Chapter 88.2

Bai Jing stepped down from the hover car, and watching the crowd with the excitement on their faces, he found himself smiling too.
He thought back to when he had first arrived here from the apocalypse. He had been just as worried as they were about finding food, even almost passing out from hunger.
If it wasn’t that he had been lucky enough to stumble upon gambling on rough stones, he wasn’t sure if he’d have survived in such a place.
It would’ve been tough, considering his genetic level was so low.
Gu Yuanzhao held the teenager’s hand, his deep eyes gazing at him. “Ah Jing, it’s all behind you now. They can have a better future.”
“En.” Bai Jing’s mind came back to the present. That’s right, their fate had already changed from this moment on.
And he himself had long since been reborn.
“Mom, this blanket is so soft.”
“And the clothes are so comfortable.”
“Wow, can we really drink all this nutrient fluid as much as we want?”
“It feels like a dream….”
When Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao walked up to the tents and overheard these words, they exchanged a smile.
The people in the slums looked at them with curiosity.
After all, these two men, with their handsome faces and impressive auras, were obviously of noble birth, so what were people like them doing in the slums? Because even now, despite the clean-up efforts, the place was still a bit grimy. What’s more the aristocrats and nobles usually wouldn’t even set foot here, as merely hearing the words “slum district” seemed to make them feel that their status had been tarnished.
However when several of the soldiers, who had been stationed nearby to maintain order saw the two, they immediately walked over, snapping into a crisp salute. “Major General, Major.”
Bai Jing froze for a moment. He hadn’t expected that his nominal military rank would carry so much weight.
It was natural, though, as his military achievements were solid and not just honorary. And as for his status as an Energy Master, that title had come straight from the Imperial Marshal himself, so it definitely also held weight.
Gu Yuanzhao motioned for the soldiers to stand down.
Apart from inspecting the conditions in the slums, the two of them had come specifically to check on the individuals they’d rescued from the Yuan family’s grip, which included Bai Jing’s good friend, An Ge.
Had their mental power fully stabilized?
Bai Jing felt that it should be fine, however he still wanted to see it with his own eyes to feel assured.
*
A thin, dark-skinned young man walked past them, however when he overheard the soldiers’ titles for Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao, he stopped abruptly, standing in place to sneak a curious look at them.
Although the people in the slums didn’t have access to light brains or Starnet, that didn’t mean they were out of touch.
Because many of them, in their struggle for survival, tried to find whatever low-level jobs they could manage, and with the buzz surrounding this equal rights movement, the lives of those in the slums had changed dramatically. So after much investigation, they had all learned who their benefactor was.
It was a genius called Bai Jing, someone who was also born in the slums!
This news was nothing short of a shock and a ray of hope for these people.
Because if such an astounding genius could come out of the slums, then it meant that they weren’t worthless, and that they too, might have a chance to rise!
Of course, they were also deeply grateful to the royal family, the Gu Conglomerate, and all the noble and aristocratic families who had donated.
The young man stole another couple of glances at Bai Jing, his tanned skin turning slightly red.
Refined, beautiful, young, and also standing beside the Empire’s Major General as his partner. What’s more he’d heard the soldiers calling that tall man ‘Major General’ just now.
Could this really be their benefactor?
The young man patted the dust off himself to look as presentable as possible, then gathered his courage and hurried over. Standing in front of Bai Jing, his face turned bright red, and his hands were so jittery he didn’t know what to do with them. “Uh, excuse me…..are…..are you Young Master Bai Jing?”
Bai Jing stopped. “That’s me. Do you need any help?”
Heavens, it really was him!
“N-no, no.”
The ears of the young man turned red as those beautiful teal colored eyes looked right at him, and his palms starting to sweat, his heart raced like crazy. “Th-thank you! And thank you, Young Master Gu!”
He gave them a deep bow, then dashed off quickly.
“Our benefactor is here! The benefactor and Young Master Gu are here—”
He ran, shouting as he went.
“Really?!”
“Where are they?!”
“Hurry, let’s go!”
Countless people came pouring out of the tents, like a river flowing toward Bai Jing.
And the soldiers, afraid that the crowd might make any sudden moves, went on guard immediately.
“Thank you, benefactor and Young Master Gu!”
“Thank you—”
“Thank you for saving the slums!”
…..
Everyone began to express their gratitude sincerely, their eyes brimming with tears as they knelt down toward Bai Jing and Gu Yuanzhao.
The scene was overwhelming—tens of thousands of people kneeling on the ground, their foreheads pressed deeply against the earth in humble reverence, stretching as far as the eye could see.
!!!
And facing the vast, dark sea of people, Bai Jing found himself at a loss for words for the first time.
He could feel the powerful wave of gratitude swelling in these people’s hearts—their yearning for a better life, a hope that was so much like…. the one he’d once held.
In their eyes, Bai Jing saw hope.
Indeed, things were really getting better.
