Editor: Princess
Gu Zheng didn’t know why, but he had only gone out for lunch with a girl he had just met at school, however when he came to class in the afternoon, the atmosphere between Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou had changed.
He couldn’t quite put his finger on what was strange about it, but it was definitely different from the atmosphere when they were together in the morning.
At that time, at least the three of them were still together, but now, it was as if Luo Changzhou and Yu Pei were covered by a large dome, and inside that dome, there were only the two of them, while he was abandoned outside.
So during the afternoon break, he asked Yu Pei, “Ah Pei, did you go home for lunch?”
“No, I went to eat lunch with Changzhou, then we came back to school.”
“Besides eating lunch, did you two… do anything else?” Gu Zheng hesitated for a moment but still couldn’t find appropriate words to express his confusion. “I just feel like there’s something a little strange between you two.”
“…Is there?” Yu Pei said somewhat guiltily in a small voice. After speaking, he secretly lifted his eyes to glance at Luo Changzhou, who was sitting beside him doing homework.
After he and Luo Changzhou finished lunch, they went directly to school. Most students were still at home taking naps at this time, so there was no one else in the classroom, only Luo Changzhou and him.
However, he was used to taking naps, so he felt a bit drowsy after sitting down. He had originally planned to lie on his desk to sleep for a while, but Luo Changzhou had asked him to use his lap as a pillow.
He still remembered lying in Luo Changzhou’s embrace at that time. Whenever he opened his eyes, he could see him looking down, seriously writing and reading.
“What are you smiling about?” Gu Zheng’s words interrupted Yu Pei’s thoughts.
Yu Pei was stunned and reached up to touch the corner of his mouth, “Was I smiling?”
“Yes.” Gu Zheng found it even stranger. He didn’t know how to hide his directness and said outright, “You just looked at Changzhou, then kept giggling there.”
As soon as Gu Zheng finished speaking, Luo Changzhou let out a soft laugh. His laughter was low, but it plucked at Yu Pei’s heartstrings. He didn’t turn around and kept his head down looking at the exercise book in front of him, as if that laugh was just Yu Pei’s imagination.
Yu Pei’s face turned bright red from their teasing. He opened his mouth but didn’t know what to say. He had no intention of hiding his relationship with Luo Changzhou from Gu Zheng, but there were more than just the three of them in the classroom now, so it wasn’t convenient for him to explain. In the end, he could only tell Gu Zheng, “I’ll tell you when we get home after school.”
“Ah, why can’t you tell me now?” Gu Zheng made a sound of confusion. He didn’t understand what secrets two boys, Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou, could have that couldn’t be discussed now. Weren’t they all boys? “I’m having dinner with a girl after school later, and we might go out afterward too. I’ll be back very late.”
Yu Pei was about to be driven crazy by Gu Zheng’s straight-male thinking. Just when he didn’t know how to explain, Luo Changzhou turned around and said to Gu Zheng, “We secretly finished today’s homework behind your back.”
“Really?” Gu Zheng looked shocked, because in his memory, his good friend Yu Pei was like him, someone who rarely did homework.
However, if this was really the case, then he could understand a bit better. Luo Changzhou was the top student in their class, and his homework had to be coveted by many people. However he didn’t allow others copy his homework and only allowed Yu Pei copy it, so this matter had to be kept secret.
Gu Zheng patted Yu Pei’s arm with a knowing expression, “Ah Pei, let me copy your homework tonight.”
“Mm…”
Gu Zheng suddenly felt that having Luo Changzhou, such a brilliant friend was really a good thing. At least they didn’t have to worry about homework anymore. He completely forgot that what he had found strange earlier was the changed atmosphere between Yu Pei and Luo Changzhou.
Yu Pei watched Gu Zheng turn around to talk to the girl in the seat behind him and quietly breathed a sigh of relief. However, he suddenly felt someone poke his arm. He turned to look and discovered that the person who poked him was Luo Changzhou.
“Do you still remember the homework assignment I gave you during PE class last time?” Luo Changzhou asked him with a smile.
Yu Pei thought for a moment and only vaguely remembered that it was a chemistry equation, but couldn’t quite recall the specific content. So he shook his head and said, “I don’t really remember.”
“It’s this one.” Luo Changzhou took his scratch paper, flipped to a fresh page, and rewrote that equation in the center of the white paper:
Mg + ZnSO4 =
When high school senior year first began, teachers would generally re-teach the courses they had covered before to their students. Yu Pei had been listening carefully in class during this period and taking notes seriously. Chemistry was no longer like before when he couldn’t even understand the problems. Looking at this equation, he thought for a while and wrote the answer next to the equals sign with his pen:
MgSO4 + Zn
Then he asked Luo Changzhou, “Is this correct?”
Luo Changzhou said, “Correct.”
Yu Pei hadn’t yet had time to be happy about getting the problem right when he heard Luo Changzhou ask him, “But do you know what this equation means?”
Could a chemistry equation have any other meaning?
Yu Pei shook his head and said, “I don’t know.”
