Chapter 49

The moderate massage at his temples did ease some of Yu Pei’s dizziness, but he still couldn’t open his eyes. The disorientation from his concussion made everything appear to be spinning.

Luo Changzhou helped Yu Pei lie back down on the bed, and only then did Yu Pei belatedly realize his head was wrapped in bandages.

Seeing Yu Pei’s pale face as he lay sickly in bed, Gu Zheng’s shoulders sagged with a sigh. His peripheral vision caught sight of the thermal food container Luo Changzhou had brought, sitting on the bedside table, and he quickly said, “Ah Pei, now that you’re awake, you should eat something. You haven’t had anything since yesterday.”

Yu Pei’s stomach was indeed empty, but he felt too nauseous to have any appetite. Just as he was about to refuse, he heard Gu Zheng complaining, “This is pigeon soup that Changzhou made for you. I asked him to let me have some, but he wouldn’t even give me a taste.”

Luo Changzhou didn’t speak, but even with his eyes closed, Yu Pei could sense he was right beside him. He reached out and found Luo Changzhou’s hand resting on the bed’s edge, gripping his fingers tightly as he called out, “Changzhou…”

“Mm, I’m here.” Luo Changzhou gestured to Gu Zheng, commandeering him to open the thermal container and hand over the soup bowl inside. Then he helped Yu Pei sit up, saying, “Come on, I’ll feed you the soup.”

Yu Pei had thought he wouldn’t have much appetite, but Luo Changzhou’s pigeon soup was indeed very fresh, without any fishy smell. The warm broth falling into his stomach immediately eased that uncomfortable hunger pangs.

After all, sometimes dizziness wasn’t necessarily from head trauma. It could also be from low blood sugar. Once there was something in his stomach, his blood sugar levels rose, and Yu Pei tried opening his eyes, finding he wasn’t as dizzy as before. He half-leaned against the pillow, letting Luo Changzhou feed him the soup.

Gu Zheng couldn’t sit still. Seeing that Yu Pei could sit up and eat, and that his injuries didn’t seem too serious, he started talking again: “Ah Pei, you have no idea how scared I was when Uncle Zhuang called me last night saying you and Brother Yu had been in a car accident. How did you end up in an accident? Did they catch whoever hit you?”

Yu Pei recalled the events of last night, frowning as he said, “It seems like… no car hit us.”

Gu Zheng found this strange: “If no car hit you, then how did you have an accident? Brother Yu’s driving skills aren’t that bad, right? He couldn’t have just driven straight into a tree with you in the car, could he?”

Yu Pei remained silent, because Yu Qing seemed to have done exactly that, driven straight into a tree with him in the car. He asked Gu Zheng, “Ah Zheng, when you got up this morning, didn’t you see my big brother?”

“That’s right.” Gu Zheng pointed to another bed in the room, saying, “Brother Yu’s bed is that one. I still saw him there when I went to sleep last night, but when I woke up this morning, he was gone. Then Changzhou came with soup to see you.”

“When I arrived, I saw Mr. Yu in the elevator.” Luo Changzhou glanced at both of them before speaking. “He greeted me and said he had some business to take care of, and that he’d be back around noon.”

As soon as Luo Changzhou finished speaking, both Yu Pei and Gu Zheng turned their gazes toward him. Gu Zheng couldn’t help but ask, “Changzhou, have you really never met Brother Yu before?”

Luo Changzhou raised his eyebrows slightly, saying, “No.”

Gu Zheng muttered under his breath, “I feel like Brother Yu and you are quite familiar with each other…”

Meanwhile, Yu Pei’s heartbeat began to gradually quicken again. That thought from before resurfaced in his mind. Could his big brother have already discovered that he and Luo Changzhou were together?

“Let’s not talk about that.” Gu Zheng waved his hand, wearing an expression that screamed “I’m hiding a big secret, come ask me about it.” He said mysteriously, “Do you know who I ran into at the hospital last night?”

Yu Pei took a sip of the soup Luo Changzhou was feeding him, then followed Gu Zheng’s lead: “Who?”

“Qi Wenqiang!” Gu Zheng slapped his thigh. “It seems like she was the one who saved you and Brother Yu.”

Yu Pei nearly choked on his soup, coughing twice as his eyes widened: “Really?”

“Mm.” Gu Zheng said, “Uncle Zhuang said their family was originally planning to go to Sugar Maple Manor for fun, but they encountered your accident on the road and helped call the ambulance.”

“Yu Pei—” Speak of the devil—just as Gu Zheng finished that sentence, Qi Wenqiang’s soft voice came from the doorway: “Are you feeling better?”

All three looked toward the door to see Qi Wenqiang standing there with a fruit basket in hand, smiling sweetly. Her gaze swept over Luo Changzhou beside Yu Pei as she said, “Changzhou is here too.”

Luo Changzhou looked at her expressionlessly and replied, “Yes, I came to see Ah Pei.”

“Me too.” Qi Wenqiang walked in, placing the fruit basket she’d brought on a nearby surface. Her eyes scanned around the room as if looking for someone.

Since it was the weekend, no one in the room was wearing school uniforms. Qi Wenqiang wore a white floral long dress, her black hair falling straight and smooth behind her back. Her features were delicate and gentle, making her look pure and beautiful.

