close. The colors in his irises were like the paint he had once used for a starry night sky – blue and gray reflecting each other, deep as if they could see through his soul.
Luo Changzhou’s words seemed to carry meanings that couldn’t be pondered too deeply, because thinking about them would reveal many unspeakable implications. So Yu Pei could only stammer, “Then what do you… want to do?”
Yu Pei had used mouthwash after eating – probably strawberry-flavored. When Luo Changzhou moved closer, he could smell the faint strawberry fragrance in his breath. That scent mingled with his own breathing, gradually becoming warm and rapid from its initial calm.
For some reason, Luo Changzhou suddenly remembered a scene from before they were together – when he asked Yu Pei if he wanted tea, and Yu Pei directly took a sip from his cup.
Yu Pei had beautiful lips – diamond-shaped with a pointed yet rounded cupid’s bow, colored like blooming roses or freshly made berry jam. Even his breath was sweet.
Back then, besides being stunned and bewildered, he had harbored a secret thought deep in his mind – and now, he had the chance to act on that secret thought.
So Luo Changzhou smiled and whispered in his ear, “Let’s finish what we didn’t complete earlier.”
After saying this, he leaned down gently toward Yu Pei.
He deliberately slowed his movements, only gradually increasing the pressure of the kiss after touching those soft lips. His hands were placed on either side of Yu Pei, so there was no support behind Yu Pei – he had to tilt his head back to keep from falling backward.
Though it wasn’t their first kiss, Yu Pei was still so shy. The moment their lips touched, he closed his eyes, his long lashes trembling lightly as his ears and neck suddenly flushed pink.
Yu Pei’s lips were soft and warm. Luo Changzhou tentatively extended his tongue tip to lightly trace his lower lip, and Yu Pei foolishly parted his lips, his tongue resting quietly between his teeth. When Luo Changzhou gently touched it, that soft, warm tongue tip retreated slightly, as if afraid of his touch.
When Luo Changzhou pressed forward a bit more, Yu Pei’s nose touched his face. His nose tip was cool, but his exhaled breath was moist and warm, carrying sweet fragrance that felt ticklish on the skin, like a small flame burning directly into Luo Changzhou’s heart, turning all thoughts in his mind into chaotic confusion.
So Luo Changzhou no longer supported himself on the bed. He raised his right hand to gently cradle the back of Yu Pei’s head, while his other hand circled Yu Pei’s waist, pulling him closer. Luo Changzhou didn’t close his eyes, so he could clearly see the person he deeply loved now resting obediently in his arms, like a cat that had retracted all its claws, showing only its soft pink-white belly. He looked at Yu Pei – his trembling lashes, pale face, rosy lips – everything about him was impacting Luo Changzhou’s heart like a soft carving knife, etching an unfading silhouette on both his heart and soul.
He gently tasted the moist, sweet breath from Yu Pei’s lips, but that breath was like scorching desert wind flowing through his respiratory tract, making his throat dry and tight, evaporating all his reason.
Before meeting Yu Pei, Luo Changzhou had never discovered he was such a person without self-control. Yu Pei had just asked why he didn’t text him that morning, whether he hadn’t missed him. But only Luo Changzhou knew – it wasn’t that he didn’t miss Yu Pei, but because he missed him too much, he didn’t dare to text.
He was afraid that once he texted Yu Pei, that longing would be like flood waters bursting through a dam, roaring away with all his reason. He would lose control of himself and be unable to think of anything besides Yu Pei.
Feeling his body growing hotter, Luo Changzhou left Yu Pei’s lips before the beast of lost reason could break free from its cage. He closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against Yu Pei’s, laughing softly.
“Why are you laughing again…” Yu Pei opened his eyes to look at him, thinking Luo Changzhou was probably laughing at his clumsy kissing technique.
“I’m laughing.” Luo Changzhou said, “because you just told me you wanted to go to school.”
“Mm…” Yu Pei still didn’t understand what was funny about that. “Because I can see you at school.”
“Because you want to go, but now I don’t want to anymore.” Luo Changzhou gently kissed his confused eyes, his voice hoarse. “I want to stay home with you…”
Just as he had worried that morning, Yu Pei was indeed the eternal law that transcended all his rules – unchangeable. When it came to him, all principles and rules could be disregarded, all yielding to him.
Luo Changzhou was still smiling, his blue eyes gentle like captured summer breezes: “I especially like Ah Pei, so I want to be able to see you all the time too.”
Perhaps when one truly loved someone to the extreme, they couldn’t bear to be separated from them, couldn’t bear not seeing them. Only when their figure appeared in their sight at all times did they feel at peace and satisfied.
Yu Pei stared at Luo Changzhou in a daze. He probably didn’t know how infatuated his gaze was at that moment, yet he was still thinking he couldn’t let Luo Changzhou skip class, so he said, “No, that won’t do…”
“I’ve changed my mind.” Luo Changzhou held Yu Pei, pressed him down as he turned over, and they both fell onto the bed together. “I want to take a nap with you.”
Yu Pei was caught off guard and brought down by Luo Changzhou. After a moment of dizziness, Luo Changzhou’s figure disappeared from his sight, but his left ear was pressed right against Luo Changzhou’s chest, hearing his heartbeat.
That heart was beating very fast, powerfully striking against Luo Changzhou’s ribs, continuously transmitting strong beating sounds.
“Do you know? There’s a song with lyrics that go like this—” Luo Changzhou held him, his chin resting on his head, “—‘My heart shouts “I’m alive” 70 times per minute, but when I’m with you, it quickens its pace slightly and shouts “I love you” 110 times.’”
“Did you hear it?” Luo Changzhou asked softly. “My confession.”
Yu Pei tightened his fingers, gripping Luo Changzhou’s collar tightly, and replied, “I heard it. I also like Changzhou, very much.”
“Sleep now.” Luo Changzhou gently stroked his head.
Although Yu Pei felt he wasn’t sleepy, somehow, with his eyes closed while leaning against Luo Changzhou’s embrace, he gradually fell asleep.
When he woke up, Luo Changzhou was already gone.
He knew Luo Changzhou must have gone to class and, reluctant to wake him, had left quietly.
Yu Pei reached out to touch where he had just been lying. There was no warmth left there, but Yu Pei still left his warm sleeping spot to go to that place, burying his face in the pillow and inhaling what seemed to be the faint scent Luo Changzhou had left behind. That scent was just like him – gentle and reserved, like cedar fragrance, comforting.
Yu Pei turned over, his gaze falling on the pot of Tagimoucia flower on the balcony table that Luo Changzhou had given him.
It was now late September, past its blooming period, and the flowers had all withered. But Yu Pei knew that when next year came, it would bloom again. Then, every petal that bloomed would be Luo Changzhou’s silent confession to him.
Just like his heartbeat.