“Then let me tell you.” Luo Changzhou smiled, then rote a sentence below the equation with his pen:
Mg + ZnSO4 = MgSO4 + Zn
Your magnesium stole my zinc.
During the break, the school’s broadcast system always played some gentle music or cheerful songs. Today, the broadcast happened to be playing a song about unrequited love. A gentle male voice sang about his feelings for that girl softly, tenderly stirring the timid emotions of students on campus.
Yu Pei looked at Luo Changzhou’s neat handwriting, and his ears quietly turned red again.
He didn’t remember where he had seen such a saying that unrequited love was the happiest kind of love in the world because there would never be the possibility of heartbreak.
He had once quite agreed with that saying, but now he felt that the happiest love in the world should be when the person one liked secretly also liked one back.
When Luo Changzhou saw him keeping his head down without speaking, he chuckled again softly. Then he lowered his left hand that had been resting on his book and, under the cover of their desks and school uniforms, took Yu Pei’s hand into his own palm, gently scratching with his fingers, as if silently speaking, telling Yu Pei that he liked him.
Many classmates passed by them, but no one discovered the tightly clasped hands here.
The feeling of intertwined fingers was particularly real, letting Yu Pei clearly know that all of this wasn’t sweetness he had imagined, but warmth that truly existed. The tickling sensation when being gently scratched seemed to fall from his palm and land on Yu Pei’s heart, making him unable to help but grip those broad fingers back, reluctant to let go even a little.
That evening when he returned home, Yu Pei sat at his desk with the table lamp on, looking at the hand that Luo Changzhou had held today, giggling foolishly. After laughing, he touched his own lips again.
First the upper lip, then the lower lip.
They were soft and warm there, easily pulling out memories from noon. The feeling of fingers wandering over his lips was somewhat ticklish, with some indescribable secret sensations similar to the feeling when another person kissed him.
Yu Pei couldn’t help himself and lay on the desk, smiling foolishly again.
When Gu Zheng knocked on the door and got no response, he pushed the door open and entered to see exactly this scene.
With a completely bewildered expression, he called out in a daze, “Ah….. Pei?”
Yu Pei, who had been lying on the desk smiling foolishly, froze.
A few seconds later, he quickly straightened up from the desk, turned around and tried hard to compose his expression to face Gu Zheng. However, his serious expression couldn’t hold for more than a few seconds before he started smiling again. He said to Gu Zheng happily, “Ah Zheng, I’m in love.”
“What?!” Gu Zheng’s voice changed with excitement, “You’re dating someone?!”
Yu Pei nodded, “Mm.”
“When? With whom?! Qi Wenqiang? No! I absolutely won’t allow you to be with her!” Gu Zheng’s eyes widened as he stared at Yu Pei in disbelief. “She’s not even that pretty, and didn’t you tell me this morning that you don’t like her anymore?”
Gu Zheng was very agitated and was almost ready to grab Yu Pei’s shoulders and shake him to make him sober up. Because in his memory, Yu Pei had only talked to him about matters concerning Qi Wenqiang, so when Yu Pei said he was in love, he naturally assumed it was with Qi Wenqiang.
But Yu Pei was also helpless. He didn’t know why Gu Zheng was so certain that he still liked Qi Wenqiang. He said, “It’s not Qi Wenqiang, it’s Changzhou.”
“As long as it’s not Qi Wenqiang, then it’s fine. She… wait.” Gu Zheng immediately felt relieved, but within seconds, he realized what Yu Pei had said. “Ah Pei, did you just say that the person you’re dating is Changzhou?”
“Mm-hmm!”
“The same Luo Changzhou who bought you chocolate bread this morning, sits next to you, and is really good at studying?”
Yu Pei’s eyes were bright, and he nodded repeatedly as if showing off his excellent boyfriend.
Gu Zheng gasped, grabbed his head with his hands, and paced back and forth in Yu Pei’s room. He completely hadn’t expected that his childhood friend, who had still liked girls not long ago, had somehow overnight started liking men and was even together with one!
No wonder he felt the atmosphere between the two of them was strange in the afternoon. Now he finally knew why!
Gu Zheng really wanted to be alone to quietly digest this bombshell news. However, Yu Pei grabbed him and said, “You also think Changzhou is really great, right?”
“No, no, no…”
Gu Zheng waved his hands repeatedly. Then seeing Yu Pei look at him with confusion, he quickly said, “I don’t mean he’s not good. He’s very good, very excellent, but, but…”
Gu Zheng opened his mouth but didn’t know what to say. In his eighteen years of straight male life, although he had heard about homosexuality, he had never been in contact with it, let alone having the person who liked men turn out to be his childhood friend.
“Ah Pei, let me go back to my room to think quietly. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” Gu Zheng wanted to escape and look up information about homosexuality to figure out why his childhood friend had suddenly started liking men. He and Yu Pei had grown up together, and except for the few years they were separated in middle school and high school, they had hardly ever been apart. How had he never noticed that Yu Pei liked men?
Yu Pei saw Gu Zheng’s shocked expression and thought he couldn’t accept this matter. He felt somewhat sad but didn’t want to force him, so he said, “Okay.”
Gu Zheng left in a daze.
