Chapter 38

Editor: Princess

After Gu Zheng returned to his room, he sat down on his bed without even taking off his school uniform. Yu Pei had dropped a huge bombshell on him tonight, and he still hadn’t recovered from the shock.

Since the Gu family moved away from South City several years ago, the entire family’s focus had shifted to Hua City. However, he had taken such a huge detour, transferring schools even though he was already in his senior year of high school, all because of Yu Pei.

Although he had many fair-weather friends, the only close friend he truly cared about and worried over was Yu Pei alone.

His family situation was similar to Yu Pei’s.

He had an older brother and sister above him, and the older siblings handled all family matters, so the younger ones didn’t need to worry about anything. It could be said that he had grown up pampered like a treasure in a honeypot. Yet Yu Pei, who came from a similar background, lived a completely different life.

He couldn’t understand why someone who should have been the most beloved youngest son in the family was treated like a wild child who had been picked up off the streets in the Yu household.

This wasn’t to say that Yu Qing treated Yu Pei badly, but Yu Qing was a full ten years older than Yu Pei.

He carried the burden of inheriting the Yu family business on his shoulders, so most of the time he wasn’t at home. His personality was naturally steady and reserved, so he couldn’t be as close and indulgent with his young brother as a sister might be.

Moreover, no one knew that Mother Yu, who appeared normal and well-mannered on the surface, was actually treating Yu Pei that way in private. Yu Pei was like a stubbornly silent gourd, never saying anything and keeping everything bottled up inside, until he finally developed that illness.

After he learned this news, he threw away his pride and pestered his parents day after day, insisting on transferring back to South City to accompany Yu Pei through high school no matter what.

He had only been here for two days, and while Yu Pei seemed much more optimistic than before, he had suddenly gained a boyfriend.

Now that he had calmed down, he could properly think through Yu Pei’s sudden change in sexual orientation.

More than half a year ago, before Yu Pei developed Cotard’s syndrome, he had told him that he liked a girl. Yu Pei had never shown any signs of liking men before. The only change in his sexual orientation coincided with the cause of his illness, the upheaval in the Yu family half a year ago.

Father Yu died, Mother Yu was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, Yu Qing took on the heavy burden of Yu Corporation, and Yu Pei was sent to a psychiatric rehabilitation facility.

The vast Yu family had completely changed overnight.

Mother Yu had also become someone who couldn’t be mentioned in the Yu household.

After thinking it over, Gu Zheng felt that compared to what Mother Yu had done half a year ago, Yu Pei having a boyfriend wasn’t really that shocking at all.

He even thought that Yu Pei’s sudden change from liking women to liking men might be related to her, but he didn’t dare bring up this speculation openly.

Besides, when he thought about it carefully, aside from not being able to give Yu Pei children, Luo Changzhou didn’t seem to have any other flaws.

Most importantly, Yu Pei liked him, and that was more important than anything else.

After thinking it through, he took a deep breath, jumped up from the bed, then immediately went to knock on Yu Pei’s door again. “Ah Pei, open the door again.”

“Ah Zheng?” Yu Pei thought Gu Zheng couldn’t accept this matter and was feeling somewhat dejected, sitting at his desk in a daze, when Gu Zheng suddenly came back.

Gu Zheng closed the door and pulled Yu Pei to sit on the small sofa, asking quite seriously, “Ah Pei, are you already together with Luo Changzhou?”

“Mm… he confessed to me at noon, and then we got together.” When mentioning Luo Changzhou, Yu Pei spoke with some shyness. “But I already liked him before. I wanted to tell you when you first arrived, but I didn’t have the chance to bring it up.”

Hearing this, Gu Zheng felt even better about breaking up with that girl. Such an important matter, and he had missed it because she wanted to video chat with him.

Gu Zheng frowned deeply. He didn’t ask Yu Pei why he used to like girls but now suddenly liked boys, nor did he ask if it was because of Yu’s mother. Instead, he asked, “Are you certain? Do you really want to be with him?”

“Yes.” Yu Pei nodded, answering with utmost seriousness.

He was almost eighteen, and although many people felt that boys this age were still in an easily excitable phase, still children who didn’t understand anything, Yu Pei clearly knew what he wanted.

In the past seventeen years, he had never felt that his life held anything worth anticipating. His long yet predictable life had no interest whatsoever. He lived like a walking corpse.

But Luo Changzhou was like the most brilliant ray of light in his life, able to illuminate a corner in the endless darkness.

Even if it still wasn’t enough to light up everything, he was the only light.

After his appearance, everything began to change.

He started to look forward to a future with Luo Changzhou, a life he had never dared to imagine or hope for before.

Gu Zheng looked into Yu Pei’s eyes, and seeing the seriousness in their depths, knew he was definitely not joking around. He really liked Luo Changzhou very much.

Gu Zheng’s heart sank even more because of Yu Pei’s seriousness.

He didn’t believe in love. Even though his parents were relatively good model spouses and his father didn’t engage in affairs, he himself just didn’t believe in love.

