Chapter 46
Editor: Princess
That beam of light was like the bright headlights of an oncoming car, and also like the white light that had pierced through his skull during his splitting headaches. At this moment, Yu Qing seemed to stop breathing entirely, his whole being emptied out. He could only follow his instincts and jerk the steering wheel hard to the right, avoiding the sedan that was racing straight toward them.
Whether it was fortunate or unfortunate, this area near Sugar Maple Manor was in the southern suburbs, with open grassland stretching on both sides of the road, occasionally dotted with one or two lush maples reaching toward the sky.
The Audi that Yu Qing and his little brother were riding in was going too fast, because after crashing through the roadside guardrail, the vehicle charged straight into the open field, finally coming to a stop only when it slammed sideways into a maple tree.
The earth-shaking roar of the crash and the horrifying screech of tires grinding against pavement created quite a commotion on this sparsely populated road. Even the soda vendor who had already walked some distance away could faintly hear the sound.
When the car spun violently, Yu Pei’s body slammed hard to one side. This seemed to be a common affliction of all backseat passengers: thinking the back seat was safer than the passenger seat, they would unconsciously forget to buckle their seatbelts.
His head struck the window beside him, the impact nearly knocking him unconscious on the spot. He was tossed about with the swaying vehicle, and when the car finally settled, he remained dazed and unable to collect himself. A sharp ringing filled his ears, and his whole body felt light as a feather falling into an unfathomably deep canyon. Only when he hit bottom did waves of pain come crashing over him, wildly occupying his blank mind.
Yu Pei felt very nauseous and his forehead hurt terribly. Before he could reach up to touch it, he felt a warm liquid flowing from the throbbing spot on his forehead, pulsing out with each heartbeat and streaming into his eyes.
He coughed twice and tried to move his body, only to discover that his whole body ached and felt weak. His right arm was also twisted beneath him in a contorted position, the slightest movement sending waves of piercing pain through him.
“…Big brother?” Yu Pei gasped twice, his voice barely audible as a mosquito’s whisper.
Yu Qing sat motionless in the front seat, but Yu Pei could see through the dim light that the airbag had deployed in the front. Moreover, the part of the vehicle that had struck the tree was the rear, so the front should be fine.
Yu Pei relaxed slightly, parting his lips to take two deep breaths, hoping to ease his physical pain. However he discovered that his heartbeat was getting faster and faster, his breathing becoming increasingly rapid, and his cheeks and fingertips beginning to go numb. No matter how hard he tried to breathe, the air seemed to be rejected by his body, unable to enter his lungs at all. This feeling was very familiar to him. It had clung to him like a persistent disease since childhood. This was the feeling of an asthma attack.
But his inhaler was in his backpack, and his backpack was pinned behind him. He was currently lying in the gap between the front and back seats. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t possibly turn over and retrieve the inhaler from his backpack at this moment. He couldn’t even sit up to make his breathing easier.
“…Big brother… Big brother, cough cough—” Yu Pei opened his lips, trying to wake Yu Qing in the front seat, but before he could say much, he was interrupted by coughing. His breathing became sharp and wheezy, producing a crowing sound like a rooster.
That feeling that had once pushed him to the brink of despair, bringing him infinitely close to death, was returning. But unlike the resignation and relief he had felt before, this time he felt fear and unwillingness.
He had just returned to school, where the new teacher was very kind to him and his classmates could interact with him normally. Gu Zheng had even transferred from Hua City to keep him company. He had someone he liked, and that person liked him back. His big brother had even said they would eat dinner together at home tomorrow…
His life was just beginning…
Yu Pei opened his eyes wide, and even though everything was dark before him, he struggled to tell himself not to fall unconscious.
Unable to reach the inhaler behind him, he stretched out his still-mobile left arm, reaching around to the driver’s seat to poke at Yu Qing’s body. Yu Pei’s fingers were already stiff and spasming from the numbness brought on by oxygen deprivation—he couldn’t even clench them into a fist. His somewhat long fingernails left scratches on Yu Qing’s neck, although he didn’t notice.
Yu Qing had indeed been unconscious for a while. The front airbag had held him firmly against the driver’s seat, so he hadn’t suffered any serious injuries. He was awakened by a sharp pain at the back of his neck.
When he groggily emerged from his semi-conscious state, he heard Yu Pei’s violent gasping during his attack.
Yu Qing’s pupils suddenly constricted. After a moment’s stunned silence, he immediately reached for the door handle, but the more nervous and frightened he became, the more his hands shook, causing them to slip off the handle several times.
“Dad, the car is here!” Outside, there seemed to be several sets of footsteps, mixed with a girl’s shouts, gradually approaching them.
“Quick, go see if anyone’s hurt!”
The moment the door opened from outside, Yu Qing almost tumbled out from between the front seat and the airbag with great difficulty. Then ignoring the man’s hand that reached out to help him, he opened the back door with trembling hands and lifted Yu Pei out of the gap.
The girl who had followed the man saw who was in the back seat and cried out in surprise: “Yu Pei?!”
