Chapter 52
With Yu Pei hospitalized, when Luo Changzhou went to class on Monday morning, the boy who always walked beside him was gone. There was no one to secretly hold hands with at his desk either. Gu Zheng sat in his seat, looking at the empty spot in front of him, feeling rather listless.
Tan Qiming noticed that Yu Pei hadn’t come to class and couldn’t help but feel surprised.
But actually, if this had happened before, frequently skipping class should have been Yu Pei’s normal state. Back then his health was poor. He was very fat and had asthma, often unable to catch his breath and having attacks, so he frequently took leave to rest at home. However, since the start of this semester, Yu Pei had not only lost weight but hadn’t missed a single class. If not for his absence today, Tan Qiming would have almost forgotten how much Yu Pei used to love skipping school.
Now almost everyone in class knew that Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou were good friends, since the two were inseparable every day. So when Tan Qiming saw Yu Pei was absent, he directly asked Luo Changzhou: “Changzhou, why didn’t Yu Pei come to class?”
While looking at the book in his hands, Luo Changzhou replied: “He was in a car accident. He needs to rest for a few days before he can come back to class.”
“A car accident?!” Tan Qiming exclaimed. “Is he badly injured? Should we go visit him at the hospital?”
“It’s not serious. He should be discharged today, but he hit his head and has a mild concussion, so he still can’t come to school,” Luo Changzhou said.
However, his words were overheard by Qi Wenqiang, who was handing out test papers and happened to walk by. She turned around and walked over to Luo Changzhou, asking him: “Changzhou, has Yu Pei been discharged already?”
Luo Changzhou looked up at her, his ice-blue eyes showing no emotion, and said flatly: “Yes.”
Qi Wenqiang sighed and said: “When I went to the hospital yesterday, I saw his wound was still bleeding. How could he be discharged already?”
“The wound was still bleeding?” When Tan Qiming heard this, he felt Yu Pei’s injuries shouldn’t be light. How did it become a casual “not serious” when Luo Changzhou described it?
“Yes, and he looked very pale, couldn’t even get out of bed,” Qi Wenqiang continued. Every word she said was true, but without any explanation, her words made Yu Pei sound like he was severely injured and bedridden. “Why don’t we go to his house to see him?”
When Qi Wenqiang and Tan Qiming spoke, they didn’t deliberately lower their voices. The surrounding classmates perked up their ears when they heard Yu Pei had been in a car accident, and soon most of the class knew that Yu Pei’s absence today was due to a car accident.
Yu Pei now had quite a few people paying attention to him in class. After all, his beautiful appearance after losing weight was right there for all to see, and good-looking people are pleasing to the eye wherever they are. When everyone heard he’d been in a car accident, they immediately imagined him looking sickly and pitiful, and echoed Qi Wenqiang’s words, saying they should report to the homeroom teacher and all go visit him at home together.
Seeing this, Luo Changzhou frowned, and his gaze toward Qi Wenqiang turned half-cold. But before he could speak, Gu Zheng, who had been lying on his back desk watching this drama unfold, shouted: “Go where? You’re not allowed to go! The doctor said Ah Pei needs to rest quietly. Wouldn’t you all be disturbing him?”
Gu Zheng had been like a bully at his previous school, and hadn’t changed much since coming to Nanhua High School. He didn’t care about his relationships with classmates and directly told them they weren’t allowed to visit Yu Pei.
When he shouted, the classmates fell silent, staring at him with somewhat surprised expressions.
However, Qi Wenqiang showed no embarrassment on her face at all. She still spoke softly: “We just want to show concern for classmate Yu Pei.”
“Oh, I live with Ah Pei. I’ll pass along your concern for you,” Gu Zheng said, propping his chin up.
Since he’d said this much, everyone couldn’t really force their way to Yu Pei’s house, and besides, time was indeed tight for senior year students. After thinking about it, the classmates didn’t insist further. Tan Qiming turned around to send Yu Pei a caring text message, and Qi Wenqiang, seeing no one was continuing to support her, smiled and went back to handing out test papers.
“Impressive,” Gu Zheng said, looking at Qi Wenqiang’s powerful ability to maintain her composure without changing expression.
Although he didn’t like Qi Wenqiang, he really had to admit she was genuinely composed. With this kind of patience, even if she couldn’t hook Yu Qing, she could probably still catch some rich second-generation guy who was stupid but wealthy. Unfortunately, her ambitions were a bit big. If she was going to fish, she wanted to catch the best, so she set her sights on Yu Qing.
After dealing with Qi Wenqiang, Gu Zheng lay down on his desk and slept until Luo Changzhou came to wake him up when school ended.
“Let’s go,” Luo Changzhou stood at the desk, looking expressionlessly at Gu Zheng, whose face had text imprinted on it from sleeping on his textbook.
“Alright—” Gu Zheng replied while stretching, then pulled his car keys from his pocket, dangling them on his finger as he walked out.
Gu Zheng drove a Porsche, its silver-white body sleek and luxurious, parked in a hotel parking lot outside the school gate. To drive his precious car every day, Gu Zheng paid quite a bit in parking fees to the hotel for this fixed parking spot.
