Chapter 25.3

Editor: Jodi

A small stone bounced in through the window, landing on Ning Sheng’s desk.

“Do you want to kill me?” Ning Sheng shouted downstairs.

Xu Ling: “I thought the window was closed. Are you okay?”

Ning Sheng: “Something’s wrong.”

Xu Ling: “What’s wrong?”

“Your homework is wrong.” Ning Sheng said, “You knocked over my water cup.”

“Damn it.” Xu Ling sprinted upstairs, “Why didn’t you say so earlier?”

There was a new clothes rack on the balcony, so Xu Ling hung up his homework to dry.

“Buy a new one.” Ning Sheng told him, “It’ll be all wrinkled when you turn it in.”

Xu Ling: “It’s okay. What kind of homework has the teacher not seen before?”

“What did you call me just now for?” Ning Sheng asked, “Are you done being busy?”

“I have a treasure to show you.” Xu Ling rummaged through boxes.

Ning Sheng: “A bank card?”

Xu Ling found a basketball and led him downstairs.

A bug-catching net that was hanging on a tree temporarily served as a backboard.

“Here, shoot, two-pointer.” The ball returned to Xu Ling’s hand and he took a few steps back, “Here, shoot, three-pointer.”

“Give it a try.” Xu Ling bounced around, made some fancy shots, then finally threw the ball over.

Ning Sheng stared at him, “Are you showing off your height?”

Xu Ling: “Hitting me on the head is a minus point.”

“I like the feeling of big points being deducted.” Ning Sheng threw the ball at Xu Ling’s head.

“When did I say I wanted to play basketball?” Then he asked angrily.

Xu Ling was taken aback, “Then why were you chatting with Fang Huai?”

Ning Sheng: “? He’s called Fang Hua!”

Xu Ling: “Aren’t they all trees?”1The Huai Xu Ling used- 槐- means a ‘locust tree’ and the ‘Hua’ Ning Sheng used, which is the correct one-桦- means a ‘birch tree’

“Then why don’t you call yourself Xu Dashan!” Ning Sheng said, “Xu Dashan!”2 The ‘Ling’ -岭- in Xu Ling’s name means ‘peak of a mountain’, whiles the ‘Dashan’ -大山- in Xu Dashan means ‘big mountain’

Xu Ling: “…”

Xu Ling: “Because my grandfather was called that.”

“Is your family in partnership with the mountains?” Ning Sheng’s attention was diverted.

And seizing this opportunity, Xu Ling brought out a plate of sweet cakes and escaped.

Lu Peng who was passing by to deliver goods handed Xu Ling a small bag of ribs.

“Is your family making rib soup tonight?” Lu Peng’s mouth watered.

“I want to try.” Xu Ling told him, “They say it’s good for the bones.”

Lu Peng: “Are you feeling hot? Why are you still sweating?”

“I just poked a hornet’s nest.” Xu Ling said in response.

Lu Peng: “….”

In the evening under the trees, Ning Sheng, sitting on the swing hammock, swung his legs as he held a piece of sweet cake, eating it slowly and probably not understanding what they were talking about, turned his head and smiled at Xu Ling, with a bit of sugar frosting on his lips.

“Dog Xu.” Lu Peng nudged Xu Ling with his elbow.

“Are you listening to me?” Lu Peng asked.

“Whatever, it’s all good.” Xu Ling replied perfunctorily.

So, during dinner time, two more people appeared in Xu Ling’s kitchen.

Lu Peng and Li Haoyue tapped their bowls, waiting for soup.

Xu Ling: “…..”

“Don’t you have food at home?” Xu Ling asked them.

Lu Peng: “Wasn’t it your invitation? You said anyone could come, eat as much as they want.”

Li Haoyue: “Please serve me 475ml.”

Grabbing the pot, Xu Ling ran.

“What are you doing?!” Ning Sheng, who was walking towards him, was startled and asked as he chased after him.

Xu Ling: “Protecting the food.”