Although Yu Pei had once been hurt by her comments about him, that was all in the past. Qi Wenqiang’s family had helped call the ambulance for him and his big brother last night, and today she’d come to the hospital to see him. Yu Pei was still grateful to her, so he smiled and said, “Thank you for coming to see me.”

“You’re welcome.” Qi Wenqiang smiled back, pulling up a chair to sit by the window. She didn’t seem to be in any hurry to leave. Looking at Yu Pei’s arm, she said, “Yu Pei, after this accident, you probably won’t be able to attend classes for a while, right? Do you want me to help take notes for you?”

Her suggestion made everyone look at her even more strangely. Gu Zheng even snuck a glance at Luo Changzhou, wondering if Qi Wenqiang had suddenly discovered Yu Pei’s good looks and was here to steal him away.

Before Yu Pei could respond, Luo Changzhou directly refused Qi Wenqiang’s offer: “No need, I’ll help Ah Pei take notes.”

Qi Wenqiang added, “That’s true, you two have such a good relationship. Luo Changzhou will definitely help you take notes.”

After she said this, the room fell into silence. Both Gu Zheng and Luo Changzhou had just transferred to the school this semester and weren’t familiar with her at all, so they couldn’t find any topics to discuss.

Although Yu Pei had studied alongside Qi Wenqiang for almost three years, because of his former “crush,” he now felt awkward and didn’t know what to say, especially with his current boyfriend Luo Changzhou right there.

Even though Luo Changzhou showed no reaction now and had no expression on his face, Yu Pei knew he definitely wasn’t happy about Qi Wenqiang’s presence.

However, despite no one talking to her, Qi Wenqiang didn’t feel awkward at all. Her gaze swept over the neatly folded bedding behind Gu Zheng, and she asked with apparent casualness, “Huh, Yu Pei, has your big brother been discharged? I saw he had quite a large wound on his head yesterday too.”

Yu Pei hadn’t seen Yu Qing since waking up, and everything he knew about his big brother’s injuries came from what Gu Zheng had told him. Hearing Qi Wenqiang say this made him inevitably worried.

After all, if Yu Qing had also injured his head like him, there would be a possibility of concussion, requiring bed rest.

Qi Wenqiang seemed to see through his concern, smiling as she said, “Why don’t you call and ask?”

“No need. Brother Yu’s injuries aren’t serious. I saw him last night too.” Before Yu Pei could speak, Gu Zheng had already responded. He had a very poor impression of Qi Wenqiang, and regardless of whether she’d come to the hospital genuinely to visit Yu Pei or for some other reason, he didn’t want to see her.

Being targeted by Gu Zheng like this, Qi Wenqiang still smiled: “Is that so? Maybe I didn’t see clearly.”

After she said this, the room fell silent again. If it were an ordinary person, they probably would have said goodbye in such an awkward atmosphere by now.

But Qi Wenqiang remained composed, even starting to peel an apple. After finishing, she asked Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou if they wanted any. Upon receiving negative responses, she leisurely cut the apple into small pieces and placed them on a nearby plate, giving off an air of planning to stay in the room until the end of time.

Watching her cut a large apple into countless small pieces, Yu Pei felt that Qi Wenqiang was deliberately killing time here, as if she were waiting for someone.

And the only person who would come to this room was Yu Qing.

But Yu Pei also felt it was impossible for Qi Wenqiang to be waiting for Yu Qing. She and his big brother didn’t even know each other. What reason would she have to wait for him?

Although he found it strange, Yu Pei still borrowed Gu Zheng’s phone. His own phone hadn’t been touched since last night’s accident and was dead. Using Gu Zheng’s phone, he sent Yu Qing a text message: [Big brother, this is Ah Pei. I’m awake. Where are you?]

When Yu Qing received this text from Yu Pei, his other hand was holding the drug test report the doctor had given him.

In the cup of water he’d brought yesterday, there were residues of a drug called “olanzapine.”

This was a prescription medication used to treat schizophrenia. When dissolved in water, it was colorless and would only add a slight sweet taste to the water.

The doctor had told Yu Qing: “Mr. Yu, this medication has quite obvious side effects when taken for the first time. The effects usually kick in within two hours of taking it, generally manifesting as drowsiness, lethargy, and dizziness. That’s why we usually recommend patients take it at night, and they can’t drive after taking it. Based on the test results, the dosage you took yesterday was already somewhat excessive.”

Yu Qing asked further, “Are those the only side effects? No headaches or anything like that?”

“Headaches?” The doctor said, “It’s possible, but only appears in a small number of patients.”

The doctor paused, then asked Yu Qing, “Mr. Yu, are you certain your headaches are due to the medication?”

Yu Qing looked at the doctor but didn’t speak.

“Early-stage schizophrenia can cause headaches, dizziness, memory blackouts, unexplained spots of light appearing before the eyes, or auditory and visual hallucinations.” The doctor sighed and said, “If you’re experiencing these symptoms, I recommend you get a comprehensive examination.”

“I will.” After a moment of silence, Yu Qing replied.

Then he opened the doctor’s door and walked out. He looked at the text Yu Pei had sent him, his finger lifting and lowering over the keypad. In the end, he didn’t compose a reply message, but instead went to the outpatient registration desk and signed up for a psychiatric specialist consultation.