Since he was going to Yu Pei’s house with Gu Zheng, Luo Changzhou didn’t ride his bicycle. Gu Zheng didn’t know that Luo Changzhou’s family was also wealthy. He thought this young man who rode his bicycle to school every day would at least gasp in admiration when seeing his luxury car. Instead, after Gu Zheng opened the car door, Luo Changzhou simply got in without saying a word.
“Ugh, that Qi Wenqiang is really annoying, like a drama queen,” Gu Zheng was naturally a chatterbox, but Luo Changzhou was very quiet. Throughout the journey, Gu Zheng kept trying to find topics to discuss, but Luo Changzhou responded very little. “Can’t understand how Ah Pei used to like her.”
As soon as these words left his mouth, Gu Zheng felt he’d said something wrong. He sneakily glanced at Luo Changzhou, saw his expression was indeed not very good, and quickly changed the subject: “Ah Pei should like you! You cook so well. Ah Pei has a chef at home. I used to think his cooking was pretty good, but after tasting your food yesterday, I think you’re the real chef.”
Hearing Gu Zheng praise him like this, Luo Changzhou raised his eyebrows and said: “I’ve finished today’s homework. I’ll give it to you when we get to Ah Pei’s house.”
“Good brother, good brother.” Gu Zheng felt deeply comforted by Luo Changzhou’s understanding and chuckled twice.
The Yu family residence wasn’t particularly far from Nanhua High School, so they arrived after a short drive.
Yu Pei had returned home from the hospital with Yu Qing that morning. When he first got home, his phone kept buzzing non-stop. It happened to be during class break, and Yu Pei thought it was Luo Changzhou sending him messages. He excitedly opened his phone only to find not a single one was from him. They were all caring messages from classmates who had learned about his car accident.
If this had been before, Yu Pei would definitely have felt incredibly happy, because his classmates were finally starting to care about him too. Though Yu Pei still felt quite pleased now, the fact that Luo Changzhou hadn’t sent him a message left him feeling somewhat disappointed, even though they were already together and Luo Changzhou had spent the whole day with him at the hospital yesterday.
People were always like this. When they possessed something too precious, they would become anxious about losing it. Yu Pei felt that Luo Changzhou was his most precious treasure, and even gripping him tightly in his hands, he would still fear his disappearance.
Yu Pei lay in bed, holding his phone and absent-mindedly scrolling through the messages from classmates, but his mind was wondering whether Luo Changzhou and Gu Zheng were out of class yet, when they would arrive home. Uncle Zhuang still didn’t know about him and Luo Changzhou being together. How should he introduce Luo Changzhou to Uncle Zhuang when they met?
Perhaps because his longing was too intense, when the sound of Gu Zheng’s unfamiliar car reached Yu Pei’s ears, he froze for a moment, then immediately scrambled up from bed. Moving too quickly, he had to lean against the wall for a moment to steady himself.
He remembered clearly the sound each car in the house made when returning home, because he had once desperately wanted to hear the sounds of Yu Qing and his father coming home. Like before when hearing the person he missed return home, he ran to the balcony. Though it was only a few meters distance, the disorientation and directional confusion caused by his concussion made it feel as difficult as crossing mountains and rivers. Without waiting to recover a bit more, he stretched his neck to look toward the parking area.
Nanhua High School’s uniform was red. Yu Pei could see two red dots approaching from afar. When he could finally make out the face clearly, he smiled and raised his hand, excitedly calling out: “Changzhou—”
Hearing Yu Pei’s voice, Luo Changzhou’s face, which had shown no expression all day, finally revealed a gentle smile. He also raised his hand in response to Yu Pei’s call and slightly quickened his pace, as if urgently wanting to see Yu Pei.
Gu Zheng knew that people in the heat of passion would have even stronger feelings after a brief separation. Without waiting for Luo Changzhou to ask, he directly led him to Yu Pei’s room, then closed the door and left, giving the space to the two of them.
Since he was at home, Yu Pei wore only a thin set of cream-colored pure cotton pajamas with cotton slippers on his feet. His form swaying unsteadily, he walked to Luo Changzhou’s front. After steadying himself, he wanted to reach out and hug him, but feared his behavior might be too bold. He could only lower his eyes slightly, staring at the floor and saying softly: “Changzhou… you’re finally here.”
The word “finally” was special. In Chinese vocabulary it meant “at last”, carrying a deep emotion of having waited for a long time. Which, used here, inadvertently, it revealed Yu Pei’s longing.
This longing was read by Luo Changzhou, so he took the initiative to gently embrace Yu Pei, his lips kissing the top of his head once. A thousand words converged into one sentence: “Mm, I’m here.”
“I really want to go to school. At home I can’t see you,” Yu Pei hugged his waist, pressing against his neck and saying in a muffled voice. “When you’re in class, I can’t even chat with you…”
If Luo Changzhou couldn’t detect the faint sourness in Yu Pei’s words, he’d be a fool. So he couldn’t help but laugh.
Hearing his laughter, Yu Pei lifted his head from his embrace, looking at him with grievance. When Luo Changzhou had food poisoning, he frequently sent messages during class breaks, but now when he was home resting after a car accident, Luo Changzhou didn’t send him a single message. All the classmates had sent several, but he hadn’t sent even one!