“Ah Pei? Ah Pei!”
However, Yu Qing had no time to pay attention to anything else.
With shaking hands, he wiped some of the blood from Yu Pei’s face and, breathing heavily, retrieved the asthma inhaler that Yu Pei always carried from his backpack. He pressed one dose into Yu Pei’s mouth, then supported Yu Pei’s upper body upright against himself. Hearing that Yu Pei’s wheezing hadn’t subsided, he waited a minute before spraying another dose into his mouth.
This was already the upper limit for inhaler use. Within 30 minutes, Yu Pei couldn’t inhale any more medication.
However, Yu Pei’s condition seemed to show no improvement. Only then did Yu Qing belatedly reach for his phone in his pocket, wanting to call for emergency help.
But due to nervousness and panic, he couldn’t even input his lock screen password correctly. A woman walked up to him, showing him her phone: “We’ve already called for an ambulance. It should arrive soon.”
After a pause, the woman added: “The car that almost hit you drove off. It was going too fast for us to see the license plate clearly, but we reported it to the police for you.”
The woman’s phone screen was still lit, showing call records indicating they had made both police and ambulance calls 10 minutes earlier.
Only then did Yu Qing recover from his panic and confusion. He looked up at the people who had come to help, saying hoarsely: “Thank you.”
Standing before him were one man and two women. One of the women was quite attractive, obviously still young and likely a student. They appeared to be a family out for a drive who had happened upon Yu Qing and Yu Pei’s accident and come to help.
Seeing Yu Pei still gasping urgently on the ground, the woman asked with some concern: “Is this your little brother? He doesn’t look too good. Should we drive you to the hospital first?”
Yu Qing looked down at Yu Pei. The effects of the two inhaler doses seemed to be taking hold, because while Yu Pei’s breathing was still rapid, it wasn’t as severe as before. He was currently unconscious, probably due to hitting his head. Remembering how limp Yu Pei’s right arm had been when he lifted him from the car, Yu Qing wasn’t sure if it was fractured or dislocated. Not daring to move Yu Pei’s body rashly, he thought for a moment and said: “Let’s wait for the ambulance here.”
If they drove to the hospital themselves and encountered traffic, it would be disastrous. The ambulance had proper emergency equipment, and besides, vehicles automatically made way for ambulances, so it would be better than them taking Yu Pei to the hospital themselves.
South City’s ambulance service was quite efficient. Moreover, this road didn’t have much traffic, so the nearest hospital immediately dispatched an ambulance. When the paramedics got out of the vehicle, they immediately fitted Yu Pei with an oxygen mask and placed him on a stretcher to push into the ambulance.
Yu Qing also rose from the ground, but as soon as he stood up, he swayed unsteadily. He had also hit his head, what’s more there was a huge gash on his right forehead that was bleeding. He had been so focused on worrying about Yu Pei that he hadn’t noticed his own condition. Now that he had relaxed, all the physical discomfort hit him at once. The paramedic steadied him and wanted to bring him into the ambulance too, but Yu Qing stopped the paramedic and asked the family who had helped them: “Sir, could you give me your contact information? When things settle down, I’d like to thank you properly—”
“No need, no need, we’ll go to the hospital with you.” The man waved his hand, helping the paramedic support Yu Qing into the ambulance while saying, “The police will need to take our statements anyway.”
Yu Qing couldn’t refuse and had to get into the ambulance, while the man and his family followed behind in their car.
Yu Qing sat on another bed in the ambulance, letting the paramedic treat his head wound while keeping his eyes fixed on Yu Pei, asking urgently: “Doctor, how is my little brother? He has asthma.”
“He’s already used his inhaler, right?” the paramedic asked.
Yu Qing nodded quickly.
“Then he should be fine. Now that he has the oxygen mask on, his breathing isn’t as labored. But we’re not sure about the head injury yet.” The paramedic said. “We’ll need to do a CT scan, but the wound doesn’t look serious. He’ll probably have a concussion and need to rest for a few days.”
“What about his arm?” Yu Qing hadn’t forgotten about Yu Pei’s right arm, which the paramedic had temporarily stabilized.
The paramedic glanced at it and said: “It’s dislocated. We’ll need to take an X-ray and pop it back into place. It’s no big deal, don’t worry. I see you have a cut on your head too. You should lie down properly instead of sitting up.”
Paramedics who responded to car accident calls had seen how horrific the people rescued from crash sites could be. Not to mention those who died on the spot, they had seen plenty missing limbs. Yu Qing and Yu Pei’s light injuries were already very fortunate.
Yu Qing was pressed down to lie flat by the paramedic. His head was indeed very dizzy, his forehead wound throbbed with pain, and his wildly beating heart still hadn’t settled back to normal. He couldn’t understand how, on the rare occasion he had come to pick up Yu Pei, they had suddenly gotten into an accident while driving perfectly normally. Fortunately, Yu Pei had brought his inhaler this time. Otherwise who knows what might have happened if he hadn’t.
