Chapter 47

Editor: Princess

The ambulance drove into the hospital with its siren blaring. Yu Pei was rushed off by doctors for X-rays and to have his arm set, while Yu Qing was placed in the emergency room to have his wound bandaged. He called Uncle Zhuang to come over while explaining the accident situation to the police who had just arrived.

The police examined the dash cam footage from their Audi and found that the accident wasn’t Yu Qing’s fault. They had been driving in the proper lane when the other car, due to excessive speed, nearly collided with Yu Qing while overtaking aggressively. That’s why Yu Qing had to swerve sharply, crashing into the roadside barrier. The situation shown on the dash cam was consistent with what the family who had saved them had described.

The other car probably figured that since there was no actual contact between their vehicle and Yu Qing’s, they bore no responsibility, so they didn’t even get out to check on Yu Qing and Yu Pei’s condition.

But Yu Qing felt that there was more to it than that.

He sat expressionlessly on the hospital bench, his face, hands, and clothes still bearing dried bloodstains. Some his own, some Yu Pei’s.

He remained sitting in silence like that until the family who had finished giving their statements came to see him. Only then did his face show a smile as he thanked them warmly.

The man heard his words and said with a laugh: “No need to thank us. We were also planning to go to Sugar Maple Manor to play, and we just happened to encounter your situation.”

“I really must thank you all.” Yu Qing said. “And we’ve disrupted your vacation time too.”

Today was Saturday, and the family had probably planned to stay overnight at Sugar Maple Manor and return on Sunday, but they had been delayed until evening because of the accident.

The man was about to say it was nothing, that they could go another time, when the girl beside him spoke up: “It’s fine. Yu Pei is my classmate, his safety is more important.”

When the girl said this, Yu Qing’s gaze fell on her as he asked: “You’re… Ah Pei’s classmate?”

“Yes.” She smiled, revealing a cute dimple on her young, pretty face. “I’m Qi Wenqiang.”

“Miss Qi, I really must thank your whole family.” Yu Qing thanked them very solemnly and said he wanted to treat them all to dinner.

“Young Master—”

They had barely chatted for a few minutes when Uncle Zhuang arrived at the hospital with bags full of things. Freshly made soup from the chef and clean clothes for Yu Pei.

Yu Qing excused himself from Qi Wenqiang’s family and walked over to Uncle Zhuang, telling him to wait here for Yu Pei to come out while he had urgent business to attend to at the company.

Uncle Zhuang could see the grave expression on Yu Qing’s face and probably knew this accident wasn’t so simple. He nodded and said: “Young Master, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of the little young master.”

After saying goodbye to Qi Wenqiang’s family again, Yu Qing left.

Qi Wenqiang was standing by the window. With a slight turn of her head, she could see Yu Qing getting into the Bentley Mulsanne that Uncle Zhuang had brought and driving away. Her eyes flickered slightly.

Uncle Zhuang had already handed a check for 100,000 yuan to Qi Wenqiang’s father, saying it was Yu Qing’s gesture of gratitude for their lifesaving help.

Qi Wenqiang’s family was just an ordinary household, which meant 100,000 yuan was roughly half a year’s income for them. Suddenly having this much money handed to them left Father Qi somewhat stunned, and he quickly declined: “How can we accept this? We only helped by calling an ambulance, we didn’t really help with anything else.”

But Uncle Zhuang pushed the check back, saying this amount wasn’t much for them and was just a small token of Yu Qing’s appreciation, insisting they must accept it.

“Qiangqiang, your classmate’s family is so wealthy?” Father Qi held the check in amazement. Just for helping out, they had received so much money. He now firmly believed in the saying that good deeds are rewarded.

Qi Wenqiang remained silent. She had actually known that Yu Pei’s family should have some money, but she hadn’t expected them to be this wealthy. Her family had indeed planned to visit Sugar Maple Manor today, but they had encountered a car accident on the way, so she and her father had gone to help.

Before seeing who was in the car, Qi Wenqiang had thought the black Audi looked somewhat familiar. It wasn’t until Yu Qing carried Yu Pei out of the car that she suddenly remembered where she had seen it—after school every day.

High school students all loved freedom. Most of them preferred riding electric scooters or taking public transportation to school rather than having their parents drive them, because as they got older, they always had some little secrets they didn’t want their families to know about.

But Yu Pei was picked up and dropped off by a black Audi every day. Students had speculated that his family must be quite wealthy, but they couldn’t find solid evidence. Since an Audi wasn’t a particularly expensive car and Yu Pei never wore designer brands, everyone just guessed and left it at that.

It wasn’t until today’s accident that Qi Wenqiang discovered just how wealthy Yu Pei’s family actually was.

After accepting the check, Father Qi exchanged a few polite words with Uncle Zhuang. Seeing Qi Wenqiang standing there silently, he assumed she wanted to leave and said: “Qiangqiang, should we go now? We can still make it to Sugar Maple Manor.”

However, Qi Wenqiang said: “Dad, let’s not go this week. We can go next week instead. Yu Pei is my classmate, I’d like to stay here and check on him.”

Father Qi was kindhearted and felt his daughter made sense. Since they were classmates, it was good to stay and check on him after an accident. So he and Mother Qi decided to stay.