He had been in relationships many times but had never thought about spending his entire life with one person.

He believed that people were born lonely, and that there should be a distance between people that wasn’t too close. A distance where meeting again wouldn’t bring too much joy, and parting wouldn’t bring too much sorrow, because only loneliness could accompany a person to old age. Goodbyes were just a matter of coming sooner or later.

With Yu Pei being so serious about this, he worried about what would happen if he and Luo Changzhou broke up later.

How much of adolescent love could last a lifetime? Most ended without a trace, disappearing without any warning.

But he wouldn’t mention his worries in front of Yu Pei, because Yu Pei’s emotions were fragile.

His depression couldn’t be completely cured within half a year.

What’s more his current normal life was mainly dependent on chemical reactions from medication, and he could easily be affected by the emotions of those around him.

He didn’t dare gamble on whether Yu Pei would overthink things if he voiced his concerns.

Since childhood, Gu Zheng had wanted his mother to give him a younger brother or sister, but his mother later became too old and didn’t want more children. Yu Pei was a few months younger than him, so he had transferred his desire for a sibling onto Yu Pei. He regarded Yu Pei as importantly as his own younger brother.

So he put on a relaxed expression, acting very understanding as he said to Yu Pei, “Alright, alright, it’s good that you told me. This way I won’t accidentally become a third wheel and interfere with you two dating.”

Hearing Gu Zheng say this, Yu Pei lowered his eyes slightly, his earlobes turning a bit red, his fingers picking and scratching at the table edge. “How could that be…”

Gu Zheng had grown up with Yu Pei and could easily spot his little habits when lying. Seeing this made his heart ache even more.

Ah Pei and Luo Changzhou had definitely done something else behind his back!

But he had to feel grateful too, because they were all still students, so whatever they did, they couldn’t go as far as the bedroom for the time being.

“Does Big Brother Yu know about you and Luo Changzhou being together?” He had just been thinking about many things in his room, including how to help Yu Pei come out if he really wanted to stay with Luo Changzhou forever.

“Not yet.” Yu Pei shook his head. “I still don’t know… how to bring this up with my big brother.”

“Don’t tell him yet.” Gu Zheng thought for a while and said, “I’ll help keep your secret. Coming out is something we need to plan carefully.”

“Mm-hmm, then I’ll tell him after some time.” Yu Pei felt that telling Gu Zheng about this was indeed good – Gu Zheng would help him think of solutions.

However, Gu Zheng actually just wanted to privately learn more about what kind of person Luo Changzhou was.

If Luo Changzhou was a scumbag like him, he definitely wouldn’t let Ah Pei be with him.

“Alright, then I’m taking your homework.” Gu Zheng smiled cheerfully on the surface as he took Yu Pei’s homework and left. As soon as he stepped out the door, his expression fell.

After returning to his room, he began using his phone to search for various forums or confession walls about Nan Hua High School, wanting to learn more about Luo Changzhou. After all, Luo Changzhou had suddenly transferred here. Who knew if he had done anything bad at his previous school.

This time when Gu Zheng left, Yu Pei didn’t feel upset anymore. He smiled and began texting Luo Changzhou on his phone, telling him about the Gu Zheng situation: [Changzhou, I told Gu Zheng about us being together.]

However after sending it, Yu Pei suddenly felt that it might not be good. What if Luo Changzhou didn’t like him telling people about this?

But Luo Changzhou’s reply quickly dispelled his concerns: [Mm, if you told him, then you told him. You can tell whoever you want.]

Yu Pei certainly wouldn’t tell people about this randomly, but seeing Luo Changzhou say this, he couldn’t help asking: [Aren’t you afraid of others finding out?]

If people discovered their homosexual relationship, it would still attract criticism, right?

Luo Changzhou replied: [I’m not afraid of what others say about me, but if someone says something about you, I’ll definitely scold that person.]

Yu Pei couldn’t imagine Luo Changzhou scolding someone to defend him, but just thinking about it made him feel very sweet, because being protected by someone one liked was a very happy thing.

Yu Pei couldn’t help thinking that Luo Changzhou was a science student, so how could he be so smooth when saying romantic things?

He walked to the balcony and saw the Tagimoucia that Luo Changzhou had given him. He sat down and poked the red flower buds with his finger.

Moonlight poured down from the sky, falling on his fingertips. He looked up at the sky. Tonight’s moon was very full, like a silver gleaming moon disk.

After lying back in bed, he remembered the subtle confession goodnight text he had sent to Luo Changzhou before. At that time, the moon had been a crescent, but the moonlight was as beautiful as tonight.

Once he hadn’t dared to say “I like you”, so he had sent “The moonlight is beautiful tonight.” But now there was no need to say it anymore, because he and Luo Changzhou liked each other.

Taking his phone out, he sent that text to Luo Changzhou again: [The moonlight is beautiful tonight. Good night.]

The phone buzzed with a “beep”, and Luo Changzhou’s reply came quickly. The text read: [I love you too. Good night.]
