Chapter 197.1 Extra: If we met when we were young
Editor: Jodi
On a summer afternoon, the weather had finally cooled down a bit, and so wasn’t as stuffy and hot as before. Little Lin An Lan was lying quietly against the window, looking outside.
Xiao Qiao had just made her own bed. She turned back and seeing that his bed was still perfectly untouched, she asked, “Aren’t you going to take a nap?”
Lin An Lan shook his head. He wasn’t sleepy and didn’t feel like resting.
Xiao Qiao didn’t push him further. She just lay down on her own bed and soon fell asleep.
Lin An Lan rested his chin on the back of his hand, gazing out into the yard, watching as a new car pulled in. It was probably here to pick up some of the children—but definitely not him.
Big sister Xiao Qiao had once explained to him that, little by little, people would come by to see them, choose a child they liked, and then take them home.
At that time, he had asked her, “Can I be chosen too?”
“Of course!” Xiao Qiao had replied confidently, a wise air about her. “But it won’t happen so fast, so you’ll need to be patient and wait a bit.”
So, he waited patiently. But how long would he have to wait?
He didn’t know.
Suddenly, thoughts of his mother drifted into his mind, making him feel both sad and a little angry, so he stepped away from the window.
He didn’t like waiting.
Big sister Xiao Qiao had once told him not to wait anymore, but now she was telling him he had to wait.
Feeling down, he crawled back into his little bed and pulled up the blanket.
Xiao Qiao stirred, “You’re not going to stay by the window?”
“No.” Lin An Lan told her.
Waiting for someone was so miserable— he didn’t want to wait anymore. After all, nobody was coming to take him away anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Yu Hanshuang stepped out of the car, looking at the orphanage in front of her.
And with her, was Cheng Yu, her son who was almost six years old.
“Is this where I can get a little brother?” Cheng Yu asked with curiosity.
Yu Hanshuang nodded. “Of course.”
A week earlier, Cheng Yu had suddenly told her that he wanted a little brother.
At first, Yu Hanshuang hadn’t taken it seriously. But after her son kept bringing it up repeatedly, she couldn’t help but start considering it.
“Baby, why? Why do you suddenly want a little brother?”
“Little brothers are cute, and they can play with me.”
“But don’t you already have other little brothers?”
“Nope.” Cheng Yu had clung to her hand, shaking it as he insisted, “I want a little brother, my little brother—one who can live at home with us.”
Yu Hanshuang really didn’t know how she was supposed to make a little brother appear for him.
Sure, she could get pregnant again, but her health was already fragile, and having another child would be no easy task for her in her current condition.
But Cheng Yu kept pestering her about it, and finally, one night while watching the news, it hit her: even though she couldn’t have another child herself, she could adopt one. That way, she’d fulfill Cheng Yu’s wish and do a good deed at the same time, k*lling two birds with one stone.
However when she brought this idea to Cheng Feng and Cheng Xiao, they opposed it as she had expected.
“There’s no need. Don’t we already have Xiao Yu?”
“But it’s Xiao Yu who wants a little brother.” She had replied.
“Xiao Yu is just young. You shouldn’t cater to his every whim. Adopting a child isn’t something to be taken lightly. Can you commit to caring for this child for a lifetime?”
“Even if I can’t, growing up in our home is still better than growing up in an orphanage.” Yu Hanshuang had argued back. She’d been researching orphanages over the past few days. “There are so many children in those places, but only a handful of teachers. How could they possibly care for every child? At least, in our home, we could give him proper care.”
“There’s still no need.”
The three of them argued back and forth for a long time until finally, Yu Hanshuang told them bluntly, “Relax. The child I adopt won’t be on the Cheng family’s household registry and won’t inherit anything from the Cheng family. Everything in the Cheng family will still belong to Xiao Yu. As for the adopted child, he’ll be registered under my family.”
The moment she said this, Cheng Feng and Cheng Xiao finally stopped opposing her idea, which was as close to consent as she would get.
But now, standing in front of the orphanage, she hesitated. Was this really a good idea?
Although she believed that for the adopted child, living with them would definitely be a happier life than staying in an orphanage, would the child feel the same way?
Would he eventually compare himself to Xiao Yu and feel a sense of disappointment, hurt by the differences between them?
She felt a pang of regret.
However this wasn’t something that could be helped. The name Cheng Yu already marked him as exceptional—he was the child born of the marriage between the Cheng and Yu families, Cheng Feng’s only son, and naturally the future head of the Cheng family.