Uncle Zhuang didn’t think much of it and went with the doctor to handle the admission procedures. He was also worried that Qi Wenqiang’s family hadn’t had dinner, so he ordered takeout and bought lots of snacks for Qi Wenqiang.

Yu Pei was wheeled into the hospital room about an hour later. The blood on his face had been cleaned off, his forehead wound was bandaged, and you could still faintly see traces of dark yellow medicinal stains. His right arm was also secured with a splint to prevent him from moving it during sleep and dislocating it again.

Uncle Zhuang watched him lying pale in the hospital bed, his heart aching terribly. He felt that Yu Pei’s hard-earned healthy complexion would be gone again after this illness.

Qi Wenqiang watched Uncle Zhuang’s heartbroken expression as he used a cotton swab to moisten Yu Pei’s dry lips with water. She pressed her lips together and was about to approach him when the ward door was pushed open: “Where’s Ah Pei?!”

Gu Zheng burst into the room in a whirlwind but immediately lowered his voice when he saw Yu Pei lying in the hospital bed. He walked over to Uncle Zhuang and asked quietly: “Uncle Zhuang, how is Ah Pei?”

“The little young master is fine, he just hit his head and dislocated his arm, but it’s been reset already.” Uncle Zhuang said. “Master Gu, you don’t need to worry.”

“How did he suddenly get in a car accident?” Gu Zheng couldn’t help but worry. After receiving Uncle Zhuang’s call about Yu Pei’s accident, he had immediately left his new friends and rushed over. He had been anxious about how seriously Yu Pei was injured the whole way there, finally relaxing only when he saw Yu Pei’s condition wasn’t too bad.

“Hi, Gu Zheng.” Qi Wenqiang, who had been standing in the corner, smiled and greeted him after he had quieted down.

Gu Zheng looked up at the sound and only then noticed that there was someone else in the room. He looked at her with a strange expression, saying questioningly: “Qi Wenqiang?”

“This is the family who saved the young master.” Uncle Zhuang explained to him.

Gu Zheng glanced at Qi Wenqiang’s parents standing beside her and reluctantly greeted them. Since it was getting late and Yu Pei showed no signs of waking up anytime soon, Qi Wenqiang’s parents sat for a while before leaving with Qi Wenqiang.

As soon as they left, Gu Zheng immediately went to the bathroom to call Luo Changzhou.

When he turned on his phone, he discovered that Luo Changzhou had called him several times, but he had been too rushed on the way over to hear them. Gu Zheng called back, and before he could speak, Luo Changzhou asked urgently: “Gu Zheng, do you know where Ah Pei went? I called him several times but he didn’t answer.”

“I need to tell you something, but you have to stay calm first.” Gu Zheng softened his voice and said gently: “Ah Pei was in a car accident.”

As soon as Gu Zheng finished speaking, he heard a crash from Luo Changzhou’s end. It sounded like he had knocked something over. Gu Zheng quickly said: “Don’t panic first. Ah Pei is fine, I just came from his hospital room.”

“Which hospital is Ah Pei at?” Luo Changzhou said in a low voice. Gu Zheng could hear his hurried footsteps. “I’m coming to see him right now.”

“It’s so late, don’t come out.” Gu Zheng tried to dissuade him. “Your parents will scold you.”

Luo Changzhou said: “My parents know that Ah Pei and I are together.”

Gu Zheng stammered: “But… on Ah Pei’s side, his big brother and Uncle Zhuang probably don’t know.”

After Gu Zheng said this, he heard Luo Changzhou’s footsteps stop. There was only the sound of slightly heavy breathing on the phone. Then he said again: “It’s fine. Just tell me, I won’t go in. I’ll just sit by the door.”

“Coming to see him tomorrow would be the same. Ah Pei hasn’t woken up yet, and we don’t know when he will.” Gu Zheng tried to persuade him further.

But Luo Changzhou remained determined to come see Yu Pei.

Gu Zheng had no choice but to tell him which hospital they were at and Yu Pei’s room number.

When Luo Changzhou arrived at the hospital, it was already past 9 PM. It was completely dark and somewhat cold, but he hadn’t even brought a jacket. Following Gu Zheng’s directions to Yu Pei’s room, he sat down on the bench outside the ward and texted Gu Zheng: [I’m here.]

Gu Zheng was inside chatting with Uncle Zhuang when he saw Luo Changzhou’s message. He made an excuse about going to the bathroom and slipped out of the room. As soon as he stepped outside, he saw Luo Changzhou.

He looked back at the ward like a thief, afraid Uncle Zhuang might come out, and said to Luo Changzhou: “Let’s go talk by the elevator.”

Luo Changzhou nodded and walked with Gu Zheng to the elevator area.

“How did Ah Pei get in the car accident?” Before they had even stopped walking, Luo Changzhou asked urgently.

Gu Zheng said: “I don’t know all the details either. Uncle Zhuang said his big brother was driving when they hit a guardrail and then crashed into a tree. Ah Pei wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, so he hit his head.”

“He only hit his head?” Luo Changzhou asked.

“His arm was also dislocated, but it’s been reset already.” Gu Zheng said. “He’s really fine. It’s so late and you still rushed over. Coming to see him tomorrow would be the same.”

Luo Changzhou frowned and said: “I’m worried.”

Gu Zheng sighed: “But even though you‘be come, you can’t see him. Uncle Zhuang is still inside.”
